A community center introduced a bicycle-sharing project for students traveling to local sports facilities. At first, bikes were available on both Saturdays and Sundays. During the first month, about 120 students used the service, but two bicycles were damaged because they had not been checked regularly. The center decided to stop Sunday rentals temporarily and inspect every bicycle on Friday evenings. Some students complained about the change, explaining that Sunday was their only free day. In response, the center opened a survey and promised to review the schedule after six weeks. Students who want to borrow a bicycle still need a school ID, and they must return it by 6 p.m. The manager said that the survey was intended to measure students’ needs, not to guarantee that Sunday rentals would return.
問16:Why did the center temporarily stop Sunday rentals? A. Demand was too low. / B. Two bicycles had been damaged and inspections were insufficient. / C. Students wanted to buy bicycles. / D. The center closed permanently.

A city library tested longer opening hours for eight weeks to help residents who worked during the day. Attendance after 7 p.m. was higher than expected, particularly among university students. Local officials described this as evidence that the new schedule was meeting an unmet need. However, the evaluation team noticed that many evening visitors had previously used the library during the afternoon. As a result, the additional visitors counted each evening did not necessarily represent an increase in overall library use. The team also noted that the trial coincided with the final examination period at a nearby university. It recommended repeating the trial at another time of year, comparing weekly total visits rather than evening figures alone, and asking residents whether they had been unable to visit before the change. The city agreed to collect further evidence before deciding whether to make the extended hours permanent.
問21:What was the main purpose of the trial? A. To reduce the number of library books / B. To replace university libraries / C. To support people who could not easily visit during the day / D. To introduce a membership fee
問22:Why did evening attendance not prove an increase in total visits? A. Evening visitors were not counted. / B. The library had stopped admitting students. / C. Every resident visited twice. / D. Some visitors had simply moved their visits from the afternoon.
問23:What other factor might have affected the trial’s results? A. A nearby university’s examination period / B. A change in bus fares / C. The opening of a new museum / D. A public holiday at the start of summer
問24:Which measure did the team recommend comparing? A. The number of library computers / B. Weekly total visits / C. The size of the library building / D. The price of university textbooks
問25:What is the city’s position at the end of the passage? A. Extended hours will definitely be permanent. / B. The trial will be canceled immediately. / C. More evidence is needed before a permanent decision. / D. University students will be forbidden to visit.

A group of secondary schools introduced a program intended to reduce food waste. Instead of serving identical portions to everyone, students could request smaller meals and return for more if food remained. After one term, the schools reported a 20 percent reduction in discarded food. Administrators celebrated the result, suggesting that giving students more choice had been highly effective. Yet an independent review raised two questions. First, the number of students eating school meals had fallen slightly during the same period, which could account for some of the decline. Second, several kitchens had changed the way they weighed leftovers, making direct comparisons difficult. The reviewers recommended measuring waste per meal, applying the same weighing method throughout the next term, and collecting student feedback about meal quality. They did not argue that smaller portions were a poor idea. Rather, they cautioned against attributing the entire reported decline to a single change. The schools agreed to continue the program while improving their measurements.
問26:What did the program allow students to do? A. Skip all school meals without notice / B. Choose smaller portions and obtain more food if available / C. Bring only food from home / D. Decide the price of every meal
問27:What was one concern raised by the reviewers? A. Meal prices had increased sharply. / B. Students refused to provide feedback. / C. Fewer students were eating school meals during the term. / D. The kitchens served no vegetables.
問28:What made direct comparisons of waste difficult? A. A national ban on food scales / B. Changes in the school calendar / C. An increase in student age / D. Different methods of weighing leftovers
問29:Which additional measure was recommended? A. Waste per meal / B. The number of school buses / C. Annual textbook sales / D. The number of sports clubs
問30:What best describes the reviewers’ conclusion? A. Smaller portions should be stopped. / B. The entire decline could not yet be attributed to the new serving system. / C. The measured decline proved that the food improved. / D. School meals should be replaced with snacks.

To reduce temperatures during summer heat waves, several districts planted trees along heavily used streets. Early measurements showed that shaded sections of pavement were cooler than nearby unshaded sections. City officials proposed expanding the program, arguing that the findings demonstrated substantial benefits. An independent research team supported the idea in principle but questioned how the results had been interpreted. Some streets with new trees also had less vehicle traffic and taller surrounding buildings, either of which could influence measured temperatures. Moreover, measurements taken at ground level could not establish how much the trees affected indoor temperatures or residents’ health. The researchers recommended monitoring matched streets over several years, recording changes in traffic, and distinguishing the effects of shade from those of broader urban design. They also emphasized that watering and maintaining young trees would involve ongoing costs that could vary widely between districts. The city ultimately funded a second stage of the program but reserved judgment about the extent of the long-term benefits. The researchers’ position was not that tree planting had failed; rather, they wanted public claims to reflect the limits of the evidence.
問31:What was directly observed in the initial measurements? A. Residents’ health had improved significantly. / B. Air conditioning use had declined. / C. Shaded pavement was cooler than nearby unshaded pavement. / D. Indoor temperatures were lower in every building.
問32:Which factor could complicate attributing cooling to the new trees? A. The age of all residents was unknown. / B. The streets were all the same length. / C. The trees were planted in winter only. / D. Differences in traffic and surrounding building heights.
問33:What could ground-level measurements NOT establish? A. How much the planting improved indoor temperatures and health / B. Whether the streets had any shade / C. Which districts planted trees / D. Whether pavement temperatures differed
問34:What type of further study did the researchers propose? A. Comparing only photographs of individual trees / B. Monitoring comparable streets over several years / C. Counting residents who liked green spaces / D. Measuring only the cost of tree seedlings
問35:Which statement best represents the researchers’ position? A. All tree planting should cease. / B. The measured cooling was entirely fabricated. / C. The initiative could be useful, but claims should match the evidence. / D. Maintenance costs were irrelevant to any decision.

A national research council proposed reserving a portion of its grants for independent attempts to reproduce influential scientific findings. Advocates argued that rewarding replication could discourage exaggerated claims and reveal results that depended on unusually specific conditions. Critics, however, warned that a poorly designed scheme might encourage researchers to select easy targets or treat isolated failures to reproduce a result as definitive evidence of misconduct. The council therefore rejected the idea that replication outcomes should automatically determine the original researchers’ credibility. Instead, it suggested evaluating whether the methods, samples, and analytical decisions of the follow-up study were sufficiently comparable to those of the initial work. Some disciplines, especially those involving rare events or expensive long-term observations, would require modified standards. The proposal also raised an allocation dilemma: money spent checking earlier findings would no longer be available for exploratory projects whose outcomes were inherently uncertain. The council’s preliminary recommendation was to establish a limited pilot, publish its evaluation criteria in advance, and assess whether replication grants improved the reliability of later research before committing substantial funds. The proposal’s significance lay less in guaranteeing that every published claim could be repeated than in making the conditions under which a claim held true more transparent.
問36:What potential benefit of replication funding did advocates emphasize? A. Making all scientific findings identical / B. Eliminating uncertainty from exploratory studies / C. Replacing every original research project / D. Discouraging overstated claims and identifying conditional results
問37:What concern did critics raise about a poorly designed scheme? A. Researchers might choose easy replications or overinterpret isolated failures. / B. No researcher would be permitted to use statistics. / C. Original studies would automatically become more expensive. / D. Replication would always involve rare events.
問38:How did the council propose interpreting replication results? A. By treating every failure as evidence of misconduct. / B. By considering how comparable the methods, samples, and analyses were. / C. By trusting only studies with identical conclusions. / D. By excluding expensive observational sciences altogether.
問39:What is the ‘allocation dilemma’ mentioned in the passage? A. Whether the same journals should print both studies / B. Whether rare events should be considered scientific / C. Funding replication reduces resources for uncertain exploratory research. / D. How frequently universities should report grant totals.
問40:Which statement most accurately captures the final recommendation? A. Replication should be mandated for every published paper. / B. The council should withdraw from funding entirely. / C. Only studies with guaranteed outcomes deserve support. / D. A limited pilot with prepublished criteria should precede major commitments.

問40:D A limited pilot with prepublished criteria should precede major commitments.。

Q.Reading
