3.because、although、however、instead、while、soなどの前後で、因果・対比・転換を確認します。

SomeをAll、mayをmustへ変える選択肢は要注意です。

[P1] One Monday, Ms. Kato found more than forty half-used notebooks in the school’s lost-and-found room. She asked several students why they had bought new ones. Many said that they wanted clean covers at the beginning of a new term, although most of the old pages were still blank.

[P2] Three students suggested making small booklets from the unused pages. Before collecting anything, they asked classmates to remove pages containing names or personal notes. Then they put twenty clean sheets into each booklet. The group called the project the Second Page Corner.

[P3] During the first week, only twelve students visited the corner. It was behind a tall shelf, so many people did not notice it. The group moved the table near the entrance and put up clear signs. In the following week, forty-five students visited. The group also explained that dirty or damaged pages should be recycled instead of being reused.

[P4] At the end of the month, the students had collected 1,200 clean sheets and turned them into sixty booklets. Their teacher said the most important lesson was not the number of booklets. It was learning to notice a problem, test a solution, and improve it when the first plan did not work.

  • Q01. Why did many students buy new notebooks at the beginning of a term?
  • Q02. What did Ms. Kato find in the lost-and-found room?
  • Q03. What did the group ask students to remove before collecting paper?
  • Q04. Why did only twelve students visit during the first week?
  • Q05. Name two changes the group made after the first week.
  • Q06. What did the group explain should be done with dirty or damaged pages?
  • Q07. How many clean sheets went into one booklet? Show which two numbers support your answer.
  • Q08. Which is the best overall message: A. New notebooks are always unnecessary / B. A plan can become better after testing and revision / C. Recycling is easier than studying?

[P1] Students at Green Hill School noticed that two routes led from the station to their campus. Route A was shorter, but it had almost no shade in the afternoon. Route B took about five minutes longer and passed a small park with several large trees. The students wondered which route people preferred in summer.

[P2] They interviewed eighty residents, and fifty returned the questionnaire. Among those fifty, thirty-eight said they preferred Route B on very hot days, while twelve chose Route A because saving time mattered more to them. The students wrote down the numbers carefully and did not claim that all eighty residents had answered.

[P3] Some students wanted to ask the city to plant trees immediately along Route A. Others pointed out that young trees would need years to provide enough shade. Instead, the team proposed a temporary cover near the bus stop and suggested adding drinking-water information to the station map.

[P4] The school published the results with one important warning: the answers came from only fifty people. The survey showed what those respondents preferred; it did not prove what every resident would choose. The group planned to repeat the survey at a different time of year.

  • Q09. What is the main difference between Route A and Route B?
  • Q10. How many residents were interviewed, and how many returned a questionnaire?
  • Q11. Among the respondents, how many preferred Route B on very hot days?
  • Q12. Why did some people still prefer Route A?
  • Q13. Why might planting young trees fail to solve the immediate problem?
  • Q14. What short-term solution did the team propose near the bus stop?
  • Q15. Does the survey prove what every resident prefers? Explain using a sentence from the text.
  • Q16. Which title is more accurate: A. Everyone Prefers a Longer Walk / B. Comparing Routes and Understanding Survey Limits / C. Trees Never Help in Summer?

[P1] Twenty students joined a new English speaking club. At first, the club asked every member to record a two-minute opinion about a news story each Friday. Although the idea sounded useful, only seven students sent a recording in the first week.

[P2] A short questionnaire revealed two problems. Some students did not have enough time to prepare two minutes of speech, and others worried that classmates would laugh at their mistakes. The club leaders realized that collecting recordings was not the same as making it easy for students to practice.

[P3] They changed the activity. Students could now record only forty seconds, begin with the words ‘I think … because …’, and send their first recording privately to a teacher. Members who wanted a greater challenge could still record two minutes and include an example or a counterargument.

[P4] Fifteen students submitted a recording the following week. The leaders were pleased, but they did not call the new system a complete success. More submissions did not automatically mean better speaking skills, so the club planned to compare each student’s clarity and use of reasons over several weeks.

  • Q17. How long was the original required recording?
  • Q18. How many of the twenty members submitted a recording in the first week?
  • Q19. Identify the two problems revealed by the questionnaire.
  • Q20. What three changes made the activity easier to start?
  • Q21. Who could still choose to record for two minutes?
  • Q22. How many students submitted a recording the following week?
  • Q23. Why did the leaders avoid calling the new system a complete success?
  • Q24. Choose the best summary: A. Reducing barriers increased participation, but learning gains still needed checking / B. Every club member improved immediately / C. All students prefer public speaking.

[P1] A local museum invited students to help rewrite short English signs for international visitors. The old signs had been written by experts. They were accurate, but many included technical words without explanations. Visitors often stopped reading before reaching the most important information.

[P2] At first, the students tried removing every difficult word. A curator disagreed: some technical terms were necessary for accuracy. Together, they created two levels of information. Each display began with a short, simple message, followed by a longer paragraph for anyone who wanted more detail.

[P3] During a review, one draft sign said, ‘This river was always safe.’ The students found records of serious floods in the past, so they changed the sentence to ‘People have used this river for centuries, although floods sometimes caused great damage.’ The revision was longer, but it avoided a misleading claim.

[P4] After the new signs were installed, visitors asked more questions about the history of the town. The museum did not assume that the signs alone had caused the change, because a new exhibition had opened the same week. The students learned that clear writing should be simple enough to understand and precise enough to trust.

  • Q25. Why did visitors often stop reading the old signs?
  • Q26. Why did the curator object to removing every technical word?
  • Q27. What two levels of information did the new signs provide?
  • Q28. Which word made the draft statement about the river especially misleading?
  • Q29. What evidence caused the students to revise the sign?
  • Q30. What happened after the new signs were installed?
  • Q31. Why could the museum not say the new signs alone caused that change?
  • Q32. What two qualities of good writing does the final sentence emphasize?

根拠は第1段落の「wanted clean covers at the beginning of a new term」。
根拠は第1段落の「more than forty half-used notebooks」。
根拠は第2段落の「remove pages containing names or personal notes」。
第3段落の「behind a tall shelf」を受けて「did not notice it」とある。
第3段落の「moved the table near the entrance」「put up clear signs」が該当。
第3段落の「explained that dirty or damaged pages should be recycled instead of being reused」が根拠。
第2段落の「twenty clean sheets into each booklet」に直接ある。

第2段落の「Among those fifty, thirty-eight」が根拠。
第3段落の「would need years」が要点。
第3段落の「a temporary cover near the bus stop」に対応する。
第4段落の「did not prove what every resident would choose」。
AのEveryone、CのNeverは本文と矛盾する。

第1段落の「only seven students sent a recording」。
第2段落の「not have enough time」「worried that classmates would laugh」が二つの根拠。
第3段落の「Members who wanted a greater challenge」。
第4段落の「did not automatically mean better speaking skills」。

第2段落の「necessary for accuracy」。
  • Q28:always。
第3段落の「records of serious floods」。
最後の「simple enough to understand」「precise enough to trust」を一組で捉える。

  • 語句の誤読:not、only、although、all、some、should、couldなど意味を反転・限定する語に印を付けます。

Although the idea sounded useful, only seven …
例:recycled instead of being reused。
  • more than / only / among=「〜より多い」・「〜だけ」・「〜の中で」。
