Problem–Solution Essay

Feasibility(実行条件)安全・費用・個人情報・アクセス格差などを検討

Lost-and-found items

Original source (fictional): After a fictional school festival, staff logged 120 lost items. By the end of the following week, 60 had been claimed and 60 remained unclaimed. Staff had not recorded why owners failed to collect items, and the records did not identify how many students or visitors had lost something. The school had used a paper list at the entrance and a notice on a classroom board. A committee proposed a searchable catalogue that would show item descriptions without displaying owners’ personal information. Staff would still check proof of ownership before returning valuables.

問1: Identify the number of items still unclaimed at the end of the week.

問2: Calculate the share of logged items that remained unclaimed.

問3: Explain why the school cannot state the main reason items were unclaimed.

問4: State one possible limitation of the existing notification process.

問5: Propose a practical first improvement.

問6: Explain one privacy safeguard for the new list.

問7: Describe how staff could confirm that a claimant is the owner.

問8: Suggest a measure for judging whether the change helps.

問9: Write a cautious conclusion about introducing the catalogue.

問10: Write a problem–solution paragraph of about 90–130 words.

Food waste

Original source (fictional): A fictional school cafeteria weighed 25 kilograms of food waste over five operating days. The weighing included food left on plates and waste produced during preparation, but the cafeteria did not record those two sources separately. The staff also did not measure how much food was served, so the percentage wasted was unknown. A student committee suggested offering optional smaller portions and recording waste by source for the next two weeks. Kitchen staff warned that changes must continue to meet food safety and nutrition requirements.

問11: Identify the total food waste measured over five days.

問12: Calculate the average recorded waste per operating day.

問13: Explain why the waste percentage cannot be calculated.

問14: Distinguish the two sources of waste included in the measurement.

問15: Propose a way to learn which source contributes more.

問16: Suggest a possible intervention that does not force students to eat less.

問17: Identify a safety-related condition for the proposal.

問18: Propose a measure for evaluating the intervention.

問19: State a conclusion that avoids claiming a proven reduction.

問20: Write a problem–solution paragraph of about 90–130 words.

Late assignments

Original source (fictional): During four weeks, a fictional class of 40 students recorded 26 late homework submissions. Twelve different students submitted at least one assignment late. Some students submitted more than one late task, but the teacher did not record whether delayed submissions were caused by unclear instructions, scheduling conflicts, illness or other factors. The class currently receives deadline notices in several places: a learning platform and paper handouts. A proposal suggested one regularly updated deadline page, with a printed alternative and a clear route for students who need assistance.

問21: Identify the number of different students who submitted late work.

問22: Calculate the share of students who were late at least once.

問23: Explain why the main cause of late work is unknown.

問24: State one possible problem with giving deadlines in several places.

問25: Propose a change to the deadline information.

問26: Suggest an alternative for students without regular online access.

問27: Explain how the teacher could help a student facing a genuine difficulty.

問28: Choose a measurable outcome to compare after a trial.

問29: Write a conditional conclusion without blaming students.

問30: Write a problem–solution paragraph of about 90–130 words.

Laboratory room scheduling

Original source (fictional): A fictional school logged eight cases in one month when two groups requested the same laboratory room for overlapping times. Two rooms were available, but teachers and students checked separate paper calendars. The records did not show whether every conflict delayed a lesson, and the school had not measured how much time staff spent resolving them. The science department considered using a shared schedule that would show reservations and the equipment needed. Because some equipment requires adult supervision, teachers would need to confirm safety rules before approving bookings.

問31: Identify the number of overlapping booking requests recorded.

問32: State the number of laboratory rooms available.

問33: Explain why we cannot say that eight lessons were delayed.

問34: Identify one possible weakness of the previous booking process.

問35: Propose a practical change to the booking process.

問36: Explain why equipment information should appear on the schedule.

問37: Specify a safety condition for approving a reservation.

問38: Propose a metric for evaluating the new schedule.

問39: State a careful recommendation.

問40: Write a problem–solution paragraph of about 90–130 words.

1:Sixty items remained unclaimed.

2:Fifty percent of logged items remained unclaimed.

3:It did not collect data about why owners failed to collect their items.

4:A paper list at the entrance might be difficult for some owners to check.

5:The school could create a searchable list of unclaimed items.

6:It should avoid publishing personal information about possible owners.

7:Staff could ask for reasonable proof of ownership before returning valuables.

8:The school could compare the share of items claimed within a week before and after the change.

9:A limited trial may be worthwhile if privacy and ownership checks can be maintained.

10:At a school festival, 120 lost items were logged, but only 60 had been claimed by the end of the next week. This is a practical problem for both owners and staff. The school has not established why so many items remained unclaimed, so it should avoid blaming students. One possible step is to test a searchable lost-and-found catalogue that lists item descriptions without personal details. Staff would still check proof of ownership before returning valuables. The school could then compare how quickly items are claimed under the old and new systems. If the catalogue helps without creating privacy risks or excessive staff work, the school could consider keeping it.

11:The cafeteria recorded 25 kilograms of food waste.

12:The average was five kilograms per operating day.

13:The total amount of food served was not measured.

14:The total included preparation waste and food left on plates.

15:The cafeteria could weigh preparation waste and plate leftovers separately.

16:It could offer smaller portions as an option, while keeping other suitable portions available.

17:The cafeteria must continue to meet food safety and nutrition requirements.

18:Staff could compare daily waste by source before and after a limited trial.

19:Optional portions and better measurement could be tested before adopting a permanent policy.

20:A school cafeteria recorded 25 kilograms of food waste over five operating days, an average of five kilograms per day. However, the staff did not separate preparation waste from food left on plates, so they could not identify the main source. The percentage wasted was also unknown because the total amount served was not recorded. A practical first step would be to measure the two types of waste separately for two weeks. The cafeteria could also offer optional smaller portions, provided that nutrition and food safety standards are maintained. Staff should compare the recorded waste before and after the trial, rather than assuming that smaller portions will automatically solve the problem.

21:Twelve students submitted at least one assignment late.

22:Thirty percent of students were late at least once.

23:The teacher did not record the reasons for late submissions.

24:Students may find it difficult to check all deadlines consistently.

25:The class could maintain one regularly updated deadline page.

26:Teachers could also provide a printed deadline list.

27:The teacher could provide a clear way to request assistance or discuss the deadline.

28:The class could compare late submissions and the number of affected students across similar periods.

29:The school could test a shared deadline system while continuing to support students with different circumstances.

30:In one class of 40 students, there were 26 late homework submissions during four weeks, involving 12 different students. This does not mean that 26 students submitted late work. The teacher has not identified the causes, so it would be unfair to assume that students simply ignored instructions. One possible improvement is a single deadline page that is updated consistently. A printed version and a way to request help should remain available for students with different needs. The class could test the system for several weeks and compare both the number of late submissions and the number of affected students. A longer-term decision should follow the evidence.

31:Eight overlapping booking conflicts were recorded in one month.

32:Two laboratory rooms were available.

33:The records do not show whether every booking conflict delayed a lesson.

34:Separate paper calendars may make it difficult to see all reservations together.

35:The school could test a shared calendar showing room and equipment reservations.

36:Different activities may require equipment that is not available in every room.

37:A teacher should confirm supervision requirements before equipment is used.

38:The department could compare monthly booking conflicts before and after the trial.

39:A shared schedule may be worth testing if teacher approval and safety checks remain in place.

40:A school recorded eight overlapping requests for laboratory rooms in one month. Teachers and students used separate paper calendars, which may have made coordination difficult, although the exact cause of every conflict is unknown. The science department could test a shared schedule that displays room reservations and required equipment. This might help groups notice overlaps before preparing an activity. However, a booking should not automatically authorize the use of equipment that requires adult supervision. Teachers would need to confirm safety requirements. The department could then compare the number of booking conflicts before and after the trial and record staff workload. A permanent system should be adopted only if it is practical and safe.
