Cause–Effect Essay
|---|---|---|
| Observed result | The recorded total rose from 24 to 30.
| Possible cause | The longer opening hours may have contributed.
| Alternative explanation | However, an examination was approaching. |
| Conclusive limit | The data cannot establish the independent effect. |
英作文ではbecause、therefore、as a result、due toなどを使えますが、これらは文の意味関係に影響します。 関係が確認できないときは「may have contributed」「was associated with」などの慎重な表現を検討します。
Original fictional research brief: A fictional school library began opening thirty minutes earlier. Before the change, staff recorded an average of 24 morning entry events per school day over five days. During the following five-day period, they recorded an average of 30. The later period also included a week of examinations. The figures were counted entries, not numbers of different students. No comparable control group or measures of individual reasons for visiting were available.
問1:State the observed result without explaining its cause.
問2:Calculate the numerical increase per school day.
問3:Calculate the relative percentage increase.
問4:Identify the action that could be one cause.
問5:Identify another plausible cause mentioned in the facts.
問6:Why should ‘caused all six extra entries’ be avoided?
問7:Do the entry counts establish how many different students used the library?
問8:Write one careful cause-related sentence with ‘may’.
問9:Write a balanced thesis for a cause–effect paragraph.
問10:Write an 80–110-word Cause–Effect paragraph.
Original fictional research brief: A fictional school posted reminder signs asking staff to turn off unnecessary lights in empty rooms. Recorded electricity use was 420 kilowatt-hours in one week and 390 kilowatt-hours in the next. The two weeks had different outdoor temperatures and classroom schedules. The school did not measure the amount of electricity attributable to the lights alone, and it recorded no information about the amount of money saved.
問11:State the measured change in electricity use.
問12:Calculate the absolute reduction.
問13:Calculate the percentage reduction to one decimal place.
問14:State the proposed action that may be related to the result.
問15:Name two conditions that also differed.
問16:May the writer say that lights alone used 30 kilowatt-hours less?
問17:Can the report state a particular amount of money saved?
問18:Write one cautious causal possibility.
問19:Suggest a stronger comparison method.
問20:Write a Cause–Effect paragraph of roughly 90 words.
Original fictional research brief: A fictional school moved one bus stop closer to its main gate. Twelve written complaints about the stop had been recorded in the month before the move, and nine in the following month. During the same period, a different timetable was introduced and the total number of bus users was not recorded. The school did not count travel minutes or survey people who did not complain. The figures are complaint submissions, not numbers of dissatisfied students.
問21:State the observable outcome.
問22:Calculate the number of fewer complaints.
問23:Calculate the relative reduction.
問24:What change was intended to improve access?
問25:What other change happened at the same time?
問26:Do the complaint counts show how many bus users existed?
問27:Can twelve complaints be described as twelve dissatisfied students?
問28:Were door-to-door journey times measured?
問29:Write a balanced causal interpretation.
問30:Write a complete Cause–Effect paragraph.
Original fictional research brief: At a fictional school, ten volunteers tried to locate a room using an old sign and another ten volunteers tried a revised sign. Seven volunteers in the first trial and nine in the second reached the room without asking for help. The two groups differed, and the organisers did not randomly assign participants or check whether the rooms or routes were equally familiar. No completion times were recorded. The team wants to discuss a possible improvement without overstating what the trial established.
問31:State the first trial’s successful-navigation count.
問32:State the second trial’s successful-navigation count.
問33:Calculate the first trial’s success rate.
問34:Calculate the second trial’s success rate.
問35:Calculate the difference in percentage points.
問36:Can the writer conclude that the revised sign alone caused the higher rate?
問37:Does the passage establish that the revised sign made navigation faster?
問38:Were the participants randomly allocated to the two trials?
問39:Suggest one useful next experiment.
問40:Write a cautious Cause–Effect paragraph.
1:Recorded morning entries rose from an average of 24 to 30 per school day.
2:The average rose by six entry events per day.
3:The recorded average was 25 percent higher.
4:The school opened the library thirty minutes earlier.
5:The approaching examinations may also have affected attendance.
6:There was no comparable control group, and examination schedules also changed.
7:No. They are entry events, not unique visitor counts.
8:Earlier opening may have contributed to the increase in recorded entries.
9:Although average morning entries increased after earlier opening began, examination timing prevents a confident causal conclusion.
10:A fictional school extended its library’s morning opening time by thirty minutes. During five school days before the change, staff recorded an average of twenty-four morning entries per day. The next five days averaged thirty, an increase of six entries or 25 percent. Earlier access may have helped explain this pattern. However, the later period also coincided with examinations, which could have increased demand independently. Moreover, the counter measured entries rather than individual visitors. Without comparable control observations or information about why students visited, the school cannot establish that the timetable change alone caused the recorded increase.
11:Recorded electricity use fell from 420 to 390 kilowatt-hours.
12:The recorded reduction was 30 kilowatt-hours.
13:The reduction was approximately 7.1 percent relative to the first week.
14:The school posted reminders to switch off unused lights.
15:Outdoor temperatures and classroom schedules changed.
16:No. Electricity use by the lights alone was not measured.
17:No. Monetary savings were not recorded.
18:The reminders might have contributed to lower recorded electricity use.
19:Compare similar weeks while recording weather, classroom use and the relevant lighting demand.
20:A school posted reminders asking people to switch off unnecessary lights in empty rooms. Its recorded electricity use declined from 420 kilowatt-hours in one week to 390 in the next, a decrease of 30 kilowatt-hours or about 7.1 percent. The reminders could have contributed to the change, but outdoor temperatures and classroom schedules also differed between the weeks. The school did not measure lighting consumption separately or calculate financial savings. As a result, the available figures describe a reduction in building electricity use, not proof that the messages alone produced it.
21:Recorded complaints fell from twelve to nine.
22:There were three fewer recorded complaints.
23:The recorded count declined by 25 percent.
24:The bus stop was moved closer to the main gate.
25:A different timetable was introduced.
26:No. The total number of bus users was not recorded.
27:No. The records count submissions, not different people.
28:No. Travel minutes were not measured.
29:Moving the stop may have affected complaint counts, but the timetable change and unknown ridership prevent an isolated causal conclusion.
30:A fictional school moved a bus stop closer to its main gate. Written complaints fell from twelve in the previous month to nine in the next, a reduction of three complaints or 25 percent. The change in location may have helped, but a different timetable was introduced at the same time. The school also did not record total ridership or travel times, so the complaint counts cannot show how many people were dissatisfied or whether journeys became shorter. Further comparisons would be needed before attributing the reduction in complaints to the stop’s new position.
31:Seven of ten volunteers located the room without help.
32:Nine of ten volunteers succeeded with the revised sign.
33:The recorded rate was 70 percent.
34:The recorded rate was 90 percent.
35:The observed rate was 20 percentage points higher in the second trial.
36:No. Different groups participated and their familiarity was not checked.
37:No. Completion times were not recorded.
38:No. Random assignment was not used.
39:Use comparable tasks with randomly assigned volunteers and record both success and completion time.
40:Two small trials examined old and revised school signs. Seven of ten volunteers located the room without help using the old sign, compared with nine of ten using the revised version. The observed success rates were 70 and 90 percent, a difference of 20 percentage points. The newer sign may have helped visitors, but the participants were different and were not randomly assigned. Their familiarity with the routes was also unknown, and navigation time was not measured. The results suggest that further testing is worthwhile, not that the revised sign alone caused a universal improvement.
