Original evidence sheet: In a fictional classroom trial, twenty seeds were placed in a bright location and twenty in a shaded location. After one week, fifteen seeds germinated in the bright location and twelve in the shaded location. The seed batches were not randomly assigned, and watering was not recorded carefully. These are counts of germinated seeds, not heights of plants. The exercise asks students to describe the recorded difference without claiming that light alone caused it.
問1:Write a one-sentence Claim supported by the observations.
問2:State the direct Evidence as seed counts.
問3:Calculate the bright group’s germination percentage.
問4:Calculate the shaded group’s germination percentage.
問5:Calculate the difference in percentage points.
問6:Write a Reasoning sentence linking the data to the limited Claim.
問7:Give one reason why a causal Claim would be too strong.
問8:Correct the claim ‘Light always increases germination’.
問9:Write a follow-up test that would strengthen the explanation.
問10:Write a complete CER paragraph with a limitation.
Original evidence sheet: In a fictional school, staff inspected 80 waste items before new bin signs were introduced and another 80 items afterward. They counted 24 incorrectly sorted items in the first inspection and 16 in the second. At the same time, students also received verbal reminders about sorting. The items were inspected on two different days. The school wants a data-supported statement without claiming that the signs alone produced the change.
問11:Write a factual Claim about the recorded error rate.
問12:State the Evidence using original item counts.
問13:Calculate the first error percentage.
問14:Calculate the second error percentage.
問15:Give the change in percentage points.
問16:Write the Reasoning that connects the counts to the Claim.
問17:Identify one alternative explanation.
問18:Rewrite ‘New signs definitely solved the problem’.
問19:Suggest one stronger comparison.
問20:Write a complete CER paragraph.
Original evidence sheet: A fictional school asked thirty volunteers about a newly arranged study space. Twenty-two chose ‘satisfied’, six chose ‘not satisfied’, and two chose ‘not sure’. On another day, a counter recorded fifty entries through the study-space gate. The counter could record the same student more than once. No test scores, unique visitor counts or opinions from nonrespondents were available.
問21:Write a supported Claim based on the satisfaction survey.
問22:Provide the direct Evidence for this Claim.
問23:Calculate the percentage choosing ‘satisfied’.
問24:Is the ‘not sure’ category equivalent to dissatisfaction?
問25:Write a Reasoning sentence linking the fraction to ‘most’.
問26:Does the gate count establish fifty different visitors?
問27:Does the evidence establish an improvement in English test scores?
問28:Correct the Claim ‘Every student is satisfied’.
問29:Suggest one useful follow-up measure.
問30:Write a complete CER paragraph.
Original evidence sheet: A fictional school installed a refill station and counted sixty refill transactions in the first week and seventy-two in the next. A user could refill a bottle more than once. The school did not record the number of different users, how many disposable bottles were avoided or the electricity used by the station. The two weeks had different school event schedules.
問31:Write a limited Claim about the recorded usage.
問32:State the Evidence from the counts.
問33:Calculate the absolute change.
問34:Calculate the relative increase.
問35:Write a Reasoning sentence connecting the data with the Claim.
問36:May we claim that seventy-two different students used the station?
問37:Can the figures prove that seventy-two disposable bottles were saved?
問38:Identify one reason a week-to-week comparison may be misleading.
問39:Propose an appropriate next measurement.
問40:Write a complete CER paragraph.
1:The recorded germination rate was higher in the bright group than in the shaded group.
2:Fifteen of twenty seeds germinated in the bright group, compared with twelve of twenty in shade.
3:The bright group’s recorded germination rate was 75 percent.
4:The shaded group’s recorded germination rate was 60 percent.
5:The recorded difference was 15 percentage points.
6:Because both groups began with twenty seeds, comparing the germinated proportions shows a higher recorded share in the bright group.
7:Watering and group assignment were not controlled closely enough to isolate the effect of light.
8:In this small trial, a higher germination rate was recorded in the bright location.
9:A larger trial could assign similar seeds randomly and record equal watering conditions.
10:Claim: The bright group had a higher recorded germination rate. Evidence: Fifteen of twenty seeds germinated in the bright location, compared with twelve of twenty in shade, or 75 percent versus 60 percent. Reasoning: Because each group began with twenty seeds, the proportions can be compared directly, and the observed difference is 15 percentage points. However, seed assignment was not random and watering was not carefully recorded. The evidence therefore supports a descriptive difference in this trial, not proof that light alone caused it.
11:The recorded sorting-error rate was lower in the second inspection.
12:Twenty-four of eighty items were incorrectly sorted before the change, compared with sixteen of eighty afterward.
13:The first recorded error rate was 30 percent.
14:The second recorded error rate was 20 percent.
15:The recorded error rate fell by 10 percentage points.
16:Both inspections checked eighty items, so the lower count of errors in the second check also corresponds to a lower error percentage.
17:The verbal reminders may also have contributed to the change.
18:Fewer sorting errors were recorded after the signs were introduced, but the independent effect of the signs is unknown.
19:The school could compare similar inspection days while keeping other reminders unchanged.
20:Claim: The school recorded a lower sorting-error rate in the second inspection. Evidence: Incorrect items fell from twenty-four of eighty to sixteen of eighty, so the rate changed from 30 to 20 percent. Reasoning: Since both inspections checked the same number of items, the reduction in incorrect counts also reflects a ten-percentage-point reduction in the observed rate. However, verbal reminders were introduced along with the signs. The recorded difference therefore cannot establish that the new signs alone caused the improvement.
21:Most survey respondents selected ‘satisfied’ for the study space.
22:Twenty-two of thirty respondents were satisfied, six were not satisfied and two were unsure.
23:About 73.3 percent of respondents chose ‘satisfied’.
24:No. Two respondents chose a separate uncertain category.
25:Because twenty-two is more than half of thirty, ‘satisfied’ was the majority response.
26:No. It counts entries and could include repeat visits.
27:No. Test scores were not measured.
28:Most respondents reported satisfaction, but the views of all students are unknown.
29:The school could survey a broader group and record unique visitors separately from entries.
30:Claim: Most volunteers who responded to the study-space survey were satisfied. Evidence: Twenty-two of thirty respondents selected ‘satisfied’, compared with six ‘not satisfied’ and two ‘not sure’, so the satisfied share was about 73.3 percent. Reasoning: Twenty-two exceeds half of thirty and therefore supports the word ‘most’ for the respondents. A separate gate counter recorded fifty entries, but these are not necessarily fifty different people. Neither source measured changes in test scores or represented all students, so no broader learning benefit can be concluded.
31:The refill station recorded more transactions in the second week.
32:The counter recorded sixty transactions in Week 1 and seventy-two in Week 2.
33:The recorded count increased by twelve refills.
34:The recorded count increased by 20 percent.
35:Since seventy-two is greater than sixty, the count itself supports the claim that more refills were recorded.
36:No. The counter recorded refill transactions, not unique users.
37:No. The number of avoided disposable bottles was not measured.
38:The school’s event schedule differed between the weeks.
39:The school could measure actual bottle purchases and record how often people refill reusable bottles.
40:Claim: The refill station recorded more transactions in Week 2. Evidence: The counter increased from sixty to seventy-two refills, an additional twelve or 20 percent. Reasoning: Because the unit was the same in both weeks, the higher count directly supports the limited claim about recorded usage. However, repeat users could generate several transactions, and the school did not measure the number of disposable bottles avoided or the station’s electricity use. The event schedules also differed. The observed rise in refills therefore cannot by itself prove an environmental benefit.
