To what extent …? / How far …? / Justify your answer.
To what extent・How far・Justifyの設問が求めること
|---|---|
| To what extent …? |
| How far …? |
| Justify your answer. |
| Not necessarily / partly |
Original case: In a fictional school survey, fifty students responded to a question about guide maps. Thirty-five preferred digital maps and fifteen preferred paper maps. This was a voluntary preference survey. It did not ask nonrespondents for their views, and it did not test whether visitors could reach destinations using either map. The school also had no cost comparison or information about every visitor’s access to a smartphone. A student writer claims: ‘The survey proves digital maps are best for everyone.’
問1:Identify the claim being assessed.
問2:What percentage of respondents preferred digital maps?
問3:Which finding does the survey directly support?
問4:Does it support a claim about all visitors?
問5:Name an unmeasured criterion for ‘best’.
問6:Is this claim fully, partly or not supported?
問7:Write a justified two-sentence short answer.
問8:Explain why ‘seventy percent of all students’ is inaccurate.
問9:Suggest one useful follow-up test.
問10:Write a complete 65–100-word ‘To what extent?’ response.
Original case: Twenty-four volunteers in a fictional class followed a four-week review routine. Their group’s mean quiz score was 62 at the beginning and 69 at the end. Nineteen participants recorded higher scores, while five recorded the same or lower scores. The two quizzes were not equally difficult, and some students used additional study materials. There was no comparison group. A student report states: ‘The review routine caused every participant to improve.’
問11:What did the class observe about the mean score?
問12:Calculate the change in the recorded mean.
問13:How many participants did not record a higher score?
問14:Does the source establish that every participant improved?
問15:What design feature makes causal attribution difficult?
問16:Name another possible explanation of the score change.
問17:How far is the report’s causal claim justified?
問18:Write a direct three-sentence answer.
問19:Which wording is safer than ‘caused’?
問20:Write a 65–100-word balanced response.
Original case: A fictional school measured indoor air temperature at 1 p.m. on a single day. One classroom below a roof garden recorded 25°C; another classroom in a different part of the building recorded 28°C. The rooms had different window positions, student numbers and ventilation patterns. No repeated readings were taken, and no electricity-use data were collected. A poster claims: ‘The roof garden reduced classroom temperature by three degrees and saved energy.’
問21:State the recorded temperatures and their locations.
問22:What was the recorded difference?
問23:Did the school measure a before-and-after change in the same room?
問24:Name two factors other than the garden that differed.
問25:Was energy use measured?
問26:Is the three-degree temperature difference supported?
問27:Is the claim that the garden caused the difference supported?
問28:Write a justified short answer.
問29:Recommend a more appropriate follow-up design.
問30:Write a 65–100-word extent response.
Original case: In a fictional school, twelve science-club teams were asked whether they would like an extra Wednesday-evening laboratory session. Eight teams said they were interested, four did not express interest. The club did not survey other students. Teachers said that safe operation would require trained supervision, equipment checks and an approved closing procedure. A budget officer estimated additional costs at 25,000 yen per session; no late session had yet been held. The principal had not approved a trial. A report says: ‘The whole school supports the new session, and it is already safe and affordable.’
問31:Who was actually surveyed?
問32:What percentage expressed interest?
問33:Can the results establish a preference across the entire school?
問34:Which safety conditions were identified?
問35:What was the financial figure in the source?
問36:Had the proposed late session already happened?
問37:Had the principal approved the trial?
問38:How far does the evidence justify the report’s first claim?
問39:How far does it justify the safety and affordability claims?
問40:Write a 65–100-word balanced answer.
1:The claim is that digital maps are best for everyone.
2:Seventy percent of respondents preferred digital maps.
3:Digital maps were preferred by most survey respondents.
4:No. The survey cannot establish the views or needs of all visitors.
5:Actual navigation success or smartphone accessibility was not measured.
6:It is partly supported only as a claim about the surveyed respondents’ preferences.
7:To a limited extent, the survey supports digital maps because 35 of 50 respondents preferred them. It does not prove that they work best for everyone, since usability and access were not tested.
8:The denominator is fifty respondents, not the entire student population.
9:The school could compare real navigation success for both formats among a wider group of visitors.
10:The claim is supported only to a limited extent. Thirty-five of fifty voluntary survey respondents preferred digital maps, so the data show a majority preference among the respondents. However, the survey did not collect the views of nonrespondents or test whether people could successfully use either format. Access to smartphones and the cost of the systems were also unmeasured. It would therefore be inaccurate to claim that digital maps are best for everyone. A wider navigation trial would provide stronger evidence before the school made a final decision.
11:The group’s recorded mean rose from 62 to 69 points.
12:The mean increased by seven score points.
13:Five participants did not record a higher score.
14:No. Five participants recorded unchanged or lower scores.
15:There was no comparison group.
16:Quiz difficulty or additional study materials could have affected results.
17:The data show an observed mean increase, but they do not establish that the routine caused it.
18:The claim is not fully justified. The group’s mean rose by seven points, and nineteen students improved, but five did not. Without comparable quizzes and a control group, the change cannot be attributed to the routine alone.
19:The rise was observed during the four-week routine.
20:To a limited extent, the results are encouraging: the group’s recorded mean increased from 62 to 69 points during the four-week review routine, and nineteen of twenty-four students scored higher. Nevertheless, five participants did not improve, so the claim about every participant is false. The two quizzes differed in difficulty, other materials were used and no comparison group was available. These problems mean that the review routine’s independent effect cannot be established. A more comparable follow-up study would be needed before claiming a causal benefit.
21:The room below the roof garden measured 25°C, while another room measured 28°C.
22:The difference between the two readings was 3°C.
23:No. The readings came from two different rooms at one time.
24:Window position and ventilation patterns differed.
25:No. The source provides no electricity-use figures.
26:Yes, as a difference between two recorded room temperatures.
27:No. Other room conditions were not controlled.
28:The data support a recorded three-degree difference between two classrooms, but not the claim that the garden caused it. No electricity data were collected, so the claimed energy savings are also unsupported.
29:The school could repeat readings in more comparable rooms and measure energy use directly.
30:The poster is only partly supported. The two classrooms did show a three-degree difference at 1 p.m., with readings of 25°C and 28°C. However, this was a comparison of different rooms rather than a before-and-after measurement of the same room. Window position, occupancy and ventilation also differed, so the garden’s independent effect cannot be isolated. No electricity data were collected, making the energy-saving claim unsupported. Repeated measurements under more comparable conditions would be needed to evaluate the contribution of the roof garden.
31:The survey covered twelve science-club teams.
32:Eight of twelve teams, approximately 66.7 percent, expressed interest.
33:No. Students outside the club were not surveyed.
34:Trained supervision, equipment checks and an approved closing procedure.
35:An estimated extra 25,000 yen per session.
36:No. No late session had been held.
37:No. The principal had not approved it.
38:It supports interest among club teams but not support from the whole school.
39:Neither is established: required safety checks remain and no cost benchmark was given.
40:The report substantially overstates the available evidence. Eight of twelve science-club teams, approximately 66.7 percent, expressed interest in an additional evening session, but students outside the club were not surveyed. The proposed activity had not taken place, and the principal had not authorised a trial. Teachers required supervision, equipment checks and a closing procedure, while the budget figure of 25,000 yen per session was only an estimate. The evidence therefore supports interest within the club, not school-wide approval or proof that the proposal is already safe and affordable.
