Original fictional speech and evidence: A student project group is preparing a speech about a possible supervised Friday study-room trial. The room has 24 seats, and 20 were occupied at 4 p.m. during one afternoon spot check. A draft speech contains these lines. [A] ‘We counted occupied seats ourselves and can show our recorded method.’ [B] ‘Imagine wanting to finish your homework but having nowhere quiet to study after lessons.’ [C] ‘At that moment, 20 of 24 seats were occupied, or about 83.3 percent.’ [D] ‘This proves that every student needs the room open every night.’ The group has no data on daily visitors, staff costs or waiting time. School approval has not been given.

問1:Which line most directly appeals to the speaker’s credibility?

問2:Which line is primarily an appeal to the audience’s concerns?

問3:Which line presents quantitative evidence?

問4:Calculate the occupancy percentage to one decimal place.

問5:Why is Line D unsupported?

問6:Is a pathos appeal automatically a logical fallacy?

問7:What is needed to strengthen ethos beyond saying ‘trust us’?

問8:Rewrite Line D as a limited claim.

問9:What practical question should the speech acknowledge?

問10:Write a balanced 75–105-word persuasive paragraph.

Original fictional speech and evidence: A fictional school group prepared a message about its waste-sorting project. Staff inspected 100 items before a signage change and 100 afterward. They recorded 30 and 21 incorrectly sorted items, respectively. Verbal reminders were also given. The draft contains these lines. [A] ‘We used the same item categories and will provide our inspection notes.’ [B] ‘It is frustrating when materials that could be recycled are placed in the wrong bin.’ [C] ‘The error count declined from 30 of 100 items to 21 of 100.’ [D] ‘Anyone who doubts the signs clearly does not care about the planet.’ The trial did not measure long-term habits or isolate the signs’ effect.

問11:Identify the strongest ethos element in Line A.

問12:Why is Line B an example of pathos?

問13:Which line uses logos most directly?

問14:Calculate the change in the error rate in percentage points.

問15:What is problematic about Line D?

問16:Does the observed reduction prove the signs alone caused it?

問17:Write a respectful replacement for Line D.

問18:How can the group strengthen credibility without inventing results?

問19:Write one defensible conclusion.

問20:Draft an ethical persuasive paragraph.

Original fictional speech and evidence: A fictional school asked volunteers which notice format they preferred. Of 40 respondents, 26 chose digital notices and 14 chose printed notices. The group did not measure the opinions of nonrespondents or whether every student could access digital notices. Its draft says: [A] ‘We will report both response categories and the survey’s limits.’ [B] ‘Consider a student who cannot reliably open an online notice at home.’ [C] ‘The digital option was preferred by 65 percent of the respondents.’ [D] ‘Because digital is popular, printed notices have no value.’ The committee has not estimated printing costs or approved a change to the notice system.

問21:Which line supports ethos by acknowledging limitations?

問22:Which line is primarily pathos?

問23:What numerical claim in Line C is supported?

問24:Why does Line D overreach?

問25:What percentage of respondents preferred printed information?

問26:Is considering a student’s access difficulty an unfair emotional tactic by itself?

問27:Identify one unmeasured practical issue.

問28:Write a balanced claim.

問29:What evidence would strengthen the decision?

問30:Write a balanced persuasive paragraph.

Original fictional speech and evidence: A fictional school trialled an optional English reading club twice. It recorded 12 attendances in the first session and 18 in the second. Some students might have attended both. There were no reading-score tests, unique visitor counts or staff-workload measures. A draft announcement says: [A] ‘We will share the counts and state what was not measured.’ [B] ‘Reading together might make some students feel more connected to their classmates.’ [C] ‘The number of recorded attendances rose by 50 percent.’ [D] ‘This club has proved it makes everyone fluent in English.’ The school is considering whether a longer voluntary trial is practical, not announcing a permanent weekly programme.

問31:Which line most clearly signals ethos?

問32:Which statement is primarily pathos?

問33:Which line provides the quantitative logos element?

問34:Verify the reported increase.

問35:Why is the claim of fluency for everyone invalid?

問36:Does ‘might make students feel connected’ itself prove emotional benefits?

問37:How could the group strengthen its argument’s credibility?

問38:Rewrite Line D without claiming unmeasured learning gains.

問39:What decision remains pending?

問40:Write a persuasive but evidence-based paragraph.

1:Line A is primarily an ethos appeal because it refers to a transparent method.

2:Line B is mainly pathos because it invites listeners to imagine a student’s difficulty.

3:Line C is primarily logos, using the count of 20 out of 24.

4:The recorded occupancy was approximately 83.3 percent.

5:One observation does not establish the needs of every student or every night.

6:No. A relevant description of students’ needs can support a fair discussion.

7:The group should explain its counting method and the limits of its evidence.

8:The observation suggests that a small trial may be worth considering.

9:Whether suitable staff and safe departure procedures can be arranged.

10:Some students may find it difficult to study quietly after lessons, so their needs deserve consideration. Our group counted occupied seats in a 24-seat study room and recorded 20 occupied at 4 p.m. on one afternoon, about 83.3 percent. We can explain how we made this observation, but it does not show daily demand or the needs of every student. We therefore propose that the school consider a short, supervised Friday trial if staffing and safe departures can be arranged. The aim would be to collect better evidence before a permanent decision.

11:Offering the inspection notes and consistent categories supports credibility.

12:It appeals to the audience’s concern about wasted recyclable materials.

13:Line C uses the recorded counts and matching denominators.

14:The rate fell by nine percentage points, from 30 to 21 percent.

15:It attacks critics’ motives instead of answering their request for evidence.

16:No. Verbal reminders were introduced at the same time.

17:Questions about the signs are reasonable, and further checks could clarify their effect.

18:It can publish the inspection definitions, numbers and known limitations.

19:The recorded error rate fell, but the role of the new signs remains uncertain.

20:Accurate sorting matters to people who want usable materials to be recovered rather than wasted. Our group compared two inspections of 100 waste items each. Incorrect sorting fell from 30 items before the signs changed to 21 afterward, a nine-percentage-point decrease. We can provide our coding rules and counts so others can inspect the evidence. However, verbal reminders were also given, and long-term habits were not measured. Instead of dismissing those who question the results, we should repeat the checks under more comparable conditions before deciding how much the signs contributed.

21:Line A supports ethos through transparent reporting.

22:Line B asks listeners to consider a student’s access difficulty.

23:Twenty-six of forty respondents, or 65 percent, chose digital notices.

24:A majority preference among respondents does not make paper unnecessary for everyone.

25:Thirty-five percent of respondents preferred printed notices.

26:No. Accessibility is relevant to the decision if it is discussed without invented facts.

27:Internet access and printing costs were not assessed.

28:The school could explore digital notices while retaining an accessible paper option.

29:Feedback about actual access needs and a realistic cost comparison.

30:A notice system should help students receive important information regardless of their access to digital devices. In a voluntary survey, 26 of 40 respondents preferred digital notices, while 14 preferred paper. Our group can report these figures and the limits of the survey clearly. The digital preference among respondents is relevant, but it does not show that paper is unnecessary for every student. A student without reliable internet access may still need printed information. Before changing the system, the school should assess access and costs and consider a limited trial that keeps an accessible paper option.

31:Line A, because it promises transparent reporting of what was and was not measured.

32:Line B appeals to students’ sense of connection and belonging.

33:Line C reports a 50 percent increase in attendance records.

34:Attendance records rose from 12 to 18, an increase of 6 or 50 percent.

35:No language ability was measured, and the counts are attendance events rather than unique students.

36:No. It is a possibility that would require feedback to evaluate.

37:It could distinguish repeat attendance from different visitors and report staff requirements.

38:The club recorded more attendances in its second session, but its effect on English ability is unknown.

39:Whether a longer voluntary trial is practical.

40:Reading together may appeal to students who enjoy sharing books and meeting classmates. Our school recorded 12 attendance events at one optional English reading session and 18 at another, a 50 percent increase. These are participation records, not counts of different students, and no English-language improvement was measured. We will make that limitation clear rather than claim that the club has already improved fluency. If staff time and room availability allow, another voluntary trial could gather better participation records and feedback. Such a trial would help the school decide whether regular sessions would be useful and manageable.
