The library at a junior high school used to close at the end of the school week. Many students wanted a quiet place to read on weekends, so the school began opening the library on Saturday afternoons. The original plan was to open from noon until four. However, the school building needed cleaning earlier in the day, so the final opening hours became two to five.

Students can read quietly without registering. Those who want to join the short reading club, however, must register by Thursday. The club starts at two thirty and lasts forty minutes. Students may bring their own books, but they can also choose books from the library shelves. Laptops cannot be borrowed on Saturdays because no computer support staff are available.

Some parents asked if the school would open the library on Sundays too. The school has not decided. It will first collect students’ opinions about the Saturday program after one month. The staff hope the new hours will encourage more students to enjoy reading.

  • 2. Teachers wanted longer meetings.
  • 3. The school needed a new computer room.

  • 1. Noon to four.
  • 2. Two to five.

A school wanted to reduce the amount of food left after lunch. Teachers often saw vegetables on students’ plates, but they did not know why students left them. They decided to try different ways of serving the same dishes in three classes for two weeks.

In the first class, everyone received the usual amount of food. In the second class, students could ask for smaller portions before eating. In the third class, students also chose their portions, but the teacher gave a short talk about the local farmers who had grown the vegetables. The teachers weighed the food left after lunch each day.

The third class had the least waste, while the first had the most. The teachers were encouraged, but they knew the results might have been affected by differences between students. Some students may have liked the vegetables more than others. The school will repeat the project using the same students with different serving methods before deciding which method should be used across the whole school.

Q5 What did the three classes change for the project?

  • 1. How the same dishes were served.
  • 2. The vegetables grown by the farmers.
  • 3. The time at which lunch began.
  • 4. The type of school they attended.

Q6 Which class had the least food waste?

  • 1. The first class.
  • 2. The third class.
  • 3. The second class and first class equally.
  • 4. All classes had the same amount.

Q7 Why were the teachers careful about the results?

  • 1. No one weighed the waste.
  • 2. The food was different in every class.
  • 3. Students’ food preferences may have affected them.
  • 4. The project lasted for a full year.

Q8 What will the school do before choosing a method for everyone?

  • 1. Stop serving all vegetables.
  • 2. Ask families to bring lunch each day.
  • 3. Cancel the school lunch program.
  • 4. Repeat the test with the same students.

Dear Students,

This is an update about next month’s visit to the science center. We originally planned to leave school at eight on Thursday, but the center has moved our workshop to Friday. Our bus will now leave at eight thirty on Friday. Please meet at the school gate by eight fifteen. We need time to check attendance before boarding the bus.

The workshop is included in the price of the visit, but lunch is not. You can bring a packed lunch or buy food at the cafe. The cafe sometimes becomes crowded, so bringing lunch may save time. The gift shop accepts cash and cards. However, the small lockers accept only coins.

Students who have returned their permission forms do not need to buy tickets because the school has already paid for them. If you have not returned the form, hand it to your homeroom teacher by Tuesday. Students who cannot attend should also inform their teachers by Tuesday. We will then send the center our final list.

Best wishes, Your homeroom teacher

  • 2. Thursday at 8:00 a.m.
  • 3. Friday at 8:15 a.m.
  • 4. Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.

Q10 Why might bringing lunch save time?

  • 1. The science center has no cafe.
  • 2. The cafe sometimes becomes crowded.
  • 3. The school already paid for lunch.
  • 4. The gift shop is closed on Fridays.

Q11 What do students need to use the small lockers?

  • 1. Credit cards.
  • 2. Paper bills.
  • 3. Coins.
  • 4. Their school ID cards.

Q12 What must students do by Tuesday if they cannot attend?

  • 1. Buy their own tickets.
  • 2. Meet at the school gate.
  • 3. Reserve a table at the cafe.
  • 4. Inform their teachers.

A community sports center recently opened two after-school programs. The beginner swimming class takes place on Mondays and welcomes students aged twelve to fifteen. The basketball class is on Wednesdays and is open to students aged thirteen to sixteen. Each lesson lasts forty-five minutes, but participants should arrive fifteen minutes before it begins to change clothes and check in.

The swimming class has room for eight students, while the basketball class can accept sixteen. The center provides basketballs, so students do not need to bring their own. Swimming students, however, must bring swimwear and towels. Both four-week courses cost the same amount. Families registering more than one child receive a small discount.

Parents can check the number of available places on the website. They cannot complete registration there, however. To register, they must call the center during office hours. If a class is full, families can join a waiting list. The center may add more classes if enough people are interested, but no extra dates have been announced.

Q13 Which class is open to twelve-year-olds?

  • 1. The beginner swimming class.
  • 2. Only the basketball class.
  • 3. Both classes only on Saturday.
  • 4. Neither class because both start at thirteen.

Q14 When should students arrive?

  • 1. Exactly when the lesson starts.
  • 2. Fifteen minutes before the lesson.
  • 3. Forty-five minutes before the lesson.
  • 4. One hour after the class starts.

Q15 What must swimming students bring?

  • 1. Basketballs.
  • 2. A laptop and headphones.
  • 3. Swimwear and towels.
  • 4. A paper ticket purchased online.

Q16 How can parents register for a class?

  • 1. By completing a web form.
  • 2. By asking a swimming student.
  • 3. By visiting the center after it closes.
  • 4. By phoning the center during office hours.

A group of students used three sections of a rooftop garden to investigate how sunlight affects lettuce. Plants in the first section received sunlight for nearly the whole day. Plants in the second received direct sunlight only in the morning. The third section was shaded by a nearby wall for most of the day.

The students planted the same kind of lettuce in the same type of soil and gave every plant the same amount of water. After five weeks, they measured the leaves. Plants in the second section had the largest leaves. Many plants in the first section had smaller leaves with dry edges. The result surprised the students, who had expected more sunlight to be better.

Their teacher explained that the results did not prove that morning sunlight was best for every kind of plant. Temperature and wind may also have been different in the three places. The students decided to repeat the experiment in another season and record the temperature as well as the sunlight.

Q17 What did the students keep the same for all plants?

  • 1. The kind of lettuce, soil, and water amount.
  • 2. The hours of direct sunlight.
  • 3. The temperature in each area.
  • 4. The wind near the wall.

Q18 Where were the largest leaves found?

  • 1. In the first section.
  • 2. In the second section.
  • 3. In the third section.
  • 4. All three sections had equally large leaves.

Q19 Why did the teacher warn against a general conclusion?

  • 1. All plants were different kinds of lettuce.
  • 2. Nobody measured the leaves.
  • 3. Temperature and wind might also have differed.
  • 4. The experiment lasted just one day.

Q20 What will students record next time besides sunlight?

  • 1. The cost of vegetables.
  • 2. The number of students in the town.
  • 3. The height of the wall in other schools.
  • 4. Temperature.

A city museum has created an online exhibition about the history of local transportation. Visitors can watch short videos, look at old photographs, and listen to interviews with residents. The online materials are free and available at any time. They are especially useful for students who live far away or cannot visit the museum during its normal opening hours.

The museum also offers a live online talk with a historian on the first Saturday of each month. Unlike the recorded videos, the live talk requires registration because only a limited number of people can join. Registered visitors receive a link by email the day before the event. They can send questions during the talk, although the historian may not have time to answer every one.

The online exhibition has not replaced the regular museum. Visitors can still see many original photographs and objects in person. Some delicate materials, however, are shown only online because light and frequent handling could damage them. The museum hopes the two types of exhibition will help different visitors learn about the city’s past.

Q21 Who may find the free online materials especially useful?

  • 1. Students who cannot easily visit the museum.
  • 2. Only professional historians.
  • 3. Only visitors who have already paid.
  • 4. People who must attend the live talk.

Q22 What requires registration?

  • 1. Watching the recorded videos.
  • 2. The live online talk.
  • 3. Looking at the free photographs.
  • 4. Listening to the recorded interviews.

Q23 When will registered visitors receive the talk link?

  • 1. One week after the event.
  • 2. At the end of the month.
  • 3. The day before the event.
  • 4. Only after visiting the museum.

Q24 Why are some delicate materials shown only online?

  • 1. The museum has closed all in-person exhibits.
  • 2. The museum does not have any original materials.
  • 3. The historian is not allowed to speak in public.
  • 4. Light and handling might damage them.

  • 条件と例外の読み違え:only・must・do not need to・by Thursday・unlessを見落とさない。
  • 本文にない断定を選んだ:Some・may・canをall・always・mustへ強めていないか確認する。
