Data Dictionary
FICTIONAL LIBRARY DATA DICTIONARY.
Field visitor_key means a pseudonymous code for one registered visitor, not a real name. Field entries means the number of separate recorded check-ins during one school week. Field minutes_total means the total minutes recorded across all those visits; it does not mean minutes per visit.
DATA ROWS:
A01: entries=2; minutes_total=55.
A02: entries=1; minutes_total=40.
A03: entries=3; minutes_total=80.
A04: entries=0; minutes_total=0.
The four codes represent four registered visitors in the exercise. Three had at least one check-in, but the table contains six visits altogether. The time total is 175 minutes. One student described the data as “six different visitors spent 175 minutes each.” The data dictionary shows why both parts of that statement are incorrect. The secretary also warned that a registered visitor with no recorded entry was not necessarily absent from the whole campus; the table only measured this library’s check-ins. No personally identifying data were published in this fictional record.

FICTIONAL WINTER OBSERVATION — CODEBOOK.
Column day contains the weekday of observation. Column temp_C contains an observed temperature in degrees Celsius when a measurement is valid. Column status uses V for a valid reading and M for missing. NA is not a numerical temperature and must not be treated as zero.
ROWS:
Monday: temp_C=8.0, status=V.
Tuesday: temp_C=0.0, status=V.
Wednesday: temp_C=NA, status=M.
Thursday: temp_C=12.0, status=V.
Friday: temp_C=4.0, status=V.
The teacher asks students to calculate the mean of valid temperatures only. The four valid numbers add to 24.0 degrees Celsius, so the mean is 6.0 degrees. A student’s spreadsheet accidentally replaced Wednesday’s NA with 0.0 and divided the total by five, producing an incorrect mean of 4.8 degrees. The codebook explains that Tuesday’s zero is an actual observation, while Wednesday has no usable observation. The log contains five planned observation days, four valid measurements and one missing value. The exercise does not report a whole season’s average temperature.
問12. status=Vの意味は。
問13. status=Mの意味は。

FICTIONAL SCHOOL FACILITIES SURVEY — DATA KEY.
Response code A means “clearer signs”; code B means “more quiet seats.” Group X consists of twenty respondents, while Group Y consists of ten. The survey required each respondent to select exactly one option. These are labels for preferences, not scores of satisfaction.
TABLE OF COUNTS:
Group X: A=11; B=9; total=20.
Group Y: A=3; B=7; total=10.
All respondents together: A=14; B=16; total=30.
A student initially wrote that “most students preferred clearer signs” because A had a majority within Group X. But A received only fourteen of thirty responses overall, about 46.7 percent. Within Group X it received eleven of twenty, or 55 percent. The different denominators matter. The school did not explain how these groups were recruited, so the sample might not represent the whole school. Nor does a preference for quiet seats prove that changing seats will improve grades. The class agreed to report the code definitions, the group sizes and the exact population described by each percentage.

FICTIONAL READING PRACTICE — DATA DEFINITIONS.
Column words_read is the number of English words in the assigned passage. Column reading_minutes records the time spent reading, excluding breaks. Column correct_answers counts correct answers out of total_questions. Reading rate in words per minute is calculated as words_read divided by reading_minutes. Accuracy is correct_answers divided by total_questions, not by words_read.
ROW L1: words_read=900; reading_minutes=6; correct_answers=8; total_questions=10.
ROW L2: words_read=1,200; reading_minutes=10; correct_answers=9; total_questions=10.
For L1, the recorded rate is 150 words per minute and accuracy is 80 percent. For L2, the recorded rate is 120 words per minute and accuracy is 90 percent. A school poster claimed L1 was “the better performance” because it had a faster reading rate. The teacher said the conclusion was too strong: L2 had higher recorded answer accuracy, and the passages and questions might differ in difficulty. One record does not establish a student’s general ability. The data dictionary makes it possible to compare the two measures without treating either as the only definition of success.

1: A pseudonymous code for one registered visitor.
2: Separate library check-ins during the week.
解答3: Total recorded minutes across the visitor’s entries.
解答5: Three.
解答8: Three.
計算・解説:status=V。

解答22: More quiet seats.
解答29: About 46.7 percent.
words_readは課題英文の語数、reading_minutesは休憩を除いた読書分数、correct_answersはtotal_questionsのうち正解した設問数。
31: The number of words in the passage.
解答33: total_questions. 計算・解説:words_readではない。
Data 1|Model paragraph
The dictionary distinguishes a unique visitor from a recorded entry. Four registered visitor codes appear, but only three had at least one check-in. They accounted for six visits and 175 recorded minutes in total. The figures do not establish where visitors spent the rest of their time.
Data 2|Model paragraph
The codebook marks Tuesday’s zero as a valid temperature, while Wednesday’s NA represents a missing measurement. The four valid values sum to 24 degrees Celsius, giving a mean of 6.0 degrees. Replacing the missing value with zero and dividing by five would incorrectly produce 4.8 degrees.
Data 3|Model paragraph
Code A means clearer signs, not a higher score. In Group X, A received 11 of 20 responses, which is 55 percent. Across both groups, however, it received only 14 of 30, about 46.7 percent. The dictionary and the denominators prevent a subgroup result from being mistaken for an overall majority.
Data 4|Model paragraph
The data dictionary distinguishes reading rate from comprehension accuracy. L1 reached 150 words per minute with 80 percent accuracy, while L2 reached 120 words per minute with 90 percent accuracy. A higher rate does not prove better overall reading performance, especially when passage difficulty may differ.
→status=Mなら欠測であり、status=Vの0.0℃だけが実測ゼロ。
