NEW TREASURE Stage5のRead・Critical Writingでall、every、always、never、noneといった断定表現が出てきたら、本文に一つでも反例がないか確認します。

FICTIONAL ENGLISH PRESENTATION STUDY.
A class teacher compared twenty students’ scores on the same ten-point presentation rubric before and after a short practice programme. Sixteen students scored higher afterward, two had exactly the same score, and two scored lower. The class secretary initially wrote, “The programme improved every student’s presentation.” A student noticed that the statement was false even though a large majority improved. One unchanged score would be enough to contradict “every student improved”; here there were four students who did not improve. The teacher suggested a narrower statement: “Sixteen of twenty students received higher scores after the programme.” That sentence described the observations correctly. It did not establish that practice was the sole cause because there was no comparable group working without the programme. Some students may also have prepared independently. The study did not measure whether the improvement lasted until the following term. The class agreed that a counterexample to a universal claim is not proof that the opposite universal claim is true. It could reject “all improved” without claiming that “none improved.”

FICTIONAL SCHOOL MESSAGE SYSTEM.
An information club tested twenty messages sent through a prototype event-notification service. The school defined “on time” as arrival within two minutes of the recorded sending time. Nineteen messages arrived within two minutes. One message took six minutes. The club’s first advertisement stated, “Every notification arrives within two minutes.” The detailed log showed a counterexample, so that categorical statement could not stand. The club replaced it with, “Nineteen of the twenty test messages arrived within two minutes under the recorded conditions.” That claim did not predict what would happen for every future user. The late message came from an account using a different device, but the club had no evidence that the device caused the delay. The server log did not include the same network information for every message. A member suggested saying the system was unreliable because of one late arrival. The teacher pointed out that one counterexample disproved the word “every” but did not determine the overall performance of the service across all situations. The team proposed repeating the test with different devices and comparable records.

FICTIONAL LUNCH CONTAINER COMPARISON.
A school’s student committee considered the cost of reusable and disposable lunch containers. For a simplified exercise, a reusable container was assumed to cost 300 yen to purchase and another 25 yen per completed use for cleaning and checking. A disposable container cost 65 yen for each lunch. Under those assumptions, a reusable container would cost 425 yen after five uses, compared with 325 yen for five disposables. After ten uses, the estimated totals would be 550 yen for reuse and 650 yen for disposables. A poster originally declared, “Reusable containers are always cheaper.” The five-use example contradicted that universal claim. The ten-use case, however, showed that the reusable option could be cheaper under some conditions. The committee refused to claim that either option was universally best. It also noted that actual costs could be affected by lost containers, replacement expenses, return rates and operational requirements, none of which had been measured in the exercise. The proposed trial required responsible staff to check the practical and safety conditions before any purchase was approved.

FICTIONAL TEMPERATURE OBSERVATION.
A class compared shaded and exposed locations on six selected days at 12:30 p.m. The students used similar thermometers and recorded the local conditions. On Days One to Five, the shaded readings were lower than the exposed readings: 28 against 30, 29 against 32, 27 against 29, 30 against 33 and 28 against 31 degrees Celsius. On Day Six, both thermometers read 29 degrees Celsius. The class secretary proposed the headline, “Shade is always cooler at this school.” The sixth observation did not fit that claim: the readings were equal rather than lower. A revised report stated that the shaded location was cooler on five of six recorded days and equal on the remaining day. The measurements did not cover every hour or every location, and wind or proximity to buildings might have affected the results. A classmate argued that the counterexample proved shade had no effect whatsoever. The teacher corrected that reasoning as well. The one equal reading challenged an absolute statement but did not erase the five observed differences or establish their causes. The report kept the observations separate from broader hypotheses.

解答3: Two.

解答4: Two.

9: There was no comparable control group.

10: Sixteen of twenty students scored higher after the programme.

解答12: Arrival within two minutes.

18: The universal claim that every message arrives on time.

20: Nineteen of twenty test messages arrived within two minutes under the recorded conditions.

30: The cheaper option depends on the number of uses and the assumptions.

解答35: 29°C in both locations.

36: The shaded reading was equal to the exposed reading on Day Six.

解答38: Five-sixths, about 83.3%.

39: Airflow and proximity to buildings.

40: The shaded location was cooler on five days and equal on one day.

Case 1|Model paragraph

The data contradict the statement that every student improved. Sixteen of twenty scored higher, but two remained unchanged and two scored lower. A single non-improving student is enough to challenge an all-students claim. Nevertheless, the observations also do not prove that the practice programme caused the improvement, since there was no comparable control group.

Case 2|Model paragraph

One notification took six minutes, so the claim that every message arrives within two minutes is false. In the recorded test, nineteen of twenty messages arrived on time. This result does not establish the system’s long-term reliability, nor does it prove that the different device caused the delay. The club should collect additional comparable records.

Case 3|Model paragraph

A five-use example disproves the claim that reusable containers are always cheaper. Under the stated assumptions, reusable containers cost 425 yen for five uses, compared with 325 yen for disposables. At ten uses, reuse is cheaper. Therefore, the conclusion must depend on the number of uses and other conditions, rather than a universal slogan.

Case 4|Model paragraph

The shaded location was cooler on five of the six observation days, but it was not cooler on the sixth. That single equal reading contradicts the statement that it was always cooler. However, it does not prove that shade has no effect. The observations describe two locations at one time of day, and other conditions may also have mattered.
