英文のper、average、overall、in total、including waiting timeを正しく読みましょう。

A fictional high school tested two walking routes from a railway station. On a dry afternoon, Route A measured 1.2 kilometres, and one student completed it in 20 minutes without stopping. Route B measured 1.5 kilometres, and a different student completed it in 25 minutes without stopping. The students wanted to know which route was faster. The teacher reminded them that a shorter travel time does not always mean a higher average speed, especially when the distances differ. For Route A, the measured average speed was 1.2 kilometres divided by one-third of an hour, or 3.6 kilometres per hour. For Route B, it was 1.5 kilometres divided by five-twelfths of an hour, also 3.6 kilometres per hour. Both recorded speeds were equal in this example. The test did not prove that the routes would take the same time for every walker. It also did not include waiting at crossings, crowded conditions or difficulties for people who need a step-free path. The students decided to state both the distance and the recorded travel time rather than describe either route as universally best.

In a fictional classroom report, students compared two bicycle journeys on different days. Journey X covered 12 kilometres in 30 minutes, including a short stop at a traffic signal. Journey Y covered 6 kilometres in 20 minutes, including time spent waiting for another rider. The report used total elapsed time to calculate overall average speed, not the speed of the bicycle at every moment. Journey X averaged 24 kilometres per hour because 30 minutes is half an hour. Journey Y averaged 18 kilometres per hour because 20 minutes is one-third of an hour. One student suggested that the first bicycle must have travelled at exactly 24 kilometres per hour throughout the trip. The teacher explained that a single average cannot describe changes in speed or periods of stopping. Another student proposed comparing the journeys to judge which bicycle was technically better. The class disagreed because the routes, stops and riders differed. The figures are fictional reading exercises, not suggested cycling speeds or safety advice.

A fictional science club tested two ways of recording library books during an inventory exercise. A student using Method A checked 240 records in 12 minutes. Another student using Method B checked 300 records in 20 minutes. The number of records was not the same, so the club calculated the processing rate in records per minute. Method A averaged 20 records per minute. Method B averaged 15 records per minute. Although B completed more records in total, its average rate was lower in this particular exercise. The students had not measured how many entries were correct, so a higher processing rate did not necessarily mean better overall performance. The two students also worked with different lists. The team proposed a follow-up using comparable lists, the same checking rules and a record of errors. Its report stated that the figures described a single exercise, not the permanent ability of either student.

A fictional reading club recorded the time required for two students to finish different English passages. Student A read a 1,200-word passage in 8 minutes and answered eight of ten comprehension questions correctly. Student B read a 1,350-word passage in 9 minutes and answered five of ten questions correctly. Both students therefore had a recorded reading rate of 150 words per minute, although their comprehension results differed. A classmate wanted to announce that Student A was a better English reader. The teacher explained that the passages and questions had not been matched for difficulty. The exercise also did not show how either student would perform with several new texts. Word rate is one observation, while comprehension accuracy is another. A useful reading plan should avoid praising speed at the cost of understanding. The teacher suggested recording text difficulty, time and question scores for multiple passages before drawing stronger conclusions.

Aは1.2km÷(20/60時間)=3.6km/h。
解答6: One-third of an hour.
解答9: Neither; they were equal.
解答20: It cannot be determined.
解答30: Use comparable lists and record errors.
解答34: Eight out of ten.
解答38: Five out of ten.
解答39: They were equal.
40: No, because the passages and questions were different.
A faster processing rate does not necessarily indicate more accurate work. In the fictional library exercise, Method A handled twenty records per minute, compared with fifteen for Method B. Yet the activity did not count errors, and the lists differed. Similarly, two students may read at the same rate without achieving the same comprehension score. Accurate comparisons require clear units, comparable tasks and more than one measure of performance.
