NEW TREASURE(ニュートレジャー)Stage4・5の科学系ReadやProjectで、two-way table(2元表・クロス集計表)・row percentage(行割合)・column percentage(列割合)・conditional percentage(条件付き割合)を読み違えると、同じ数字でも全く違う意味になります。

  • Grand total:
  • Conditional proportion:
  • Association / Causation:

Original context: In a fictional school survey, thirty respondents were in Group A: eighteen chose digital notices and twelve chose print. Forty respondents were in Group B: eight chose digital notices and thirty-two chose print. The answer options were exclusive. These are respondents, not all students in the school. Row percentages show preferences within each group, while column percentages describe which group supplied responses to one option.

問1:How many people responded in Group A?

問2:How many respondents chose digital notices in total?

問3:What percentage of Group A preferred digital notices?

問4:What percentage of Group B preferred digital notices?

問5:What percentage of the digital-preferring respondents belonged to Group A?

問6:Are 60 percent and 69.2 percent answers to the same conditional question?

問7:What percentage of all 70 respondents chose digital notices?

問8:Which group had the higher within-group preference for digital notices?

問9:Does this sample establish the preferences of every student in the school?

問10:Write an accurate interpretation distinguishing row and column percentages.

Original context: A fictional class tracked voluntary workshop attendance and whether a student’s recorded quiz score increased on a later assessment. Among thirty workshop attendees, sixteen had an increased score and fourteen did not. Among twenty nonattendees, four had an increased score and sixteen did not. The groups were self-selected, quizzes may have differed in difficulty and no random assignment occurred. The table can describe associations but does not establish that workshop attendance caused score changes.

Workshop statusScore increasedNot increasedRow total

Column total203050

問11:How many people attended the workshop?

問12:How many people had increased scores across both groups?

問13:What share of attendees had increased scores?

問14:What share of nonattendees had increased scores?

問15:Calculate the difference in the within-group increase rates.

問16:Among students whose scores increased, what share attended the workshop?

問17:Does the 80-percent figure mean 80 percent of attendees improved?

問18:What percentage of all fifty students had increased scores?

問19:Can the difference establish a causal workshop benefit?

問20:Write a cautious results paragraph with denominators.

Original context: A fictional school invited two groups to a voluntary online survey. Among thirty students living closer to the school, twenty-four replied and six did not. Among forty living farther away, twelve replied and twenty-eight did not. The labels ‘closer’ and ‘farther’ are categories set for this teaching example; their definitions are not validated for real research. The invitation method was not compared across groups, so the table does not prove why response rates differ.

問30:Write a response-pattern summary in English.

Original context: In a fictional school equipment trial, forty devices of Type A were checked: thirty-six passed and four failed. Thirty Type B devices were checked: twenty-four passed and six failed. The types were tested under conditions that were not fully matched, and the test was short. These results describe the inspected items, not a manufacturer’s overall reliability or future failure probability.

模範英文でwithin / among / of all respondentsの指す集団を確認しましょう。

1:Group A had 30 respondents.

2:Twenty-six respondents chose digital notices.

3:Sixty percent of Group A respondents preferred digital notices.

4:Twenty percent of Group B respondents preferred digital notices.

5:About 69.2 percent of digital-preferring respondents belonged to Group A.

6:No. The first describes digital preference within Group A; the second describes Group A membership among digital-preferring respondents.

7:Approximately 37.1 percent of all respondents chose digital notices.

8:Group A had the higher rate: 60 percent compared with 20 percent.

9:No. Only survey respondents are represented.

10:Among Group A respondents, eighteen of thirty preferred digital notices, a within-group share of 60 percent. In Group B, eight of forty selected digital, or 20 percent. Overall, twenty-six of seventy respondents chose digital notices. Viewed by column instead, eighteen of the twenty-six digital-preferring respondents belonged to Group A, about 69.2 percent. These percentages answer different questions because they use different denominators. The survey does not establish the preferences of students who did not respond.

11:Thirty students attended.

12:Twenty students had increased scores.

13:About 53.3 percent of attendees had increased scores.

14:Twenty percent of nonattendees had increased scores.

15:The recorded rates differed by about 33.3 percentage points.

16:Eighty percent of students with increased scores had attended.

17:No. The rate among attendees was about 53.3 percent.

18:Forty percent of the fifty students had increased scores.

19:No. The groups self-selected and assessment difficulty was not controlled.

20:Sixteen of thirty workshop attendees recorded higher quiz scores, about 53.3 percent. Among the twenty nonattendees, four had higher scores, or 20 percent. The observed difference in within-group rates was approximately 33.3 percentage points. Of all twenty students who improved, sixteen had attended the workshop, meaning 80 percent of improvers were attendees. This last figure does not mean that 80 percent of attendees improved. Because participation was voluntary and quiz difficulty may have varied, the table does not establish that attending caused score increases.
計算と根拠:P(上昇|参加)とP(参加|上昇)を区別する。

21:Thirty closer students were invited.

22:Forty farther students were invited.

23:Eighty percent of closer students responded.

24:Thirty percent of farther students responded.

25:Thirty-six students responded.

26:Approximately 51.4 percent responded overall.

27:About 66.7 percent of respondents were in the closer group.

28:No. The response rate in the closer group was 80 percent.

29:No. Other differences in invitation access and behaviour were not assessed.

30:The closer group had thirty invitees, of whom twenty-four responded, giving an 80 percent response rate. The farther group had forty invitees, and twelve responded, or 30 percent. The combined response rate was thirty-six of seventy, approximately 51.4 percent. Looking only at respondents, twenty-four of thirty-six, or about 66.7 percent, belonged to the closer group. This is different from the 80 percent response rate within that group. The data describe an association but do not establish why the two groups responded at different rates.

31:Forty Type A devices were tested.

32:Thirty Type B devices were tested.

33:Type A’s observed pass rate was 90 percent.

34:Type B’s observed pass rate was 80 percent.

35:The rates differed by 10 percentage points.

36:Sixty devices passed.

37:Forty percent of the failed devices were Type A.

38:No. The observed failure rate in Type A was 10 percent.

39:No. The trial was short and testing conditions were not fully matched.

40:Among forty Type A devices, thirty-six passed, producing an observed pass rate of 90 percent. For Type B, twenty-four of thirty passed, or 80 percent. The difference between these within-type rates was ten percentage points. Across both types, ten devices failed, and four of those failures, or 40 percent, involved Type A. This does not mean that Type A’s failure rate was 40 percent; within Type A the recorded rate was four of forty, or 10 percent. The trial was short and conditions differed, so it does not establish long-term superiority.
