They also made a simple record of who had borrowed each item and when it should be returned. The project made it easier for students to (22) equipment without buying something they would use only once or twice.
From: David, Local Nature Museum
Subject: Family Nature Day
Thank you for volunteering at our Family Nature Day this Saturday. The activity was originally scheduled for the outdoor garden, but a storm damaged part of the garden path. We will therefore meet in the museum’s main classroom on the first floor instead. The program will still begin at 10:00 a.m.
Volunteers should arrive at 9:30 a.m. to help prepare the tables. Please bring a reusable water bottle. The museum will provide notebooks, pencils, and samples of different leaves. During the event, children will learn how to compare the shapes of leaves and record their observations. We expect several families with younger children, so the staff will explain the safety rules before the activities begin.
If you can no longer volunteer, please contact us by Thursday at noon. We will run another nature program next month, but volunteers must sign up separately for that event.

Two Gardens and a Question About Water
A science class wanted to find ways to reduce the amount of water needed for the school garden. Students had heard that covering soil with dry leaves could help keep it from becoming too dry. They prepared two small garden beds of similar size and planted the same type of vegetables in each one. In one bed, the students covered the soil with a thin layer of dry leaves. They left the other bed uncovered. The class measured the amount of water given to each bed during a six-week experiment.
At the end of the period, students found that the bed covered with leaves had needed less additional water. However, their teacher warned them not to say that the leaves were definitely the only reason. One bed had received slightly more shade during the afternoon. The teacher also noted that a six-week test during one season could not tell them what would happen throughout the entire year.
The students planned a second experiment using more garden beds in areas that received similar amounts of sunlight. They wanted to measure soil moisture as well as the water added. Some students suggested sharing the results with nearby schools, but the teacher asked them to collect more reliable evidence before making recommendations. The class learned that a promising result and a proven cause are not always the same.
Q26 Why did students conduct the garden experiment?
- 1. To choose a new school uniform
- 2. To find a way to reduce water use
- 3. To study which vegetables taste best
- 4. To decide where to build a gym
Q27 How were the two garden beds different?
- 1. They contained completely different crops
- 2. One was much larger than the other
- 3. One was covered with dry leaves and the other was not
- 4. Only one received any water
Q28 Why could the students not be certain that the leaves caused the difference?
- 1. They forgot to plant any vegetables
- 2. The two beds were at different schools
- 3. The experiment lasted several years
- 4. One bed received slightly more shade
Q29 What will the students do in their next experiment?
- 1. Use more beds with similar sunlight and measure soil moisture
- 2. Stop measuring the amount of water
- 3. Use only one garden bed with no vegetables
- 4. Replace all the soil with sand

I think students at my school would use a tool-sharing corner because it could save money and reduce waste. Your school’s new corner sounds helpful. How long may students borrow each item? Which kinds of tools are available there? I would like to try a similar activity.
I think students should be allowed to plan one school festival booth themselves. First, planning a booth can teach students how to manage a budget and divide tasks. For example, they could decide what materials to buy. Second, students may feel more responsible for an event when they make important decisions together.
