- Choice set:
- Preference uncertainty:
- Outcome measures:
- Not necessarily:
答案で必ず区別したいのがselection rate(選択した割合)とsatisfaction(満足度)です。
慶英会オリジナル読解|When More Options Are Not Always Better(全8段落)
[Paragraph 1] A bookstore can be delightful precisely because it offers thousands of possible discoveries. Yet the same abundance may frustrate someone who has only ten minutes to choose a single gift. This contrast raises a familiar question: can having too many options make decisions more difficult? A simple answer would be attractive. If more options were always harmful, shops and schools could merely reduce the number of choices they offered. But the relationship is not so straightforward. The effects of choice may depend on the person making the decision, the difficulty of comparing options, and the purpose of the decision itself. What appears to be a universal rule may actually describe only certain situations.
[Paragraph 2] Researchers use the expression choice overload to describe cases in which an abundance of options can reduce the motivation to choose, satisfaction, or confidence. However, reviews of the research have reached more nuanced conclusions than the popular statement “More choice is bad.” A 2010 meta-analysis reported that findings varied considerably across studies, while a later review identified conditions such as the complexity of the options, the difficulty of the task, uncertainty about preferences, and people’s decision goals. These are not identical conclusions, but they point to the same caution: without knowing the conditions, a large number of options alone does not reliably tell us how a person will behave.
[Paragraph 3] Imagine a fictional high school library planning a reading campaign. Its staff members want more students to borrow a book. One teacher suggests displaying six novels on a small table; another argues that a selection of twenty-four would give students a better chance of finding something they like. The school decides to run a small exploratory comparison rather than settle the issue by intuition. The volunteers are divided into two groups of twenty. Group A sees six books; Group B sees twenty-four. Each student has five minutes to choose one book for possible borrowing. The books are presented with similar cover information, but the students are not all equally familiar with the writers or genres.
[Paragraph 4] In this invented example, eighteen of the twenty students in Group A choose a book, compared with sixteen of the twenty in Group B. That is a selection rate of 90 percent versus 80 percent, a difference of ten percentage points. The smaller collection appears to perform better on this particular measure, yet the result should not be described as proof that six books are always superior. Twenty people per group is a small sample, and actual borrowing in a later week might tell a different story. In addition, the staff did not measure whether the chosen books were eventually read or enjoyed. Choosing quickly is one outcome; choosing well is another.
[Paragraph 5] The school’s debate becomes more productive when a student named Yuna asks which readers would benefit from more variety. Someone who knows exactly which genre they prefer might welcome a large collection because it contains more suitable titles. A beginner who has no clear preferences may find the same display confusing. Another student notices that options can differ in how easy they are to compare. Twenty-four nearly identical products may be harder to distinguish than twenty-four books organized by genre and explained with concise descriptions. The students conclude that the arrangement of options and the reader’s prior knowledge may matter as much as the number of books. A design that helps one audience may hinder another.
[Paragraph 6] The staff proposes a revised display with three sections: books for readers who enjoy mysteries, books for those interested in history, and books selected for beginners. Every section includes a short note about its intended readers. This design does not necessarily reduce the total number of titles. Instead, it makes the comparison task clearer. The library also considers letting students answer two brief questions before seeing recommendations. Such guidance may lower the effort required to decide, but it could also hide unexpected books that a student might love. The staff therefore plans to make the recommendations optional. Helping people choose is not the same as choosing for them.
[Paragraph 7] To evaluate the revised approach, the school would need more than a single count of quick selections. It could examine how many books are actually borrowed, whether students complete them, how satisfied they feel, and whether they return to the library. Even these outcomes require care: students might borrow books because of a school assignment rather than genuine interest. A longer study with well-defined measures and comparable groups could help clarify the effects, though it would still need to describe the limits of its findings. In good research, the outcome is selected because it matches the question, not because it happens to produce the most impressive number.
[Paragraph 8] The broader lesson concerns not only libraries but also choices about courses, study materials, and information sources. Variety can expand opportunities, while poorly organized variety can increase mental effort. People with clear goals may benefit from many alternatives; people facing unfamiliar decisions may need help identifying a smaller set of meaningful differences. The sensible response is neither to celebrate unlimited choice nor to impose a single option on everyone. Instead, designers should consider the decision-maker’s knowledge, objectives, and environment, then test whether their system actually helps. When reading an article about choice overload, a careful reader should ask not merely how many options were offered, but to whom, for what purpose, and with what measurable result.

I do not think schools should always offer fewer options. Having more choices can help students find what suits their interests, especially when they know what they want. However, a long and poorly organized list can make a decision difficult. Schools could group courses by purpose and explain the differences clearly. In this way, they can preserve freedom while reducing unnecessary effort.
always / can / especially / howeverなど、強すぎる一般化を避ける語句を残します。
