A shared song can encourage people to listen to unfamiliar languages. However, listening does not guarantee understanding. Schools also need discussions and learning opportunities. Therefore, a symbol should be treated as a starting point, not a final solution.

  • Qualification:may / might / some / not necessarily

[Paragraph 1] At a school assembly, a song may seem like a simple opening ceremony. Students stand together, a melody begins, and the event moves forward. Yet a national anthem is more than background music. It can tell a story about the people who have lived in a country, the values they hope to share, and the disagreements they have not fully resolved. A song that feels familiar to one listener may evoke difficult memories for another. For this reason, studying an anthem requires more than translating its words. We also need to ask who chose those words, which voices they represent, and how their meaning has changed over time.

[Paragraph 2] South Africa offers an especially useful example for this kind of study. According to information published by the South African government, the present anthem was established in 1997 by combining shortened portions of two earlier anthems. Its words use five languages: isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sesotho, Afrikaans, and English. The combination is striking because listeners must move across linguistic boundaries within a single performance. However, it would be a mistake to conclude that five languages can represent every person’s experience equally. A national symbol can invite inclusion without eliminating social differences. The important question is not whether a song can solve a country’s historical problems, but whether it can create space for people to recognize a shared future.

[Paragraph 3] Consider a fictional exchange between two students preparing a presentation. Naledi argues that a multilingual anthem can help citizens hear languages they may not use at home. Her classmate, Daniel, agrees that such recognition matters but asks whether hearing another language automatically means understanding the people who speak it. Naledi replies that recognition is a beginning, not a complete solution. Their disagreement is productive: neither student denies the value of the anthem, yet they distinguish its symbolic meaning from its measurable effects on daily life. This distinction is essential whenever we read an essay about national identity. An author’s approval of a symbol is not necessarily a claim that the symbol has achieved every social goal.

[Paragraph 4] The class then discusses translation. A student proposes creating an English explanation of the anthem for visitors. Another student worries that the explanation might make people think an English sentence carries every shade of meaning found in the original. Translators often face such choices. Literal translations can preserve the arrangement of words but sound unnatural, while freer translations can communicate a general message at the cost of some cultural detail. The class decides to provide a concise explanation beside the original language names and to make clear that the explanation is not a replacement for the performance. Their decision reflects an important principle: access to meaning and respect for the source need not compete.

[Paragraph 5] The teacher asks the class to evaluate three statements. First, the anthem contains several languages. Second, some students feel more included when they hear familiar words. Third, using several languages causes greater equality in society. The first can be checked against an official description. The second requires information about particular listeners, perhaps interviews or surveys. The third is a much stronger causal claim. Even if a survey finds a connection between familiarity and a sense of belonging, other factors may explain the result. Students who already feel included might simply respond more positively. Without a comparison or a stronger research design, the class cannot claim that one song caused a broad social change.

[Paragraph 6] To explore this issue, the class designs a hypothetical survey. Imagine that 80 students answer two questions before and after an assembly. One asks whether they recognized at least one language in a performance; the other asks how strongly they felt connected to the school. Forty-six students say their sense of connection increased, but the survey has serious limits. There is no comparable group that attended an assembly without the song, and the students may have been influenced by speeches, friends, or the atmosphere of the event. Furthermore, the survey concerns one school rather than an entire country. The numerical result is interesting, but it cannot prove a national effect. The students agree to describe it as an observation rather than a demonstration of causation.

[Paragraph 7] Their final presentation combines history, interpretation, and evidence. The opening slide explains the official background of South Africa’s anthem; the second examines the idea of listening across linguistic differences. The third presents the hypothetical survey with its limitations clearly labeled. Finally, the students invite their audience to reflect on an uncomfortable question: can a common symbol create belonging while allowing people to remain different? They do not offer a simple yes-or-no conclusion. Instead, they argue that inclusion requires both recognition and continuing effort, including education, conversation, and fair institutions. The anthem, in their view, is a possible starting point for dialogue, not a substitute for action.

[Paragraph 8] An advanced reader should notice how the argument develops. A familiar event introduces a question about national identity; official facts provide context; two competing perspectives complicate the issue; an imagined survey tests how far the evidence can reach. The final paragraph does not reject the anthem’s significance, nor does it exaggerate what the available information proves. This balanced structure is valuable in university entrance examinations and in academic writing. When asked to summarize the text, we should identify the central claim and its qualification: shared symbols may encourage mutual recognition, but symbols alone cannot establish equality. When asked to evaluate the argument, we should separate historical statements, personal interpretations, and causal hypotheses before deciding whether the conclusion follows.
