A: Why the project began / B: How a first comparison was made / C: A problem with the evidence / D: What the next stage should measure / E: Proof that all streetlights are harmful
Paragraph 1
At the edge of the fictional town of Alder Bay, an astronomy club noticed that fewer stars were visible from its school playground than from a nearby hill. Members wondered whether artificial lighting contributed to the difference. The club proposed a public observation project, hoping to help residents notice the night sky without asking the town to switch off lights that were needed for safety. Its first aim was to collect observations, not to announce a policy.
Paragraph 2
On six clear evenings, volunteers counted the stars visible inside the same small part of the sky. One group observed from the playground, where lamps were nearby, and another worked on the hill. On average, the hill group counted more stars. The teams followed the same written instructions, but they did not use identical instruments. The club recorded the weather and the observation time for each session.
Paragraph 3
Some students concluded that the difference proved streetlights were solely responsible. Their teacher questioned this interpretation. The hill and playground differed in elevation and surrounding buildings, and the volunteers had different levels of experience. The groups also had not measured brightness directly. The observation suggested a question worth investigating, but it did not establish which factor had produced the difference.
Paragraph 4
Before proposing any changes to lighting, the club decided to repeat the observations with matched instruments and the same trained observers at both locations. It also planned to measure sky brightness and consult residents about safe walking routes. Its report recommended considering scientific evidence and public safety together instead of choosing one objective without examining the other.

独自長文2|B|古い楽器を直すか交換するか
見出し候補:A: An unexpected maintenance problem / B: Competing priorities in a purchase decision / C: A trial with carefully recorded results / D: A conditional decision and next steps / E: Why the cheapest option is always best
Paragraph 1
The music room at fictional Harbor School contained a piano used by several classes. Some keys began sticking, and a technician reported that parts of the mechanism were worn. Teachers considered replacing the instrument, while others suggested a repair. Because the piano was needed for rehearsals, the school also had to decide how long it could remain unavailable. The principal asked for a comparison rather than a quick vote.
Paragraph 2
The purchasing committee listed several criteria. A new piano would require a larger payment immediately but might offer a longer period without major repairs. Repairing the old one would cost less at first, though future maintenance was uncertain. Students valued the familiar sound, but the committee could not use preference alone to establish which decision would be more reliable or economical over time.
Paragraph 3
The school arranged a limited test. The technician repaired four of the most troublesome keys, and teachers recorded how those keys responded across ten practice sessions. The immediate problem became less frequent, although this did not show how the rest of the instrument would perform over several years. A written estimate for a complete repair included a warranty shorter than that offered for a new piano.
Paragraph 4
The principal decided not to order a replacement immediately. The committee would compare total costs over several years, consider accessible temporary instruments for rehearsals, and review the technician’s full assessment. If the older piano could be maintained safely at a reasonable cost, repair remained an option; if not, replacement would be considered. The decision was conditional rather than a claim that one choice was always superior.

独自長文3|C|地域の方言を保存する辞典
見出し候補:A: A new idea for preserving speech / B: Different voices and meanings / C: Limits of a simple word list / D: A more responsible publication process / E: Evidence that one version of every word is correct
Paragraph 1
Students in the imaginary mountain community of Fern Valley wanted to create a small online dictionary of expressions used by older residents. Some phrases were unfamiliar to younger people, and students feared that these ways of speaking might become difficult to understand in the future. Instead of collecting words from books alone, they planned to record conversations and ask speakers how each expression was used in daily life.
Paragraph 2
Two residents gave different meanings for the same expression. One used it to describe a sudden change in the weather, while the other used it when plans were disrupted by a surprise visitor. Neither claimed that the other’s usage was wrong. Students also found that pronunciation differed between neighboring villages. These findings challenged the idea that every expression could be represented by one translation and one pronunciation.
Paragraph 3
At first, the team proposed listing a single short definition for each entry. Their language adviser warned that doing so could hide differences in context and usage. A dictionary made only of isolated words would not reveal who used an expression, in which situation, or with what tone. The team had recorded only twenty volunteer speakers and could not assume that their interviews represented every family in the region.
Paragraph 4
Before putting recordings online, students let speakers review the chosen excerpts and withdraw private remarks. Entries included example sentences, speaker-approved audio where available, and notes about variation. The students described the dictionary as an expanding record rather than a final authority. They invited other residents to contribute, while making clear which examples had been checked and which still needed verification.

独自長文4|D|学生食堂の季節メニュー
見出し候補:A: The question behind a menu change / B: Early results from a short trial / C: What the recorded figures do not prove / D: A decision based on more than popularity / E: Proof that one menu suits every student
Paragraph 1
A fictional college cafeteria wanted to introduce a seasonal menu featuring vegetables from nearby farms. The managers hoped to offer new choices while reducing the distance some ingredients traveled. They did not expect students to abandon every familiar meal. Before changing the whole menu, the cafeteria organized a two-week trial at one counter.
Paragraph 2
During the first week, staff sold 180 portions of the seasonal dish. In the second week, sales rose to 240 portions. Some managers described the increase as a sign of strong demand. Students who purchased the dish often praised its taste, but others said that the price was too high or that their dietary needs were not met. The cafeteria also recorded the quantity of unsold food at closing time.
Paragraph 3
These observations were useful, but several questions remained. The two weeks differed in the number of students on campus, and repeat purchases were possible. Sales figures did not show whether the dish reduced the cafeteria’s overall environmental impact. The managers had not calculated emissions from production, storage, or transport, and they had not asked students who avoided the seasonal counter why they did so.
Paragraph 4
The team chose to offer the dish alongside other options for another month. It planned to monitor portions sold relative to daily visitors, food waste, total cost, and accessibility for students with different diets. The managers said that a sustainable menu required evidence about several outcomes rather than popularity alone. They would reconsider the plan if the benefits could not justify its cost.
