Peer Review
|---|---|---|
| Identify | The paragraph overgeneralizes from a small survey. |
| Respectful feedback | Could you clarify which group this percentage refers to?
| Revision | Among respondents, 60 percent preferred … |
| Evidence / Limit | Nonrespondents were not included. |
| Final paragraph | Claim → Evidence → Limitation → Next step |
英語のコメントでは You are wrong. Could you specify the denominator?(割合の分母を明記してはどうでしょうか)や This claim may be too broad for the available evidence.(この主張は今ある証拠では広すぎるかもしれません)のように、どこを・どう直すかを示すことが有効です。
Fact sheet: A voluntary survey received 30 responses; 18 respondents preferred digital notices and 12 preferred paper notices. The opinions of nonrespondents were not collected.
Draft to review: Every student wants digital notices. Our survey proves that digital notices are always better than paper. The school should remove all printed notices immediately.

Fact sheet: A fictional club recorded 50 attendance events over four sessions. A student could attend more than once. Unique participants were not recorded.
Draft to review: Fifty students joined our club activities. This is proof that our club has fifty members. We have already attracted more people than any other club.
Fact sheet: One fictional class recorded 20 late homework submissions in Week 1 and 12 in Week 2. During this period, both a deadline-reminder message and a new timetable were introduced. Student reasons for lateness were not recorded.
Draft to review: Our new reminder message reduced homework delays by eight. This proves that reminders solve the problem. Every class should copy our method.
Fact sheet: The paragraph should explain how a school team checked whether visitors could find classrooms using a sign. Six volunteers tested it; five found the rooms without help and one asked for clearer arrows. Cost and long-term accessibility were not measured.
Draft to review: Our team tested a new school sign with six volunteers. Five found their rooms without help. Our school cafeteria also serves popular noodles. One volunteer asked for clearer arrows. This proves the sign works everywhere.

Fact sheet: A fictional committee considered a digital noticeboard and a printed weekly sheet. The digital option would require an online account; the printed option would be available without internet access. No decision was made.
Draft to review: The committee discussed a digital noticeboard and a printed sheet. It would need an account. This was easier. The committee decided that it was best.
Fact sheet: In a fictional school, 18 of 30 survey respondents preferred Option A, while 20 of 50 respondents preferred Option B in a separate survey. Different groups answered the two surveys; neither survey represents all students.
Draft to review: Option B is clearly more popular because twenty students preferred it, compared with only eighteen for Option A. Thus everyone should choose B.
Fact sheet: A school committee received comments from eight volunteers about a new reading area. Six found the space comfortable; two wanted quieter seating. The committee did not survey the whole school.
Draft to review: The new reading room is totally awesome. Obviously, only foolish students would complain about it. Everyone loves the space, so we must stop discussing improvements.
Fact sheet: A fictional science class measured ten plants in Group A and ten in Group B. Group A’s mean height rose from 5 cm to 12 cm; Group B’s from 5 cm to 10 cm. The groups were not randomly assigned, and watering conditions were not recorded carefully.
Draft to review: Group A was 12 cm high and Group B was 10 cm. Therefore, light definitely caused every plant in A to grow faster. We have proved the best gardening method for the whole school.
1:The draft generalizes from thirty respondents to every student.
2:Could you specify that the finding applies only to respondents, not all students?
3:Eighteen of thirty respondents preferred digital notices.
4:Nonrespondents’ preferences were not collected, so an immediate switch would require more evidence.
5:A voluntary survey received thirty responses. Eighteen respondents preferred digital notices, while twelve preferred paper notices. This result shows a preference among the respondents, not among all students. Because nonrespondents’ opinions were not collected, the survey does not establish that digital notices would be suitable for everyone. The school could ask more students about their access to each format before deciding whether to change the notice system. Printed information should not be removed solely on the basis of this small survey.
6:The number fifty counts attendance events, not different students or members.
7:Could you replace ‘fifty students’ with ‘fifty attendances’ and remove the unsupported ranking?
8:The club recorded fifty attendances across four sessions.
9:The record does not identify how many different students attended or how the club compares with others.
10:Our club recorded fifty attendances across four activities. This number represents participation events rather than different students, since some members of the audience may have attended more than once. The record does not show the number of unique participants or compare our club with other groups. We can therefore describe the level of activity recorded in these sessions, but we cannot claim to have fifty different members or to be the largest club. Future records could distinguish repeat visits from first-time participants.
11:The paragraph treats a change in counts as proof that reminders caused it.
12:Could you mention the timetable change and avoid saying that the reminder alone caused the decrease?
13:Recorded late submissions fell from twenty to twelve between the two weeks.
14:Both reminders and the timetable changed, so the cause of the decrease cannot be isolated.
15:A class recorded twenty late homework submissions in Week 1 and twelve in Week 2, a decrease of eight submissions. The school introduced a reminder message during this period, but the timetable also changed. Because both changes occurred and students’ reasons for being late were not collected, the results do not prove that reminders alone caused the decrease. The class could test the reminder process again while tracking deadlines and scheduling conditions. Wider adoption should depend on further evidence rather than the outcome of one short comparison.
16:The cafeteria sentence is unrelated, and the final claim overgeneralizes from six volunteers.
17:Could you remove the cafeteria detail and describe the result as a limited trial?
18:In a small trial, five of six volunteers found their rooms without help.
19:The sign should be tested with more visitors, and its arrows may need revision.
20:Our team tested a new classroom sign with six volunteers. Five visitors located their rooms without assistance, while one requested clearer arrows. This trial offers some useful feedback, but it cannot establish that the sign would work for every student or visitor. The team did not measure costs or long-term accessibility. Before using the design more widely, the school could revise the arrows and ask a wider range of visitors to test the sign. The revised paragraph focuses on the trial’s purpose, observation, limitation and next step.
21:The pronouns ‘it’ and ‘this’ are ambiguous, and the draft invents a final decision.
22:Could you name each option explicitly and avoid saying the committee had decided?
23:The digital noticeboard would require an online account, whereas the printed sheet would work without internet access.
24:The committee had not selected either option.
25:The committee discussed two ways to share school notices: a digital noticeboard and a printed weekly sheet. The digital noticeboard would require users to have an online account. In contrast, the printed sheet could be read without an internet connection. These differences may matter to students with different access needs. The committee had not selected a final option, so the paragraph should not describe either approach as already approved. A useful next step would be to ask intended users about access and costs before the committee makes a decision.
26:The draft compares counts with different denominators and ignores the different survey groups.
27:Could you report the response shares and note that different groups answered the surveys?
28:Option A was chosen by 60 percent of its respondents, while Option B was chosen by 40 percent of its respondents.
29:Because the surveys sampled different groups, these percentages do not establish a school-wide preference.
30:Two separate surveys reported preferences for different options. In the first, eighteen of thirty respondents preferred Option A, or 60 percent. In the second, twenty of fifty respondents preferred Option B, or 40 percent. The raw count for B was higher, but the respondent share for B was lower. Because different groups took part and neither survey represented the whole school, these results cannot establish which option would be preferred by all students. A future survey offering both options to a clearly defined sample could make the comparison more informative.
31:The paragraph uses informal praise, insults and an unsupported claim about everyone.
32:Could you replace the judgemental language with the actual feedback from the eight volunteers?
33:Six of the eight volunteers described the new space as comfortable.
34:Two volunteers requested quieter seating, so their concern deserves further consideration.
35:A school committee collected feedback from eight volunteers about a new reading area. Six participants described the space as comfortable, while two asked for quieter seating. These responses provide useful preliminary information, but they do not represent the views of every student. The committee should not dismiss the two concerns as unreasonable without examining them. Instead, it could review seating arrangements and invite more students to comment. A constructive report presents both positive and critical observations in neutral language and avoids making unsupported claims about the entire school.
36:The paragraph mistakes group averages for individual results and overstates causation.
37:Could you describe the mean changes and acknowledge the uncontrolled watering conditions?
38:Group A’s mean height increased by 7 cm, while Group B’s increased by 5 cm.
39:The groups were not randomly assigned, and watering conditions were not closely recorded.
40:A science class compared the mean heights of two groups of ten plants. Group A’s average increased from 5 to 12 cm, a gain of 7 cm, while Group B’s rose from 5 to 10 cm, a gain of 5 cm. The recorded difference between the mean gains was therefore 2 cm. However, the groups were not randomly assigned, and watering conditions were not carefully recorded. These results describe the two tested groups; they do not prove that light alone caused the difference or establish the best method for every plant in the school.
