|---|---|---|
| imply | 話し手・書き手が暗に示す | The writer implies that … |
| infer | 読み手・聞き手が推論する | We infer from the text that … |
| deduce | 根拠から論理的に導く | deduce an answer from figures |
| conclude | 検討して結論に達する | conclude that more research is needed |
| inference / conclusion | 推論/結論(名詞) | make an inference / draw a conclusion |
The writer implies that the decision is not final. The reader infers from the text that the decision is not final. imply thatとinfer fromの型を押さえてください。

A school committee discussed a proposal to keep the library open for an extra hour during examination week. Several students supported the idea, but the committee had no information about how many pupils would actually use the additional hour. One member said, “We should ask students before changing the timetable.” The chairperson approved a trial survey to collect opinions from different school years. She explained that approval of the survey did not mean approval of longer opening hours. Another student noticed that the minutes did not mention a final decision about the timetable and assumed that the proposal had been rejected. The teacher said that this conclusion was not justified. The absence of a decision did not imply rejection; it meant that the decision was still open. The report implied that more evidence was needed, but it did not claim that every pupil wanted longer hours. The students decided to collect responses first and ask library staff about supervision and costs. They planned to review the survey after one week. No change to the library timetable had been approved when the minutes were written.

More evidence was needed before deciding.
解答:No.
Read B|
A student group examined how many passengers used a school bus after a new notice had been placed near the entrance. On the first observation day, twenty-four people boarded the bus. On the second day, thirty boarded. Some students concluded that the new notice had caused the increase. Their teacher asked them to consider other possible explanations. The weather was different on the two days, and the timetable for after-school activities might also have changed. The class could deduce from the two figures that the recorded number of passengers had increased by six. It could not, however, deduce that the notice was the only cause. The notice itself said, “Please check the current timetable before travelling,” which implied that the schedule might vary. One member inferred that the bus had become more popular, but the teacher explained that two days of observations were not sufficient to establish a long-term trend. The group planned to count passengers on several more days and ask whether the same bus had been used each time. It wanted to draw a conclusion only after checking the conditions of the observations. The report separated what was directly measured from what could only be inferred.
Q37. Read B|
Q38. Read B|2

解答:No.
