1|The Interview That Was Not Recorded(録音されなかったインタビュー)
[1] When Aya joined the school podcast team, she was surprised by how quickly everyone worked. They already had a schedule, a shared folder, and a list of people they hoped to interview. Aya enjoyed editing audio, so she took responsibility for preparing the group’s first episode about local shops. Sota, the newest member, said that he would speak to the owner of a small bakery. He promised to report back on Thursday.
[2] By Wednesday evening, the shared folder contained interviews with a bicycle repairer and a florist, but nothing from Sota. Aya checked again on Thursday morning. There was still no audio file. She began to worry that the group would miss its deadline. At the meeting, she said, ‘We cannot use an interview that no one has recorded.’ Sota looked down at the notebook on his desk. He did not argue, but he did not leave the room either.
[3] After the meeting, the teacher asked Aya whether she had read Sota’s notes. Aya had not noticed the document beside the empty audio folder. It contained a careful list of questions and the baker’s answers. At the top was a sentence in small letters: ‘The owner agreed to an interview but asked us not to record his voice.’ Sota had written his notes during the conversation and then asked the baker to check the quotations he hoped to use.
[4] ‘I thought the missing file meant you had not done the work,’ Aya told Sota later. ‘I should have asked first.’ Sota replied that he should have mentioned the recording request at the meeting. They agreed to use a short written summary in the episode and explain why no audio clip was included. They would also ask the baker to approve the final wording before publication.
[5] The episode took longer to finish than Aya had expected, yet she considered it better than her original plan. A silent folder, she realised, did not always mean that nothing had happened. The next time something seemed missing, she would begin with a question rather than a conclusion.

短編2|The Photograph Without a Date(日付のない写真)
[1] Haruto found the photograph inside a book donated to the community history room. It showed a row of wooden shops beside a river. On the back, someone had written ‘Our town, early spring,’ but there was no year. Haruto recognised the shape of the bridge in the distance and thought the picture might be a hundred years old. He wanted to include it in an exhibition about the town before the railway arrived.
[2] His friend Nao was less certain. ‘If the railway opened in the 1920s, we need proof that the picture was taken earlier,’ she said. Haruto pointed to the old-looking roofs and narrow street. Nao answered that buildings could remain standing for decades. Their teacher suggested looking for details that could be checked independently. The students searched local maps and found that the bridge in the photograph had been rebuilt several times.
[3] While examining a magnified copy, Nao noticed a small sign attached to one shop. Most of its letters were unclear, but she could read the word ‘RADIO’. Haruto wondered whether the word might be part of a shop’s name. He had never seen that sign in the oldest photographs of the area. Still, the students could not establish when the sign had first appeared. The new detail made Haruto less confident, but it did not give them an exact date.
[4] A local archivist examined their notes. She explained that the style of the bridge alone could not identify a year, because parts of the structure had been reused. She recommended comparing photographs from several collections and looking for dated business records. She did not say that Haruto’s guess was impossible. Instead, she asked them to label it as an unconfirmed estimate.
[5] On the day of the exhibition, Haruto placed the photograph beside a short explanation. It read, ‘The location is likely to be this riverfront, but the date has not been confirmed.’ A visitor asked why they had displayed a picture they could not date. Haruto replied, ‘Because the questions it raises are part of our town’s history, too.’ He no longer thought that an old-looking picture had to tell a simple story.
