a number of students are … とthe number of students is … では、動詞の数が違います。 a number of＋複数名詞は「何人もの・多くの〜」という数量を表し、通常複数扱いです。一方、the number of＋複数名詞は「〜の数」であり、主語の中心は単数名詞numberなので単数動詞になります。A number of applications have arrived.とThe number of applications has increased.を英作文で書き分けられるよう、慶英会独自40問・初見Read2題・全和訳を用意しました。

結論｜a number ofは複数、the number ofは単数

the number ofの直後が複数でも動詞は単数

The number of visitors has increased.ではvisitorsが複数でも、主語の中心はnumberです。動詞はhasとなります。A number of visitors have arrived.では訪問者という複数の人が主語の中心になり、haveとなります。

many a student hasの例外も確認

Many a student has made the same mistake.のように、many a＋単数名詞は意味では多数を示しますが、文法的には単数動詞を使います。一般的な英作文ではMany students have … のほうが簡単で自然な場面が多くあります。

人数の文法と、情報の正確さを分ける

A school language club invited pupils to apply for a speaking workshop. The number of applications reached thirty-two before the deadline. A number of applicants asked the office whether they could change their selected session. The staff responded to their questions but did not approve every request. After reviewing the applications, the committee selected twenty pupils. Each selected applicant then received a message asking whether they could attend on Saturday. By Thursday evening, fourteen had confirmed their availability and six had not replied. One member said, “The number of applicants is thirty-two, so thirty-two students will attend.” The teacher explained that this statement confused applications, selections and confirmations. She also asked the group to distinguish “a number of pupils have replied” from “the number of replies has increased.” The first focused on the people; the second on the total count. The club planned to contact the six pupils who had not replied and record actual attendance after the event. No final attendance number was available when the report was written.

全文和訳：学校の英語クラブはスピーキング講習の応募を募り、締切前に申込みは32件に達した。数人の応募者が希望時間の変更を問い合わせ、職員は回答したが全件を承認したわけではなかった。審査後、委員会は20人を選抜し、土曜に参加できるか尋ねた。木曜夜までの確認済みは14人で、6人は未返信だった。申込みが32件だから32人が出席すると述べた生徒に、先生は申請・選抜・確認を混同していると説明した。a number of pupils have repliedは複数の生徒に焦点があり、the number of replies has increasedは返信総数が増えたことを表す。班は未返信の6人に連絡し、実出席は開催後に記録する予定だった。

A student council wanted to add more reading materials to a small school library. At the start of the project, the shelves contained eighty books that pupils could borrow. Families later donated twenty more books. A number of volunteers checked the donations for missing pages and damaged covers. The team found that sixteen of the donated books were suitable for use immediately, while four required repairs. A pupil said, “The number of books has increased by twenty, so there are one hundred usable books.” The librarian explained that the count of donated books and the count of usable books were different. Until the four damaged books had been repaired, only sixteen could be added to the existing eighty. The total number of usable books was therefore ninety-six. Some volunteers suggested repairing the other four, but no completion date had been agreed. The final report separated items received, items checked, items ready for borrowing and items still awaiting repair. It used singular verbs with the number of … and plural verbs with a number of volunteers.

全文和訳：生徒会は学校図書室の本を増やそうとし、最初は貸出可能な本が80冊あった。その後家庭から20冊が寄付され、何人かのボランティアが欠けたページや傷んだ表紙を点検した。16冊はすぐ使えたが4冊は修理が必要だった。寄付が20冊だから利用可能な本は100冊になったと述べた生徒に、司書は寄付された数と使える数は異なると説明した。修理が終わるまでは80＋16＝96冊が利用可能だった。残り4冊の修理案はあったが完了日は未定だった。報告は受領・点検・貸出可能・修理待ちを分け、the number ofには単数動詞、a number of volunteersには複数動詞を使った。
