① a number of students are｜「複数の生徒」が主語
A number of students have joined the club. では実際に参加した生徒が複数いるのでhaveを使います。a number ofは「かなりの数」という意味ですが、具体的な人数は示しません。
② the number of students is｜主語の中心はnumber
The number of students has increased. は「生徒数が増えた」です。studentsが複数でも、主語の中心はthe numberという単数の名詞です。The total number of students is … も同様に考えます。
③ the amount of information｜不可算名詞に注意
Informationやequipment、waterなどの不可算名詞に対しては、a large amount of information was collected のように表現します。数えたいときはthree pieces of informationのように単位を付けます。
④ percent of＋名詞とthe percentage ofは主語が異なる
Seventy percent of the students were present. は複数の人への割合です。一方 The percentage of students who were present was high. は「割合」という単数主語です。百分率とthe percentageを同じものとして動詞を決めないでください。
⑤ 割合・増加率は分母を先に決める
40人中30人なら30÷40＝75％です。人数が20人から30人へ増えたら、増加率は(30−20)÷20＝50％。数字の英文を読むときも母数・対象・時点・実測を先に確認します。

are／is、have／hasの選択だけでなく、文全体の主語が数量そのものか複数の人かを説明してください。

Forty students responded to a survey about the school exhibition guide. Thirty of them preferred the online version, while ten preferred the printed version. The percentage of respondents choosing the online version was therefore seventy-five percent. However, not all students in the grade responded. The council reported the preferences of these forty students and did not claim that seventy-five percent of the entire grade preferred the online version.
独自英文B｜理科部の機材点検
The science club checked twelve devices on Monday and eighteen on Tuesday. The number of devices checked each day increased by fifty percent from Monday to Tuesday. A number of volunteers helped with the work, but the report did not record the exact number of volunteers. Some devices had not yet been checked, so the club did not claim that every device was safe. The figures described completed checks, not the safety of the remaining equipment.

40問を各1点で自己採点。主語と動詞の一致が正しくても、標本割合を全校生徒の割合と読み替えたり、未点検の機材を安全と断定したりした答えは誤りです。

情報を不可算の量として述べるならinformationが標準で、informationsとしません。
