関係詞の5つの基本｜何を説明するか

主格と目的格の違い：The boy who lives here のwhoはlivesの主語なので省略できません。一方、The book that I borrowed ではthatがborrowedの目的語であり、The book I borrowed と省略できることがあります。ただし主語や動詞を消してよいわけではありません。

- 1. 先行詞：説明されている名詞が人・物・場所・時のどれかを確認する。
- 2. 関係節の中：主語が足りないなら主格、目的語が足りないなら目的格を考える。

The student reading a book と The student who is reading a book の意味は近いですが、単純にあらゆる関係詞節からwhoとbe動詞を削除すればよいわけではありません。文の時制・受動・意味を確かめ、自然な表現へ直します。

whoは人を、whichは物・動物などを説明する関係詞として使います。thatは多くの主格・目的格の場面で使えます。
Q. 関係代名詞を省略できるのはいつですか？
基本的に目的格では省略できることがあります。主格を単純に省くことはできません。
Q. whoseは誰に使いますか？
whose＋名詞で所有・所属を説明します。人だけでなく物に使うこともあります。
Q. whereとwhichは同じですか？
