however / instead / rather than / although / even if / not necessarily / yet
all、only、always、never、already、guarantee、completely
some / may / might が all / must / will に変わる。例:Some researchers suggest… → All researchers have proved…
The university proposed a trial. → The university has completed its nationwide program.
Borrowers liked the idea, so the library eliminated copyright restrictions.
Some residents worried… → The writer concludes that the policy must fail.
More complete observation forms → The river became cleaner.

Paragraph 1
A university library recently noticed that students were borrowing printed textbooks for much longer than expected. Because popular books were often unavailable before examinations, some students suggested creating a system for sharing digital copies. Library staff supported the goal of improving access, but they warned that purchasing a book did not necessarily give the university permission to distribute an electronic version. The university needed to examine licensing agreements before taking action.
Paragraph 2
Instead, the library proposed working directly with publishers to provide temporary digital access to selected materials. Under the proposed arrangement, the number of simultaneous users would be limited. Students could read the material for an agreed period, but they could not download unlimited copies. Some students were disappointed by these restrictions. However, the librarians argued that the limits could make cooperation possible while protecting authors’ rights.
Paragraph 3
The library also planned to collect anonymous information about demand. It would record which titles were requested most often and whether students had trouble using the service. These results might help administrators decide which materials to license in the future. The project had not yet been approved, and staff expected several months of negotiations. Even if the university eventually introduced the service, librarians said they would continue lending printed books because not all students preferred reading on screens.

Paragraph 1
A small town wanted to learn more about changes in a local river. Professional researchers had tested the water several times a year, but these visits did not always capture conditions after heavy rain. A community organization suggested training volunteers to observe the river more frequently. The plan seemed attractive because residents already walked along the river and knew which areas were difficult to access.
Paragraph 2
At first, organizers considered asking volunteers to use inexpensive testing kits. Researchers cautioned that the kits would not always produce results as precise as laboratory measurements. An inexperienced volunteer might also record an observation in a different way from a trained scientist. Instead of treating the volunteers’ reports as replacements for professional research, the team designed a simple method for collecting consistent information. Volunteers would photograph designated locations, note weather conditions, and record visible changes, while trained staff would perform more complex tests.
Paragraph 3
The organizers then introduced a small pilot involving ten volunteers. They discovered that participants found the observation form confusing and often omitted the time of day. The team revised the form and provided an illustrated guide. During a second trial, more reports contained the required information. Nevertheless, the researchers said it was too early to conclude that the river’s overall condition had improved or worsened. The reports were intended to reveal possible changes that deserved closer investigation, not to establish a final scientific judgment on their own.

- B. Professional researchers refused to visit the river.
- C. Residents had already proved the river was polluted.
- D. The community organization owned a laboratory.

- A. The kits were more accurate than laboratories.
- B. All volunteers could use them without training.
- C. They might not be as precise as laboratory tests.
- D. They were illegal to own.
