They、These residents、These measurements
Paragraph 1
A coastal town received complaints that a riverside walking path was difficult to use after sunset. Local officials initially proposed installing brighter lamps along the entire route. They expected the lights to make obstacles easier to see and help residents feel more comfortable walking in the evening. (1) These residents said the town should consider the effects on animals living near the river before making permanent changes.
Paragraph 2
Engineers suggested testing several types of lamps along one short section of the path. Some lamps would direct their light mainly toward the ground, while others would become dimmer when the path was empty. The engineers wanted to compare the alternatives rather than assume that the brightest option was the safest. (2) These measurements would help officials understand whether better visibility could be achieved without a large increase in electricity use or unnecessary light near the water.
Paragraph 3
During the first month, volunteers found that some lamps were difficult to notice from certain corners. The engineers adjusted their positions and gathered more observations. Yet the town had not decided which model to purchase. (3) Officials therefore scheduled a second trial during another season, when the path might be used at different hours. The final decision would depend on the combined results, not merely on the number of favorable comments after the first test.
Question 1|
- A. For example, the town had already completed a large wildlife survey.
- B. However, some residents were worried that additional light might disturb wildlife.
- C. As a result, every resident agreed that the town should install all the lamps immediately.
- D. Similarly, neighboring towns removed all riverside vegetation.
B However, some residents were worried that additional light might disturb wildlife.
Question 2|
- A. They planned to record how clearly walkers could see obstacles, the electricity used, and the amount of light reaching the river.
- B. They therefore decided to cancel all comparisons and select the most powerful lights.
- C. They instructed volunteers to report only positive comments from residents.
- D. They replaced the entire path with a concrete road before collecting evidence.
A They planned to record how clearly walkers could see obstacles, the electricity used, and the amount of light reaching the river.
Question 3|
- A. In other words, the first test had already proved that the path was safe in every situation.
- B. Because the weather and patterns of use could change, one month’s observations were not sufficient.
- C. The town announced that no further inspections would ever be necessary.
- D. The report guaranteed that wildlife had been unaffected by the lighting.
B Because the weather and patterns of use could change, one month’s observations were not sufficient.
Paragraph 1
An old railway station had stood empty since trains were rerouted around a small town. The council proposed converting the building into a center where residents could attend workshops and display local history. Many people welcomed the idea because the station had been a familiar landmark for generations. (4) They explained that the building’s narrow corridors and uneven floors could make large public events difficult and might create problems for visitors with limited mobility.
Paragraph 2
Rather than abandon the project, the council asked designers to investigate several smaller uses for the building. A few rooms could host exhibits, while other spaces might be reserved for workshops with limited attendance. (5) The council believed that examining these options would be more responsible than promising an immediate reopening without knowing the costs.
Paragraph 3
Another challenge concerned the station’s historical appearance. Residents wanted important architectural features to be preserved, yet modern safety rules might require new entrances and equipment. Officials organized meetings at which specialists could explain the trade-offs and residents could suggest priorities. (6) The council therefore decided to publish a feasibility report before choosing a design. The report would identify which parts of the station could be reused safely, what changes were required, and whether the projected costs were reasonable.
Question 4|
- A. Some visitors suggested that the railway should reopen the old line immediately.
- B. However, architects and accessibility advisers raised practical concerns about the proposal.
- C. As a result, all historical buildings in the region were demolished.
- D. Meanwhile, the council announced that the building no longer needed safety inspections.
B However, architects and accessibility advisers raised practical concerns about the proposal.
Question 5|
- A. The designers would estimate renovation expenses and consider ways to improve access without altering every room.
- B. The designers promised that no changes would be needed to comply with safety rules.
- C. The council ordered residents to stop using all other community buildings.
- D. The railway operator agreed to pay every possible future cost.
A The designers would estimate renovation expenses and consider ways to improve access without altering every room.
次文 examining these options, knowing the costs が受ける。
Question 6|
- A. The meetings showed that the building’s future involved choices that could not satisfy every goal automatically.
- B. The meetings proved that every visitor could already use the station safely.
- C. The town decided to remove every historical feature to save time.
- D. The council canceled the report because the public had no concerns.
A The meetings showed that the building’s future involved choices that could not satisfy every goal automatically.
