3. What else might explain it?=予備知識・自己選択・回答者の違いなど別の要因は何か。4. What will be tested next?=比較条件やサンプルをどのように改善するか。

A community center tested an online form for booking study rooms. The old form left the room type blank until users made a selection. In a new version, a standard room was already selected when the form opened. During a small trial, more users submitted bookings for the standard room. Some organizers claimed that this showed a strong preference for the standard option. A researcher disagreed. Users might have chosen it because it was selected by default, because they were in a hurry, or because they actually wanted it. The trial did not ask people why they accepted the preselected choice. The researcher proposed testing another version with no default option and collecting feedback about the clarity of the form. The center agreed to continue the trial rather than make the new design permanent immediately.

A school compared two ways of taking notes during a short lecture. One group of students wrote notes by hand, while another used laptops. After the lesson, both groups answered questions about the topic. The laptop group finished the written quiz slightly faster on average, but some students in that group had prior experience with the subject. The teacher therefore warned that note-taking method alone might not explain the difference. In addition, the school did not measure how much information the students would remember a month later. Several parents asked the school to require laptop notes in every class, but the teacher argued that such a decision would be premature. The school plans a larger comparison with similar starting knowledge and will also ask students which method helps them review materials effectively.

A public library produced recorded explanations of local history exhibits. Some listeners complained that the standard playback speed was difficult to follow. The library therefore offered a slower option during a trial. People who selected the slower version were more likely to report that they understood the explanation. However, the survey was voluntary, and visitors chose their own playback speed. The librarian explained that people selecting the slower speed might already have different needs from those selecting the standard speed. The trial could show what some listeners preferred, but it could not establish that the slower speed would improve comprehension for everyone. The library plans to test the same material at different speeds with a more balanced group of participants while retaining an option to adjust playback speed.

A town surveyed residents about two proposed changes to a park: adding more benches and replacing some lamps. In one questionnaire, residents answered questions about benches before questions about lighting. Another questionnaire presented the lighting questions first. The groups returned different patterns of responses. Some officials suggested that residents had changed their priorities within a few weeks. A survey designer noted that the questionnaires had been distributed to different groups and that the order of the questions might have affected what people focused on. Neither explanation had been established. The town decided not to describe the two surveys as proof of changing public opinion. Instead, it planned to repeat the questionnaire with a consistent method and compare responses across similar groups before selecting a project.

A volunteer group tested two schedules for checking labels on donated books. One team took a short break halfway through, while another worked continuously for the same total period. At the end of the activity, the team with a break had made fewer labeling mistakes. Some organizers concluded that breaks always improve accuracy. A coordinator cautioned that the groups had not been assigned randomly and that the tasks might not have been equally difficult. The group also did not know whether longer breaks would lead to the same result. The coordinator suggested a new trial in which volunteers would handle comparable tasks and the break schedule would be assigned in advance. Until then, the existing observation could suggest a useful question but was not proof of a rule that applied to every volunteer.

Q21. What was observed in the trial?

A. The break-taking team made fewer labeling mistakes

B. Every volunteer preferred to stop working

C. All books were labeled incorrectly

D. Long breaks were proven most effective

Q22. Why was the universal claim premature?

An art gallery tried placing small symbols beside its exhibit descriptions. Curators hoped that repeated symbols would help visitors connect related artworks in different rooms. In a short pilot, some visitors who noticed the symbols were able to recall connections between exhibits when asked afterward. However, the gallery had not measured how well visitors remembered the same information without symbols. It was also possible that people who noticed the symbols were already more interested in the exhibition. One curator proposed keeping the symbols temporarily while testing alternative layouts. Another suggested adding a clear explanation of what the symbols meant. The gallery decided to gather feedback from people who did not notice the symbols before claiming that the design improved memory. The goal was to distinguish interest and attention from an actual effect of the symbols.

Q26. What was the purpose of repeated symbols?

A. To help visitors connect related artworks

B. To replace every artwork with a symbol

C. To limit the number of galleries

D. To prevent visitors from remembering the exhibits

Q27. What comparison was missing?

A. The opening hours of the gallery

B. How well visitors remembered the material without symbols

C. The cost of renting the building

D. The number of artists who created the symbols

A30. To avoid evaluating the design only through people who paid attention to it.
