purpose・aim は導入目的、during the trial は試験運用で行ったこと、however・nevertheless・not measured は結論を制限する情報、will review・before expanding は今後の判断を表します。

A city library installed a new wireless network to provide more reliable internet access for visitors. The old network frequently disconnected when many people used it simultaneously. Staff first measured how long a sample of users could remain connected. During a four-week trial, the number of unexpected disconnections fell, but the library did not measure the speed of every device. In addition, some visitors could not find the new network name on their phones. The library therefore added printed instructions at the entrance and asked volunteers to provide assistance. Managers were pleased by the reduction in disconnections, yet they did not claim that every visitor now had equal access. They planned to review connection problems reported by people with older devices before deciding whether to remove the previous network.

A secondary school tested an electronic attendance system that allowed teachers to record who had entered each classroom. The aim was to reduce paperwork at the start of lessons. After a month, teachers reported spending less time copying names from paper lists. However, some students had forgotten their school cards, so the electronic record occasionally showed them as absent even when they were present. The school responded by allowing teachers to correct a record after confirming the student’s identity. It also limited access to attendance data to authorized staff. School managers said the trial had reduced one administrative task, but they emphasized that the system did not measure students’ learning or prove improved academic performance. They planned to compare error rates before deciding whether to expand the system.

A museum began using three-dimensional scans to record the shape of fragile objects. The scans allowed researchers to inspect digital models without repeatedly handling the originals. Some visitors assumed that the new system could automatically repair damaged objects. The conservators explained that this was not its purpose. A scan could reveal a change in shape, but identifying its cause and deciding how to repair the object still required specialist judgment. During the trial, researchers discovered that reflective surfaces were difficult to capture accurately. They changed the lighting and repeated several scans to improve the models. The museum plans to make selected digital models available for education while keeping the physical objects under controlled conditions. Staff caution that access to a digital copy does not mean the original can be touched freely.

A water supplier offered customers an optional service that sent alerts when their meters recorded unusual patterns. Engineers hoped the alerts would help residents notice possible leaks earlier. During a small trial, some customers discovered that an outdoor tap had been left running. Others received alerts caused by unusually high but legitimate water use, such as watering a garden during a hot week. The supplier explained that an alert indicated a pattern worth checking, not proof that a pipe was broken. Staff provided guidance on checking visible taps and contacting the service desk for further assistance. The company has not calculated how much water the service saves overall. It will examine false alarms and customer feedback before making the feature available more widely.

A community farm installed soil sensors in three small fields to learn when watering might be necessary. The sensors measured soil moisture at particular locations rather than the condition of every part of the farm. During a dry period, volunteers used the readings to postpone watering in one field where the soil was still sufficiently moist. They initially described the change as a promising way to reduce unnecessary water use. Later, however, a technician noticed that one sensor had been placed too close to a shaded area and might not represent the whole field. The volunteers moved it and began recording readings from additional points. The farm has not claimed that the system will increase crop yields. It wants to improve the reliability of the data before expanding the use of sensors.

Q21. What did the sensors measure?

A. Soil moisture at specific locations

B. Every plant’s future yield

C. All local weather patterns

D. The price of agricultural equipment

Q22. Why was one sensor moved?

A town tested an application that displayed predicted arrival times for local buses. The predictions used information from bus locations, but they were not guaranteed arrival times. Passengers who tried the app said they could decide more easily when to leave home. Nevertheless, some predictions became less accurate when a road was unexpectedly closed. The transport office revised the display to show a warning when major disruptions were reported. It also kept printed timetables at bus stops for residents who did not own suitable phones. The office counted app downloads, but it had not established whether waiting times for all passengers had fallen. Officials planned to compare predicted and actual arrivals over a longer period before extending the system to additional routes.
