What was the service designed to do?/観察:What did staff actually measure or observe?/制約:What has not been proved?/次の行動:What will happen before expansion?。
話者の主張と測定事実を混同した場合は、may・might・did not measure・not a guaranteeの表現を集中的に復習します。
A community hospital noticed that many visitors were asking staff for directions to outpatient departments. Administrators first considered installing additional electronic displays. Before buying them, however, the hospital conducted a trial with simpler printed signs. Volunteers observed how long it took visitors to locate two departments, but they did not record information about visitors’ medical conditions. During the trial, fewer visitors asked for directions at the main desk. This was encouraging, yet the administrators cautioned that the results did not show whether every visitor found the building easier to navigate. In particular, the trial did not include visitors who required assistance reading signs. The hospital therefore invited representatives of several accessibility groups to review the signs before deciding whether to expand the changes. Its final decision will consider cost, readability, and the needs of different visitors.
Q1. What was tested before purchasing electronic displays?
A. Printed signs
B. Automatic wheelchairs
C. A new parking system
D. An electronic appointment service

A public health office sends appointment letters to residents who have requested routine health checks. Staff found that some recipients misunderstood the location and preparation instructions. The office therefore tested letters containing the same information in several languages. The first versions were prepared by professional translators, and community volunteers were asked to review them for clarity. Although the wording was generally understandable, the volunteers identified a few expressions that could confuse readers about the appointment date. The office corrected those expressions before sending the revised letters. Officials reported that fewer recipients called to ask about dates during the following month. They did not claim that the new letters changed attendance rates, because they had not yet compared attendance data. The next stage is to assess whether the letters are easy to read on both paper and smartphones.

Q5. What did volunteers help improve?
A. The location of the office
B. The clarity of translated appointment letters
C. The prices of the health checks
D. The office’s medical equipment

A neighborhood pharmacy wanted customers to understand why some orders take longer to prepare than others. It installed a screen showing general estimates of waiting time, but staff avoided displaying names or individual prescription details. During the first two weeks, customers asked fewer questions about delays. Still, the pharmacy manager pointed out that the screen could only provide estimates, not guaranteed collection times. Some orders required additional checks, and a few customers had difficulty reading the display from the waiting area. The pharmacy changed the text size and added verbal announcements when needed. The manager says the screen should reduce uncertainty without replacing conversations between staff and customers. A later review will examine whether the information is accessible and whether the estimates are sufficiently accurate during busy periods.
Q9. What did the screen display?
A. Customers’ names and prescriptions
B. Guaranteed collection times
C. General estimates of waiting time
D. A list of confidential diagnoses
Q10. What is the manager’s view of the display?
A. It should supplement communication, not replace it
B. It eliminates all waiting
C. It makes additional checks unnecessary
D. It must show every customer’s details
A9. C。根拠:general estimates of waiting time。
A10. A。根拠:without replacing conversations between staff and customers。
A11. An estimate provides an approximate time, not a guaranteed collection time.
A secondary school compared two schedules for afternoon study sessions. Under one schedule, students worked for a longer uninterrupted period. Under the other, they took a short break midway through the session. Teachers recorded how many exercises students completed, but they did not formally measure long-term memory or mental health. Students using the second schedule finished slightly more exercises on average. However, the difference varied between classes, and the school could not determine whether breaks alone caused it. For example, some classes had different teachers and different assignment difficulty. The school decided to repeat the comparison with more consistent conditions before changing the timetable for all students. Administrators emphasized that one small observation was not enough to establish a general rule about the best study schedule.
Q13. What was directly measured?
A. Students’ mental health over several years
B. The number of exercises completed
C. Every student’s lifetime memory
D. Future examination results
Q14. Why could the school not establish that breaks caused the difference?
A. Students refused to take breaks
B. No exercises were completed
C. Teachers and assignment difficulty also differed
D. The school had already changed every timetable
A13. B。 Teachers recorded how many exercises students completed。
A14. C。根拠:different teachers and different assignment difficultyが交絡要因。
A community center created a map of walking routes to encourage residents to spend time outdoors. The map identified resting places, water fountains, and roads with little traffic. After the map was distributed, the number of downloads increased, and several residents said that the information helped them choose a route. Nevertheless, the organizers noted that downloads did not show how often people actually went walking. They also received comments that some routes lacked suitable resting places for older users. The center therefore planned to update the map and ask residents about their experiences after using it. Organizers did not present the project as a medical treatment or claim that the map had improved anyone’s health. Their immediate goal was to make route information more accessible and accurate.

A hospital tested an optional text-message reminder for people who had already booked appointments. The message displayed the date and general location, but it did not include sensitive details about the reason for the visit. During the pilot, some patients said that reminders made appointment information easier to find. However, others preferred letters or telephone calls. Staff also discovered that an outdated mobile number could prevent a message from reaching the intended person. The hospital therefore decided to keep several communication methods and ask patients which method they preferred. It planned to review delivery failures before any expansion. Administrators emphasized that the new system was a convenience feature, not a replacement for professional medical advice or a guarantee that nobody would miss an appointment.
Q21. What information did reminders contain?
A. A full diagnosis
B. The date and general location
C. The patient’s medical history
D. A guarantee of treatment
Q22. What did the hospital decide after the pilot?
A. Use only text messages
B. Remove letters and telephone calls
C. Guarantee zero missed appointments
D. Retain multiple contact methods and review failures
A21. B。根拠:date and general locationと明記。
A22. D。根拠:keep several communication methods and … review delivery failures。
