英検準1級の長文でcounterexample(反例)やexception(例外)が現れたとき、『全ての結論が間違っていた』と考えるのは誤りです。

Every visitor can use the audio guide. Most visitors can use the guide.

A community gardening group distributed the same variety of bean seeds to residents. An organizer predicted that every participant would obtain similar harvests because the seeds came from one supplier. However, the prediction had not been tested in different gardens. After two months, most participants reported healthy plants, but one gardener reported poor growth. Some people immediately concluded that the seeds were defective. A volunteer scientist challenged that conclusion. Although the single case showed that similar harvests could not be guaranteed for everyone, it did not explain why those particular plants had grown badly. Soil, sunlight, watering, and possible insect damage had not been measured consistently. The scientist advised participants to record their growing conditions. The group will compare these records over a longer period before blaming the supplier or drawing conclusions about the variety as a whole.

A public library introduced spoken directions on its website. A questionnaire shown to people who had used the feature returned mainly favorable answers, so some officials described it as useful for everyone. An accessibility adviser questioned that claim. One visitor could not play the audio on an older phone, while another preferred printed directions in a noisy environment. These examples did not prove that the feature lacked value. They did show that it was not suitable for every visitor. Moreover, the questionnaire had excluded people who could not open the audio at all. The library decided to keep printed directions available and to test the service on different devices. Staff will record failures as well as successful uses before making broader claims. The director explained that satisfaction among most respondents is evidence about those respondents, not proof that all visitors have equal access.

A town tested a delivery system that combined orders from several small shops. The organizers reported that average delivery time had fallen from fifty minutes to forty minutes during a six-week trial. They argued that the service had become more efficient and proposed expanding it. A closer review, however, found that several deliveries to the edge of the area had taken more than ninety minutes because the route passed through the center first. These cases did not invalidate the calculated average. They did challenge the stronger claim that every household received faster service. The organizers had measured delivery times but not whether the correct goods arrived or how much staff time was needed to coordinate the shops. Managers proposed adjusting routes and recording both averages and unusually long delays. They will review complaints and operating costs before deciding whether a larger service would be fair and practical.

Q21. What improved on average during the trial?

A. Delivery time decreased from fifty to forty minutes

B. All deliveries finished in forty minutes

C. Operating costs fell by forty percent

D. All shops became more profitable

Q22. What occurred at some homes near the edge of the area?

A. Deliveries were canceled

B. Deliveries took over ninety minutes

C. No orders were accepted

D. The route became shorter for everybody

Q23. Which claim do those unusual cases challenge?

A. A calculation of average time

B. The fact that a six-week trial occurred

C. A claim that every household benefited equally

D. The existence of the delivery company

Q24. Which item was NOT measured?

A. Delivery time

B. Examples of long delays

C. Average time across the trial

D. Whether customers received the correct goods

A21. A。根拠:average time fell 50 to 40, not every delivery。

A22. B。根拠:several deliveries more than 90 minutes。

A23. C。根拠:the universal every household claim, not average。

A29. Managers plan to adjust routes and monitor unusually long delays.

A30. Average delivery time fell, but some households experienced long delays and expansion needs further review.
