説明文1:How Schools Can Reduce Food Waste

School cafeterias produce food waste for several reasons. Some students take larger portions than they can finish, while others leave food because they do not have enough time to eat. When schools first try to solve the problem, they often assume that offering smaller meals is the only answer. However, waste can remain high even when portions are reduced.

One school began recording how much food was left after lunch and asking students why they had not finished it. The surveys showed that some students wanted smaller servings, but others were spending too much of their lunch break waiting in line. (18), the school introduced two changes: students could choose different portion sizes, and serving lines were reorganized to reduce waiting times.

The school also examined what happened to uneaten food. It considered donating some items, but food safety rules made this difficult. (19) simply sending all leftovers to a composting facility, the staff focused on preventing unnecessary waste in the first place. They ordered ingredients more carefully and checked which menus were regularly unpopular.

After three months, the recorded waste had decreased. The staff were pleased, but they did not claim that every change had been equally effective. They planned to compare results across different seasons (20) deciding whether the same system should be introduced in other schools.

説明文2:The Value of Community Translation Projects

Many communities publish notices about public services in several languages. Translating these notices can help people understand bus changes, health information, and emergency instructions. Yet producing a useful translation is not always as simple as replacing each word with a word in another language.

Community volunteers sometimes work with professional translators to check whether a translated notice is easy to understand. For instance, a literal translation may use technical expressions that are unfamiliar to readers. (21), volunteers who know the local community can suggest clearer wording, while professionals check whether the meaning has been preserved.

Such projects require careful management. If an announcement changes, an old translation may continue circulating online. (22), some organizations include the publication date and an update notice on every language version. They also keep a record of the person responsible for approving changes.

Supporters argue that the projects strengthen communication across communities. However, volunteers cannot be expected to replace qualified experts in every situation. Medical and legal documents may have serious consequences if translated inaccurately. For this reason, the most successful programs distinguish everyday notices from specialist material and seek professional support (23) the risks of misunderstanding are especially high.

長文1:E-mail|Changes to a Town History Exhibition

To: Student History Club Members

From: Daniel Reed, Town Museum Education Team

Subject: Exhibition preparation and volunteer schedule

Thank you for agreeing to help with our local history exhibition. We originally planned to display photographs and maps in the museum’s second-floor gallery. However, that gallery will be closed for electrical repairs from November 10 to November 24. The exhibition will instead open in the ground-floor hall on November 18 as planned.

The hall has less wall space, so we can display only twenty photographs at a time. Our education team will choose them, but student volunteers are invited to suggest themes for short captions. Please do not upload photographs to social media without permission from the people or organizations that own them. Permission to use an image in the exhibition does not automatically allow it to be shared online.

The training session for new volunteers will be held online on November 12, from 6:00 to 6:45 p.m. Experienced volunteers may attend if they wish, but they are not required to do so. Everyone who works with visitors must read the updated safety instructions before the first day. We will email those instructions and the video of the training session afterward.

If you want to change your assigned work shift, please contact us by November 8. We cannot guarantee changes requested after that date, as we must prepare name cards and entrance passes in advance. Thank you for helping us explain the town’s history accurately and respectfully.

問24

長文2:Explanatory article|Can Shared Workspaces Help Rural Towns?

Small towns have increasingly considered opening shared workspaces in unused public buildings. Residents can reserve desks, use reliable internet connections, and attend occasional training sessions. Local governments hope that these facilities will help people who work remotely and reduce the need for long journeys to large cities.

One advantage is that residents may be able to find professional opportunities without moving away. A graphic designer, for example, could communicate with clients online while continuing to live near family. Shared offices may also support new businesses by allowing people to use meeting rooms without renting an entire office. In some towns, these spaces have even become places where people from different fields exchange ideas.

However, the projects involve significant costs. Buildings need heating, security, internet equipment, and maintenance. Some towns underestimate these costs because the original buildings are already owned by the government. Researchers warn that an empty building is not necessarily cheap to operate. A workspace with many desks but few regular users may consume funds that could support other public services.

To avoid this problem, several towns have started with temporary trial programs. They survey residents about working hours, transport access, and the equipment they need. Some facilities close earlier on days with low demand instead of remaining open all evening. Others share meeting rooms with local community groups to make better use of the space.

Early reports suggest that success depends on more than attracting a large number of visitors during an opening event. Long-term use, affordability, and whether people can genuinely work there matter more. A town that tracks these measures can decide whether to expand the program, change it, or end it. In this way, shared workspaces may become useful local facilities, but they should not be treated as an automatic solution to population decline.

問28

What is one possible benefit of shared workspaces?

  1. They remove the need for internet access.
  2. They guarantee that every town will gain residents.
  3. They allow remote workers to stay in their communities.
  4. They prevent people from meeting colleagues online.

C:They allow remote workers to stay in their communities.。without moving away/continuing to live near family

What do researchers warn about?

  1. Government-owned buildings can still be expensive to run.
  2. Meeting rooms are unnecessary for new businesses.
  3. Training sessions should never be held in public buildings.
  4. Remote workers always need to commute to cities.

Some museums are creating online collections so that people can explore historical objects and photographs without visiting in person. Supporters say these digital collections can help students who live far away and allow researchers to examine materials from different regions. They can also protect fragile objects by reducing the number of times the originals need to be handled.

Digital collections are not simple to produce, however. High-quality photographs require specialized equipment, and staff must record accurate information about each object. In addition, museums need permission before publishing certain images online. An image that can be shown inside a museum may not always be shared freely on the internet.

To manage these challenges, some museums begin with a small selection of materials and add more gradually. They work with specialists to check descriptions and provide clear information about how images may be used. The goal is to improve public access while respecting the people and organizations connected to the collections.

Some museums share collections online, allowing distant students and researchers to access historical materials while reducing handling of fragile objects. However, digitization requires equipment, accurate descriptions, and permission for certain images. Museums therefore often start small, check information with specialists, and explain how online images may be used.

Writing|

TOPIC: Do you think local governments should invest more money in public spaces for young people?

I think local governments should invest more money in public spaces for young people. First, safe places to study and meet friends can improve students’ daily lives. For example, a community center with desks and reliable internet may help teenagers who cannot concentrate at home. Second, public spaces can create opportunities to learn new skills. Students could join workshops on art, technology, or environmental activities and discover interests beyond school subjects. Of course, governments should consider maintenance costs and ask residents which facilities they actually need. With careful planning, these spaces can benefit both young people and their communities.
