1|Why Small Weather Stations Matter

Large weather agencies collect information from many locations, but their measuring stations are sometimes far from individual neighborhoods. This can matter in cities where temperatures differ between parks, open roads, and areas filled with buildings. Some schools have therefore begun operating small weather stations that record temperature, rainfall, and wind conditions near their campuses.

These projects help students understand how scientific information is collected. The students learn to read measuring instruments and organize results over time. (18), their records may show how the local environment changes throughout the year. However, a short series of measurements cannot automatically explain a long-term climate trend.

Teachers also remind students that instruments must be placed carefully. A thermometer positioned in direct sunlight may show a different reading from one in the shade. (19), groups try to use consistent locations and methods whenever they compare results. Without these controls, students may mistake a change in measurement conditions for an actual change in the weather.

The information can support classroom discussions, but the school does not use the project to replace official weather warnings. Staff explain that small instruments may fail or provide incomplete data. Students are encouraged to compare their observations with official sources (20) drawing conclusions about unusual weather events.

長文2|Designing Parks for Different Ages

Public parks are used by children, adults, and older residents, yet these groups sometimes want different things. Children may enjoy active play areas, while others prefer quiet paths or places to rest. When a city renovates a park, choosing equipment based only on the loudest requests can leave some residents’ needs unmet.

One city invited families, students, and older people to describe what they wanted from a local park. The discussions revealed several common concerns, including shade, safe walking routes, and places to sit. (21), the city decided to start with improvements that could benefit several groups rather than install one expensive attraction.

However, creating an inclusive park is not just a matter of adding more objects. A new bench may be unusable if people cannot reach it easily, and a play area may be uncomfortable without protection from the summer sun. (22), designers studied how different users moved through the space before selecting final locations for equipment.

The city also considered maintenance. Facilities need cleaning and repairs, and poorly maintained paths can become dangerous. Officials planned to monitor use after the renovation and make adjustments when necessary. Their goal was to create a place that remains useful (23) residents’ needs change over time.

1|E-mail|Volunteer Training for the River Festival

To: Festival Volunteers

From: Anna Green, River Festival Office

Subject: Updated meeting times and safety arrangements

Thank you for signing up to help at this year’s River Festival on September 20. The program will take place beside the town’s new pedestrian bridge. Although the festival officially opens at 10:30 a.m., all volunteers should report to the information desk by 9:45 so that staff can check attendance and give out identification cards.

Some activities have been changed since we sent the first schedule. The boat demonstration will now start at 1:00 p.m. instead of 12:30 because the safety inspection is taking longer than expected. The children’s painting workshop will begin at 11:00 as planned. Visitors may watch the boat demonstration from the riverbank, but only trained staff are allowed onto the boats.

Every volunteer must complete a short safety checklist before working near the water. Those who helped last year do not need to repeat the online introduction, but they must still read the latest emergency information. The checklist and emergency instructions are available from the volunteer page.

If you need to change your assigned shift, please email us by September 14. After that date, we may be unable to make changes because we have to arrange team leaders and safety equipment. A copy of the final schedule will be sent on September 16. We appreciate your help in keeping the event enjoyable and safe.

長文2|Article|The Problem With Discarded Electronic Devices

Phones, tablets, and computers have become important tools for communication and education. As technology changes, many people replace their devices even when the old ones still function. These discarded products create a difficult problem because they contain valuable materials as well as substances that can damage the environment if handled improperly.

Some communities collect unwanted electronics so that useful materials can be recovered. Recycling can reduce the need to obtain certain raw materials from new sources. However, recycling electronic devices is often complicated. Different components require different treatment, and the process can be expensive. People may also worry about personal information remaining on devices they have used for years.

To address these issues, some local governments provide clear instructions for deleting personal data and offer collection points managed by approved organizations. Schools have begun teaching students how to check whether equipment can be repaired or donated before deciding to recycle it. For example, a tablet with an old battery may still be useful after a safe replacement, while a completely damaged device may need specialized recycling.

Environmental researchers emphasize that recycling is only one part of the solution. Extending the useful life of equipment can also reduce waste, but repairs need to be safe and affordable. Keeping every old device forever is not helpful either, since stored products may never be reused. The goal is to make informed decisions based on the condition of each item.

Programs are more likely to work when people understand where to take products, what will happen to them, and how their personal information is protected. For this reason, simply placing collection boxes around a town may not be enough. Good information, trustworthy processing, and opportunities for repair are also important.

問28

Why are discarded electronic devices difficult to manage?

Some cities have created public bicycle-sharing programs to help residents make short trips without using cars. These programs allow people to borrow bicycles from one location and return them at another. Supporters argue that they can reduce traffic and provide an affordable way to reach stations, shops, and workplaces.

However, the bicycles need regular maintenance, and some stations become crowded while others run out of available bicycles. The programs may also be difficult for people who do not use smartphones, depending on how reservations and payments are organized. As a result, simply adding more bicycles does not necessarily improve the service.

To solve these problems, some operators move bicycles between stations at busy times and provide alternative ways to register. They also monitor repair costs and how often bicycles are actually used. City officials then review whether the program meets local needs before deciding to expand it.

Public bicycle-sharing programs can offer affordable transport for short trips and may reduce traffic. However, maintenance costs, uneven bicycle availability, and smartphone-based systems create difficulties. Operators can improve services by moving bicycles between stations, offering alternative registration methods, and monitoring usage before deciding whether to expand.

Writing Part 5|

TOPIC:Do you think schools should give students more opportunities to learn about local history?

I think schools should give students more opportunities to learn about local history. First, local stories help students understand how their communities have changed. For example, studying old photographs and maps can show why a neighborhood developed around a station or river. Second, such projects encourage communication between generations. Students could interview older residents and compare their memories with written records. Teachers should also explain how to check sources carefully, because memories are not always accurate. These activities can connect history lessons to real places and make students more interested in protecting their community’s cultural heritage.
