Ryo was preparing a short English presentation about a place he wanted to visit. He chose an island that was famous for its beautiful birds.

At first, Ryo wrote every sentence on six cards. He practiced reading the cards many times. When he showed the presentation to his friend Nao, she said that the ideas were interesting but it was difficult to see the pictures because he kept looking down.

Nao suggested writing only the main words on one card and practicing without reading every sentence. Ryo was nervous because he sometimes forgot difficult words. Nao said, "Use easier words to explain the same ideas. You can still tell a good story."

The next day, Ryo tried again. He looked at his classmates and explained how the birds found food and protected their young. He forgot the name of one bird, but he described its color and shape instead.

After the presentation, the teacher praised Ryo for explaining clearly and answering a question. Ryo learned that being able to communicate was more important than saying every word exactly as he had written it.

A group of students wanted to learn how much electricity their classroom lights used. They asked their teacher if they could record the times when lights were left on in an empty classroom.

In the first week, they found that the lights were on without anyone in the room for a total of ninety minutes. They placed a reminder by the door and asked the last person to leave to check the lights.

In the second week, they recorded only thirty minutes. The students were pleased, but their teacher told them to be careful about the conclusion. During the second week, several classes had been held in other rooms, so the classroom was used less often. That may have affected the numbers.

The group decided to collect information for four more weeks. They would record not only how long the lights stayed on, but also how many hours students used the classroom.

They planned to compare the numbers carefully before asking the whole school to follow the same rule.

Q25. What were the students studying? A. How fast computers worked. / B. The price of lunch. / C. How long lights stayed on in an empty classroom. / D. How many students used trains.

Q26. What was the first week’s total? A. 30 minutes. / B. 60 minutes. / C. 120 minutes. / D. 90 minutes.

Q27. What action did students take? A. Put a reminder by the door. / B. Buy new lights. / C. Close the school. / D. Remove the windows.

Q28. What was the second week’s total? A. 90 minutes. / B. 30 minutes. / C. 45 minutes. / D. 120 minutes.

Q29. Why did the teacher advise caution? A. The students could not count. / B. No one had used the classroom. / C. Classroom use was lower in Week 2. / D. The lights were broken.

Q30. How many more weeks would they collect data? A. One. / B. Two. / C. Three. / D. Four.

Q31. What new information would they also record? A. Hours the classroom was used. / B. The color of the walls. / C. The age of the teacher. / D. Names of students arriving late.
