NEW TREASURE Stage4 Read

A small school in a coastal town wanted to improve the way it shared emergency information. Its old system relied on announcements from loudspeakers, but several families said that they could not always hear the messages clearly. A student committee suggested sending short messages to phones as well. Some teachers welcomed the proposal because written notices could be checked again later. Others worried that not every family had the same access to a phone during an emergency.
The committee conducted a two-week trial using fictional practice alerts, not real emergencies. It asked participants whether they had received each alert and whether the instructions were clear. Most participants reported receiving at least one message, but a smaller group missed both kinds of notification. The students also learned that a long message could be difficult to understand when people were anxious.
In its report, the committee recommended using several methods together and keeping instructions brief. It did not claim that phone messages alone would solve every problem. The students concluded that an effective warning system should reach different groups of people and allow important information to be checked quickly.
設問|問1〜9
- 問1:What problem did some families report?
- 問2:Why did some teachers support phone messages?
- 問3:What concern did other teachers raise?
- 問4:Were the messages used during real emergencies?

第2長文|オンライン国際交流の利点と限界
これは交流事業の宣伝ではありません。学習機会の利点を認めながら、時間差・発言量の偏り・成果測定の難しさを扱う練習文です。「生徒が自信を得た」と「成績が上がった」は異なる情報です。
Students at two schools in different countries began meeting online once a month. During the first few meetings, they discussed food, sports, and ordinary school life. Some students felt nervous because they could not immediately find the right English words. However, the teachers encouraged them to ask follow-up questions rather than memorize long speeches. After several meetings, the students became better at responding to unexpected answers.
The program also had limitations. Connections sometimes failed, and the time difference made it difficult to choose a convenient hour. Furthermore, students who spoke confidently often dominated the conversation, while quieter students had fewer opportunities. The teachers introduced small discussion groups and asked each participant to prepare one question and one short opinion.
At the end of the term, students said they had gained confidence, but the teachers did not treat these comments as proof of improved test scores. Instead, they collected short recordings and compared how well students explained their ideas before and after the program. Their conclusion was cautious: online exchanges could create valuable opportunities to communicate, provided that the sessions were designed so that every student could participate.

第3長文|失敗した試作品から学ぶデザイン
物語風の文章でも、論理は「失敗→原因仮説→3つの代替案→条件比較→結論」と展開します。結果だけでなく、比較方法と制約を読み取ってください。
A student design club decided to build a simple device that would help people carry heavy books across the school building. Its first model was light and inexpensive, but it tipped over when users turned quickly. Some club members wanted to abandon the idea. Others argued that the failure had revealed a useful problem: the wheels were too close together to keep the device stable.
The group drew three new designs. One used a wider base, another used larger wheels, and the third reduced the number of books that could be carried. Students tested each design under similar conditions and recorded how often the device remained stable. The wider base performed best in the trial, although it required more material. The team therefore had to balance safety against cost and weight.
When presenting their results, the students explained not only which design they preferred but also why they had rejected the other two. Their teacher praised the careful comparison, not merely the final device. The club learned that a useful design process involves identifying a problem, testing alternatives, and explaining the trade-offs rather than simply choosing the cheapest option.
設問|問19〜27
- 問19:What was the main weakness of the first model?
- 問20:What did some members learn from the failure?
- 問21:How many alternative designs were tested?
- 問22:Which version performed best during the trial?
- 問23:What disadvantage did the better design have?
- 問24:Does the text say the best design was also the cheapest?
- 問25:What did the teacher praise?
- 問26:The phrase trade-offs most nearly means what here?
- 問27:Summarize the paragraph in one sentence within 27 words.
解答・根拠|問19〜27
- 答19:It tipped over when users turned quickly. 転倒する安全上の問題。
- 答20:The wheels might be too close together for stability. 原因仮説を得た。
- 答21:Three. 幅広の台・大きな車輪・冊数制限。
- 答22:The wider-base design. 安定性の観点で最良。
- 答23:It required more material. 安全と費用・重量のトレードオフ。

- 答26:A balance between competing benefits and costs. 一方を優先すると他方に制約がある関係。
- 答27:例:After an unstable prototype failed, students tested three designs and learned that safe products require comparing alternatives and accepting trade-offs. 対比と結論を簡潔に。
第4長文|地域の物語を別の言語で伝える
学校の和訳問題とは異なり、読み手・文脈・情報量の設計が問われます。二者択一ではなく短い展示キャプションと別冊の説明を組み合わせた点が結論です。
A group of teenagers began collecting stories about everyday life in their town. They interviewed older residents about local shops, festivals, and changes in transportation. Their plan was to create a small exhibition with both Japanese and English captions so that visitors from different backgrounds could learn about the area.
At first, the students translated every sentence word for word. They soon discovered that certain expressions sounded natural in Japanese but confusing in English. A local expression could contain a meaning that had no short equivalent in another language. Instead of replacing every unfamiliar phrase with a simple English word, the students began adding short explanations and photographs.
Some members worried that simplifying the captions would remove important details. Others argued that long captions would discourage visitors from reading. After testing two versions, the team chose shorter main captions and offered additional information through a separate booklet. Their final report suggested that translation was not merely a matter of finding matching words. Good communication also required decisions about context, audience, and how much detail people could reasonably process.
設問|問28〜36
- 問28:Who did the teenagers interview?
- 問29:Why did they prepare Japanese and English captions?
- 問30:What problem arose with word-for-word translation?
- 問31:How did students handle local expressions with no short equivalent?
- 問32:What were the two competing concerns about caption length?
- 問33:What solution did the team finally choose?
- 問34:In this text, audience means what?
- 問35:Is the text’s conclusion that every translation should be as short as possible?
- 問36:Summarize the final message in one English sentence within 26 words.
解答・根拠|問28〜36
- 答28:Older residents in their town. 日常生活の記録のため。
- 答29:To help visitors from different backgrounds understand the area. 対象者を広げる目的。
- 答30:Some expressions became confusing or unnatural in English. 逐語訳の限界。
- 答31:They added explanations and photographs. 意味と背景の補足。
- 答32:Short captions might omit details; long captions might discourage reading. 情報量と読みやすさ。
- 答33:Short main captions plus a separate booklet with more detail. 二層構造。
- 答34:The intended readers or visitors. 聴衆だけでなく読み手。
- 答35:No. It emphasizes adapting context and details to readers. 短さだけを絶対化しない。
- 答36:例:A bilingual exhibition taught students that effective translation requires cultural explanations and careful choices about how much information visitors can read.
