Do you know where does she live? I wonder if it will rain.
| if/whether名詞節 | whether the plan worked | 〜かどうか |
| It … that | It is important that …
| Where does she live? | I know where she lives.
| When did they leave? | I wonder when they left.
| What caused the delay? | We asked what caused the delay.
| How did people travel? | They asked how people had travelled. |
名詞節if/whetherと条件節ifを区別
| I don’t know if she can come.
| We asked whether the data were reliable. |
| If she can come, we will begin. |
| Whether it succeeds remains unclear. |
Whether we can finish is unclear.
It is important that the records be checked.
| It is clear that the result is uncertain.
| It is important that the sources be checked.
| It seems that the train is late. |
What mattered …
What mattered to the team was accurate evidence. What mattered to the teamという名詞節です。
- where/what/whether/if/thatのどこから節が始まるかを確認。
At a regional museum, students wanted to know why several photographs had no dates. What surprised them was that some labels were based on earlier guesses rather than confirmed records. The curator explained that a photograph alone could not always establish its year. It was important that the museum distinguish verified information from uncertain descriptions. Students asked whether local historians could examine the original letters. If new evidence appeared, the museum would update the captions and keep a record of each change. The students also asked, “When were these photographs taken?” Instead of inventing an answer, the curator explained what researchers still needed to find out. The class learned that an attractive explanation is not necessarily a reliable one. Even when translations are available, readers should check whether the dates and names have documentary support.

After a town introduced shared bicycles, residents asked whether the service had reduced short car journeys. What the officials knew was that bicycles were borrowed frequently near the railway station. They did not yet know how many users would otherwise have travelled by car. It was clear that rental counts alone could not answer the environmental question. The planning team wanted to know where bicycles were unavailable at busy times and why some stations remained full. If usage patterns changed, workers would move bicycles to different locations. Before deciding to expand the network, officials asked whether a new survey could identify travellers’ previous choices. A student asked, “How did people travel before this service existed?” The officials promised to investigate rather than assume an answer. The project showed that an increase in recorded activity is different from evidence of a broader social effect.

In a school science project, students noticed that plants near a sunny window had grown taller. They asked whether sunlight had caused the difference. What the group had failed to control was the amount of water given to each plant. Their teacher explained that a larger plant was not enough to prove a single cause. It was necessary that the class measure water more consistently in its next trial. The students wanted to know how they could compare the two groups fairly. If different amounts of water were used again, the results would remain difficult to interpret. One student asked, “Why did the first group grow faster?” The teacher replied that this question remained open until other conditions were checked. After repeating the experiment, the class planned to record not only the measurements but also what the observations could not demonstrate.

At a school speech contest, teachers discussed whether difficult vocabulary should receive extra credit. What mattered most to the judging team was how clearly speakers presented claims and supporting reasons. Some students wondered why a fluent speech could still lack convincing evidence. It was important that the evaluation criteria be explained before presentations began. If a speaker used a complicated word incorrectly, judges would consider whether the intended meaning was understandable. Teachers asked students to check what each example actually supported instead of adding impressive facts without sources. One participant asked, “What makes a speech convincing?” The judges answered that clear reasoning and accurate evidence usually mattered more than unusual vocabulary. The contest therefore included a short question period so that speakers could explain their ideas. The school planned to review whether the new rubric helped beginners understand their progress.

- 11. The team wanted to know where bicycles were unavailable and why other stations remained full.
- 12. Officials considered whether surveys could reveal previous transport choices.
- 13. Workers will relocate bicycles if demand patterns change.
- 14. It was clear that rental counts alone could not prove the effect on car travel.
- 15. What the officials knew was that bicycle borrowing near the station was frequent.
- 16. Officials had not measured how many riders otherwise would have used cars.
- 17. The student asked how people had travelled before the service existed.
