NEW TREASURE Third Edition Stage3 Lesson7は「関係副詞」です。Stage2で学ぶ関係代名詞の主格・目的格を復習しながら、where（場所）・when（時）・why（理由）・前置詞＋関係代名詞・非制限用法の関係副詞を学びます。the library where we studiedとthe library which we visitedでは文中の役割が異なり、in whereと書くなど前置詞を二重に使ってしまうと、英作文の失点につながります。

whereは場所の情報を含む関係副詞

the room where I studyのwhereには「in the room」の場所情報が含まれています。the room where I study inとするとinが重複するので、関係副詞を使う際は動詞と前置詞の元の関係を確認しましょう。
whenは時、whyは理由を説明する

the reason why …は理由を述べる基本表現です。The reason she left …のようにwhyが省略される場合もあります。the reason because she left …と機械的に言い換えず、学校のLessonで学ぶ標準的な形を先に確認します。
関係代名詞＋前置詞への言い換え

前置詞の後にはwhich／whomなどが使えます。in whereとせずin whichとします。the person to whom I spokeのように、人物に向けた前置詞を伴うフォーマルな表現もあります。
whichとwhereの違いは節内の役割
This is the museum which I visited.では、I visitedの目的語が不足しているためwhichがそれを受けます。This is the museum where I worked.では、I workedの目的語は不足せず、どこで働いたかという場所の情報が必要です。先行詞がmuseumだからどちらも同じというわけではありません。
- which／that：関係節の主語または目的語に相当する。
- where／when／why：場所・時間・理由の副詞的情報を補う。
- I visited the museum.ならthe museum which I visited。
- I worked at the museum.ならthe museum where I worked。
コンマ付き非制限用法は追加情報を示す
We visited Kyoto, where we stayed for two nights.は、Kyotoについて「そこで2泊した」という説明を追加します。The seminar is in November, when many events take place.はNovemberという時期についての補足です。非制限用法でwhere・whenを使っても、主節の中心はそのまま残ることがポイントです。
学校英語・英検長文での読み方
Stage3の長文では、「場所を特定する関係副詞」と「背景として付け加えた関係副詞」を見分けます。例えばThe city where the museum stands attracts visitors.なら、where以下がどのcityかを特定します。一方The city, where the museum opened last year, attracts visitors.なら、既に分かっているcityへの補足情報を付け加えています。

領域1｜where｜場所を説明する関係副詞（問1〜6）
- 問1：This is the town (where / when) my grandmother lives.
- 問2：The library (where / which) we studied has been rebuilt. 「そこで勉強した」という意味なら。
- 問3：I visited the school (where / why) my father used to teach.
- 問4：This is the café (where / when) we first met.
- 問5：The museum (where / whose) the event was held is near the station.
- 問6：I found the park. We played there as children. をwhereで一文に。
領域2｜when｜時・日付を説明する関係副詞（問7〜12）
