The Photograph with an Uncertain Date|
Paragraph 1
When the students of Riverside High School began preparing a small exhibition about their town’s former community hall, they assumed that their task would be simple. The hall had opened in 1958 and closed in 2014, and several boxes of photographs and newsletters had been donated to the school library. Their teacher asked them to select ten items and explain what each showed. Yet the first box contained photographs without dates, and the second held newspaper cuttings whose titles had been removed. The students quickly discovered that making an attractive display was easier than knowing exactly what had happened. They decided to keep a record of each claim and the source that supported it.
Paragraph 2
One photograph seemed particularly important. It showed a newly painted entrance beneath a sign that read “Community Hall,” and someone had written “1984” in blue ink on the back. A student was ready to print that year on the display label. Another student, however, found a newsletter announcing that the entrance renovation had been completed in June 1986. The two pieces of information did not fit easily together. Perhaps the photograph had been taken before the renovation; perhaps the handwritten date belonged to a different event; or perhaps the newsletter referred to a later stage of construction. The students knew that they needed more evidence before choosing one explanation.
Paragraph 3
The group interviewed a former volunteer who remembered helping to move books into the hall during a rainy autumn. She believed this had happened in 1985. Rather than correcting her immediately, the students asked what she remembered about the building at that time. She recalled carrying boxes through a side door while the main entrance was closed. Her memory might describe preparation for the renovation, not its completion. The students also learned that the interview had been recorded with permission for use in their school exhibition, but that permission did not include publication on the open internet. A memory could be valuable without being a precise calendar.
Paragraph 4
The students next visited a local archive. There they found a 1987 report describing how the renovated entrance had made wheelchair access easier. The report included a diagram, but no photograph of the entrance. It supported the idea that a renovation had taken place by 1987, although it did not identify the date of their photograph. The group chose to label the photograph “Entrance to the former community hall; date uncertain” instead of “Entrance, 1984.” They placed a short note beside it explaining that a handwritten date and a later newsletter required further checking. This label was less dramatic, but it described what the evidence actually allowed them to say.

Paragraph 5
While preparing the exhibition, the class asked sixty students to answer a short questionnaire about what visitors might find useful. Thirty-six students responded. Twenty-one of the respondents preferred personal stories, while fifteen preferred a clear timeline of verified events. Some members of the group argued that the results proved that most students wanted stories. Their teacher pointed out that twenty-one of thirty-six was a majority of respondents, not necessarily a majority of the sixty invited students or the whole school. Furthermore, choosing a favorite type of display did not measure how accurately visitors would learn the history. The class decided to offer both a timeline and carefully labeled interview excerpts.
Paragraph 6
A different problem appeared when the team considered publishing the exhibition online. The school had permission to display the archive’s photographs inside the library, but this agreement did not mention online distribution. One student suggested that posting a smaller image would be harmless. Another replied that reducing an image’s size did not automatically change the scope of the permission. The team contacted the archive and waited for a separate answer about online use. They prepared the website with text descriptions in the meantime, leaving the uncertain images unpublished. The decision delayed the launch, but it allowed the students to avoid treating silence as approval.
Paragraph 7
When the exhibition finally opened, some visitors asked why the students had not simply selected the oldest handwritten date. A student explained that documents are not equally reliable for every question. A dated newsletter can support when an announcement was printed, while a memory can help explain what a place felt like to someone who used it. Neither source automatically answers every question. A photograph may show what a building looked like, but the image alone may not identify the precise day it was taken. The students added a small card titled “What we know and what we are still checking,” inviting visitors to share other records.
Paragraph 8
At the end of the project, the students had learned more than the dates of a building’s history. They had learned that careful explanation can be more honest than a confident sentence with weak evidence. They had also learned that preserving someone’s words involves responsibilities about consent and context. A useful exhibition does not need to pretend that every question has been settled. It can show readers why a question remains open and what evidence would help answer it. The teacher asked the class to write a final reflection about one claim they had changed after checking a source. Most students chose the photograph’s date, not because uncertainty was exciting, but because they had discovered how easily an unsupported detail can become a repeated fact.
Paragraph 1|
解答1: The town’s former community hall.
解説:opened in 1958。
解説:closed in 2014。
5: Some photographs lacked dates and newspaper cuttings lacked titles.
Paragraph 2|
8: Their dates did not fit easily together.
解答10: Find more evidence.
Paragraph 3|
解答12: Through a side door.
13: It may concern preparation rather than completion.
14: Use in the school exhibition.
15: They wanted more details about what she remembered.
Paragraph 4|
17: Easier wheelchair access at the renovated entrance.
19: The date of the photograph.
20: Entrance to the former community hall; date uncertain.
Paragraph 5|
25: Use both a timeline and carefully labeled interview excerpts.
Paragraph 6|
解答26: Display inside the school library.
29: Text descriptions without the uncertain images.
解答30: Treating silence as approval.
Paragraph 7|
31: Why the students did not simply use the handwritten date.
32: When an announcement was printed.
33: How a user experienced the place.
34: The precise day the photograph was taken.
35: What we know and what we are still checking.
Paragraph 8|
36: The importance of evidence, careful explanation, consent and context.
37: A careful explanation based on evidence.
39: The date of the photograph.
40: Responsible historical writing distinguishes supported facts from uncertain details and respects permission to publish sources.
① was written(書かれていた)とwas taken(撮影された)は別です。
