The Last Page of the School Newspaper

Part 1|

On Monday morning, Hina found a folded note beneath the door of the school newspaper office. In thick blue ink, someone had written, “The music room is closing. Why is nobody reporting it?” The newspaper’s final issue of the term had to be sent to the printer by Thursday evening. Hina, its editor, was responsible for choosing the front-page story. Her friend Ryota, who played the drums, read the note and immediately began planning an article about the end of music at Northlake High. “If we wait,” he said, “there may be nothing left to save.” Hina understood his fear. The room was where the orchestra rehearsed and where students who did not belong to any club sometimes played the piano during lunch. Yet she also knew that a sentence written by an unknown person was not proof. She put the note in a folder rather than on the front page, and asked Ryota to find an official document before interviewing anyone.

Part 2|

The official notice was shorter than Ryota expected. It said that the school administration would “review the use of the music room next term” because several rooms needed maintenance. It did not use the word “close,” and it did not set a date for ending music activities. Ryota read the sentence twice. “They could still be planning to close it,” he argued. “Yes,” Hina replied, “but possible is not the same as decided.” They agreed to ask the office what “review” meant in this context. The secretary explained that the administration would examine room bookings, repair needs and the availability of other practice spaces. She could not speak for the principal about a final decision because no such decision had been announced. Hina wrote down her words carefully. Ryota was disappointed that the answer was less dramatic than the note, but he understood that leaving the uncertainty out of the article would mislead readers.

Part 3|

On Tuesday, Ryota obtained a table showing that the music room had been booked forty times in the previous term but only thirty times in the current one. He calculated a twenty-five-percent decrease and wanted to put the number in a large headline. Hina checked the footnote beneath the table. During the current term, part of the room had been closed for repairs for three weeks. Bookings recorded through the new online system also excluded lunchtime visits that did not require reservations. Neither figure counted the number of different students who entered the room. “The drop is real in the booking records,” Hina said, “but we cannot automatically say that interest in music fell by twenty-five percent.” Ryota disliked the qualification at first. Numbers looked authoritative on a printed page. Yet the more he examined the table, the less confident he became about the claim that its figures told the whole story.

Part 4|

The music teacher, Ms. Sato, met the two reporters in the corridor that afternoon. She admitted that the room needed work: a window leaked during heavy rain, and the ventilation system was unreliable. She wanted those problems fixed, not hidden. “A room can be important and still need repairs,” she said. She also explained that the orchestra was preparing for a concert in six weeks, and moving rehearsals would create difficulties. Ryota asked whether the concert had already been canceled. Ms. Sato looked surprised. No cancellation had been announced; the students were still rehearsing. She offered to share the schedule that had been confirmed, but asked the reporters not to describe tentative arrangements as final decisions. Hina noticed how often people used the same words—review, repair, move—as if they meant exactly the same thing. She began to suspect that the newspaper’s most useful task would be to explain their differences.

Part 5|

At lunch, a violinist named Mika asked Hina not to quote her by name. Mika loved the music room, but she had received angry messages after an earlier school discussion in which a short comment of hers had been repeated without its context. Hina initially thought that Mika was frightened of the administration. That was not what Mika meant. “I am afraid of being turned into a symbol,” she explained. “I can care about the room and still think the window needs fixing.” She agreed to explain the problem without being identified, provided that Hina preserved the meaning of her words. Hina accepted the condition. Ryota later suggested using a photograph of Mika practicing, but Hina reminded him that consent to be interviewed anonymously was not permission to publish a recognizable photograph. For the first time, Ryota considered how a story intended to protect a place could harm a person.

Part 6|

On Wednesday, the music room door was locked when Ryota arrived with his camera. He photographed the handle and sent Hina a message: “They have already shut it!” The photograph seemed to support his suspicion until Hina visited the corridor herself. A small notice beside the door stated, “Closed today, 2:00–4:00 p.m., for fire-alarm inspection.” Ryota had taken his picture at 2:30, and his frame had cut off the sign. The door reopened as scheduled at four. Ryota insisted that he had not deliberately hidden the notice. Hina believed him, but explained that an unintentional omission could still mislead readers. They kept the photograph as an example of why an image needs context, not as evidence that the room had been permanently closed. Ryota was embarrassed. He had wanted to be the first person to reveal the truth, yet he had almost helped create a false impression.

Part 7|

By Thursday afternoon, the newspaper team had only a few hours left. Ryota proposed the headline “Music Room to Close,” arguing that a strong headline might persuade the administration to protect the space. Hina placed the official notice, the booking table and the interview notes on her desk. None supported the claim that a closure had been decided. She wrote a different headline: “Music Room Use Under Review; Students Ask for Clear Answers.” Ryota accused her of making the story sound weak. Hina did not answer immediately. She read Mika’s request for anonymity again and thought about the photograph of the locked door. “A headline can motivate people,” she finally said, “but it should not ask them to believe something we have not established.” Ryota stared at the printed proof for a long time. Then he suggested adding a box explaining which facts were confirmed and which questions were still open. Hina agreed. Their disagreement had improved the article instead of ending their collaboration.

Part 8|

The paper came out on Friday. Some readers were relieved to learn that no closure had been announced; others said the headline was too cautious. A few students sent thank-you messages for explaining the booking numbers, but one online comment insisted that a twenty-five-percent decline in reservations proved that the room was no longer needed. Hina replied with the footnote about repairs and unrecorded lunchtime visits, without claiming that the opposite conclusion had been proved. The principal later announced an open meeting for the following Wednesday. He said that possible changes to room bookings would be discussed, but that no timetable had been approved. Several students misread the meeting announcement as a promise to keep the room open forever. Hina added a brief clarification to the newspaper website. She was beginning to understand that publication did not end the task of explaining. New information and new misunderstandings would continue to appear.

Part 9|

At the Wednesday meeting, the principal proposed a two-month trial of a new online booking system. Under the proposal, students could reserve the music room for longer blocks on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and some club practices might move temporarily to another room during repairs. The plan was not identical to closing the music room. Nor had it been approved in every detail. Ms. Sato asked how students without easy access to the portal could book a session. Mika, speaking without giving her name to the newspaper, asked whether the school would preserve some lunchtime access for students who belonged to no club. These questions were written into the meeting record. Ryota, who had expected a dramatic confrontation, was surprised by the patient discussion of practical arrangements. Afterward he admitted to Hina that he had confused his fear of losing the room with evidence that it would disappear. Hina said that his concern had nevertheless helped the newspaper ask an important question.

Part 10|

A month later, the final timetable was still being prepared, and the school newspaper published a follow-up rather than a victory story. Its first paragraph explained what had changed: damaged equipment was being repaired, alternatives for bookings were under discussion, and the concert had not been canceled. Its second paragraph listed decisions that remained open. Ryota wrote the captions this time. Under a photograph of the empty music room he added the date, the time and a note that the room had been temporarily unused during an inspection. He had learned to leave important context inside the frame, even when it made his writing less dramatic. Hina placed Mika’s anonymous words near the end: a room could matter deeply while still needing repairs. The last line of the paper was not a prediction. It was an invitation for students to read the next official update and take part in the discussion. The future of the room remained unwritten; the newspaper’s responsibility was to say so.

3: He feared that the music room might close before anyone acted.

4: The anonymous statement was not reliable evidence of a decision.

解答7: Room bookings and repair needs.

8: A possible outcome has not been formally approved or announced.

12: Repairs and unrecorded lunchtime use affected the booking figures.

13: A leaking window and an unreliable ventilation system.

16: The differences between review, repair and moving activities.

17: Her earlier comments had been repeated out of context and led to angry messages.

18: That Mika feared the school administration.

19: That the meaning of her words would be preserved.

解答21: 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

解答22: A fire-alarm inspection.

24: The frame omitted the notice explaining the temporary closure.

解答25: Music Room to Close.

26: The room’s use was under review and students wanted answers.

27: To persuade the administration to protect the music room.

28: A box separating confirmed facts from open questions.

30: Repairs and unrecorded lunchtime use affected the figures.

解答31: The following Wednesday.

32: A clarification about what the meeting did and did not mean.

解答33: Two months.

解答34: Tuesdays and Thursdays.

35: Students who belonged to no club.

36: He had mistaken his fear for evidence that the room would disappear.

解答37: The final timetable.

39: The date, time and context of the temporary inspection.

40: Responsible reporting respects evidence, context and people’s feelings without presenting uncertainty as a decision.
