hasty generalization(早まった一般化)、false dilemma(偽の二者択一)、straw man(藁人形論法)、circular reasoning(循環論法)、red herring(論点そらし)などは、言葉がもっともらしくても根拠と結論がつながらない典型例です。

Logical Fallacies:
|---|---|---|
| Hasty generalization |
| False dilemma | 2
| Circular reasoning |
| Red herring / weak appeal to authority |
Original fictional debate: At a fictional school, the study room has twenty-four seats. On one afternoon, twenty seats were occupied at 4 p.m. During a discussion, Emi said, ‘Twenty seats were occupied once, so every student must need longer opening hours every day.’ Ken replied, ‘If we extend the room by one hour on Fridays, the school will eventually have to keep it open all night.’ Another student argued, ‘We either open it every night or we do not care about learning.’ The group had not measured daily demand, staffing costs, safety requirements or waiting times. Its actual decision was only to prepare a short proposal for the principal, not to change opening hours. The four statements above come from a practice debate, not from real students.
問1:What did the school actually observe?
問2:Which statement makes a hasty generalization?
問3:Why is the evidence insufficient for Emi’s conclusion?
問4:Which claim is an unsupported slippery slope?
問5:Identify the false dilemma in the debate.
問6:What was the group’s actual decision?
問7:Rewrite Emi’s claim without overgeneralizing.
問8:Give one reasonable alternative to the false dilemma.
問9:What unknown condition should be addressed before extending hours?
問10:Write a three-sentence evidence-based response to the debate.
Original fictional debate: In a fictional committee, Hana proposed keeping a digital school noticeboard alongside printed notices for students who need them. She wanted to test whether the two formats could make information easier to access. Riku replied, ‘Hana wants to ban every printed notice and force all students to own expensive phones.’ Hana had not proposed either action. Riku added, ‘An internet celebrity says paper is old-fashioned, so digital notices must be best for everyone.’ A voluntary survey had collected forty responses, with twenty-six preferring online messages and fourteen preferring printed information. No information about all students’ internet access, the cost of a change or the experience of nonrespondents was available.
問11:What did Hana actually propose?
問12:How did Riku misrepresent Hana’s proposal?
問13:Name the fallacy in that misrepresentation.
問14:What is weak about the celebrity-based argument?
問15:What proportion of respondents preferred online messages?
問16:How many respondents preferred printed notices?
問17:Can the survey establish what every student would need?
問18:Write a fair paraphrase of Hana’s position.
問19:Give an evidence-based question to ask before changing the policy.
問20:Write a polite response identifying both reasoning problems.
Original fictional debate: At a fictional school festival, one volunteer failed to find a classroom using a newly designed sign. Another volunteer reached the room without difficulty. The organiser said, ‘Because one visitor got lost, the new signs are useless everywhere.’ Later, the organiser stated, ‘The signs caused confusion because they were confusing.’ A third speaker insisted, ‘If we replace the arrows, nobody will ever get lost again.’ The school has recorded no representative trial, waiting times or comparison with the previous signs. Staff also noted that the visitors approached the corridor from different entrances. The committee has not decided whether to replace or revise the signs.
問21:What two visitor outcomes were actually recorded?
問22:Which claim is a hasty generalization?
問23:Identify the circular reasoning.
問24:Why is ‘nobody will ever get lost again’ unsupported?
問25:What difference between the two visitors may matter?
問26:Have the revised signs already been approved?
問27:Rewrite the claim about universal failure accurately.
問28:What concrete evidence could explain confusion rather than merely repeat it?
問29:Suggest a reasonable follow-up comparison.
問30:Write a reasoned response without the fallacies.
Original fictional debate: A fictional student council discussed whether to collect clearer feedback on a school recycling trial. The available log reported thirty wrongly sorted items out of one hundred before a signage change and twenty out of one hundred afterward. At the same time, volunteers had given spoken reminders. During the meeting, one student said, ‘We should not ask whether the signs were effective because the festival next month will be exciting.’ Another replied, ‘The signs are effective because they work well.’ A third argued, ‘Only people who dislike the environment would ask for more evidence.’ The group had not isolated the effect of the signs or measured long-term sorting behaviour.
問31:Calculate the initial sorting-error rate.
問32:Calculate the later sorting-error rate.
問33:What difference in percentage points was observed?
問34:Which statement diverts attention to an unrelated issue?
問35:Identify the circular claim in the debate.
問36:What is unfair about saying that critics dislike the environment?
問37:What other change prevents a simple causal conclusion?
問38:Give an appropriate evidence-based description of the change.
問39:What additional study would help evaluate the signs?
問40:Write a short response that stays on the original issue.
1:Twenty of the twenty-four seats were occupied at 4 p.m. on one afternoon.
2:Emi’s statement that every student needs longer hours every day.
3:One seat count does not measure daily demand or every student’s needs.
4:Ken’s prediction that a one-hour Friday trial will lead to all-night opening.
5:The claim that the school must choose all-night opening or indifference to learning.
6:The group decided only to prepare a proposal for the principal.
7:The high seat count at one time suggests that a limited trial may be worth investigating.
8:The school could collect more demand data or test supervised Friday hours.
9:Staff supervision and safe departure arrangements need to be assessed.
10:A single observation of twenty occupied seats out of twenty-four does not show that every student needs daily extended hours. A one-hour Friday trial would not automatically require all-night opening, and other options remain possible. The school should examine demand, staffing and safety before deciding whether any trial is practical.
11:She proposed using digital notices while retaining printed options where needed.
12:He falsely said she wanted to ban all paper and force phone purchases.
13:It is a straw man argument.
14:The celebrity’s opinion does not establish accessibility or usefulness for every student.
15:Twenty-six of forty respondents, or 65 percent, preferred online messages.
16:Fourteen respondents preferred printed notices.
17:No. It excludes nonrespondents and does not measure digital access for everyone.
18:Hana suggested testing a digital system without immediately removing accessible printed notices.
19:How many students can reliably receive online notices, and what would a two-format system cost?
20:Hana’s proposal was to add a digital option while keeping printed notices where necessary, not to force all students to buy phones. The celebrity’s opinion alone cannot show that online notices would work for everyone. The committee should compare access needs, costs and the survey results before deciding whether or how to introduce a new system.
21:One visitor got lost and another found the classroom successfully.
22:The claim that the signs are useless everywhere because one person got lost.
23:Saying that the signs caused confusion simply because they were confusing.
24:No test has established that changing arrows would prevent every future mistake.
25:They approached the corridor from different entrances.
26:No. The committee has not chosen whether to replace or revise them.
27:In a small observation, one visitor had difficulty finding a classroom using the new sign.
28:The team could ask visitors which arrows or junctions were unclear and record their routes.
29:Test the current and revised signs with more visitors arriving through several entrances.
30:The two recorded visitors had different experiences, so the signs cannot be called universally effective or useless. The statement that the signs were confusing explains little without identifying which information caused difficulty. Because visitors entered through different routes, a wider comparison could help. The school should test revised arrows before claiming they will prevent future mistakes.
31:The initial recorded error rate was 30 percent.
32:The later recorded rate was 20 percent.
33:The error rate fell by ten percentage points.
34:The statement about next month’s exciting festival.
35:The signs are effective because they work well.
36:It attacks motives rather than addressing their request for evidence.
37:Spoken reminders were also given during the period.
38:The recorded error rate fell from 30 to 20 percent, but the cause is uncertain.
39:Compare similar inspections while tracking reminders and other conditions.
40:The recorded reduction in sorting errors is worth examining: thirty of one hundred items were incorrectly sorted before the change and twenty afterward. However, the students also received spoken reminders, so we cannot say that signs alone caused the difference. The upcoming festival does not answer that question, and requesting evidence does not imply opposition to environmental protection. A controlled follow-up would be more informative than dismissing critics or repeating that the signs ‘work well’.
