A fictional local craft club considered two packages for a traditional tea gift. Design A showed detailed traditional artwork. Design B retained a small version of the artwork while using larger preparation instructions. Forty-eight volunteers compared the designs. Twenty-seven preferred B and twenty-one preferred A. The club concluded that B was more popular among the respondents. It did not claim that every customer preferred B, because the volunteers were not a random sample of buyers and no purchase had taken place. The participants also rated appearance, not whether they could correctly follow the instructions. One student suggested removing the artwork completely, but another argued that preserving cultural identity was part of the project. They planned a follow-up in which readers would locate specific instructions using both designs. The club called B a promising prototype rather than a finished product. All numbers were recorded for a school learning exercise, not actual market demand.

A fictional student team designed a reusable gift container. Its proposed selling price was 680 yen per box. The estimated variable cost of materials and direct work was 440 yen per box, leaving a contribution of 240 yen before fixed costs. The planned display and equipment fee was 12,000 yen. Under the simplified assumption that each box sold at full price and no other expenses occurred, fifty sales would produce a contribution of 12,000 yen, exactly covering the fixed fee. Forty-nine sales would contribute 11,760 yen, leaving a 240-yen shortfall. The team initially advertised “Profit starts at fifty boxes.” The teacher corrected this because the exercise did not include additional possible costs, unsold stock or tax. Covering the stated fixed fee is not a general guarantee of profit. No order had been placed, and the school had not approved sales. The students decided to present a conditional plan and keep all estimated figures separate from actual sales.

A fictional student group held a classroom simulation about following others when choosing a route. Twelve participants needed to select one of two paths in a drawing. Only three participants saw a small map showing that Path B was shorter; the remaining nine saw the choices made by earlier participants. By the end, eight chose Path A and four chose Path B. The students initially suggested that the larger group must have chosen the better route. Yet the map showed that B was shorter, and most participants did not receive the same information. The activity illustrated how a majority can form without everyone independently checking evidence. The teacher warned that a simulation of people’s choices is not a direct experiment on animal groups and cannot by itself explain every flock or school of fish. The next trial would give everyone identical information and record why each person made a choice. The original exercise could generate questions, not confirm a universal rule about collective behaviour.

A fictional discussion club considered two proposals for improving a school garden. Before hearing other opinions, ten of eighteen students preferred Proposal A, while eight preferred B. During the meeting, a speaker incorrectly claimed that A would cost half as much as B. The actual estimates available to the club did not support that statement. After the discussion, thirteen students selected A and five selected B. The group observed a net increase of three votes for A. However, it had not tracked every person’s individual switch, and other arguments had been presented at the same meeting. It would therefore be too strong to conclude that the false cost claim alone caused the change. When the incorrect figure was noticed, the chair asked the speaker to correct it and offered members a chance to reconsider. The club planned to record verified estimates alongside future debates. Collective decision-making can help people share knowledge, but it can also spread unchecked information if members do not test important claims.

In a fictional school, twenty-eight students completed a short English presentation practice. Afterwards, sixteen reported feeling less nervous, eight reported no change, and four reported feeling more nervous. A class newsletter described the result as “Practice removed stress from all students.” The teacher corrected the headline, noting that twelve of twenty-eight students did not report reduced nervousness. The questionnaire asked about feelings, not the quality of each student’s presentation or any medical outcome. The teacher had also not assigned students randomly to different activities, so the report could not show that this practice was the sole cause of the changes. One student said that a small amount of nervousness sometimes helped them prepare carefully, while another said it made concentration difficult. Those comments reflected personal experiences, not a universal rule. The class decided to report the observed responses precisely and let students choose suitable support rather than treating every feeling in the same way.

A fictional school offered an optional weekly review meeting during a busy term. Twenty students were invited to try the format, and fourteen attended at least once. Of the fourteen attendees, eleven returned feedback forms; eight of those respondents described the meeting as useful, two were unsure, and one said it was not helpful. The school newspaper initially reported that “most invited students found the meeting useful.” The teacher explained that only eight of twenty invited students had actually reported usefulness. This was most of the feedback respondents, not most of all invitees. The school had not measured whether attendees remembered more vocabulary or performed better on examinations. Students could still use independent study plans or other forms of support. The organiser wanted to improve scheduling and make attendance accessible, but did not claim that an optional meeting was a solution for every learner. Further feedback would be collected before extending the programme.

A fictional school announced a research presentation award. Fifty students met the minimum course requirement, but only twelve submitted an application before the deadline. Of those twelve applications, ten satisfied the document checklist and were eligible for evaluation. The judges used an announced rubric with forty points for evidence, thirty for clarity and thirty for response to questions. A student’s total score could therefore reach one hundred points. The committee stated that eligibility did not guarantee an award and that the number of winners had not yet been decided. One applicant argued that high exam grades alone should determine the prizes. Another student replied that the announced award was designed to assess research communication, not general exam performance. The judges also asked whether every applicant had received clear access to the submission instructions and presentation facilities. Their review of access conditions did not remove the value of measured achievement; it helped ensure that the same published criteria could be applied fairly.

A fictional high school considered offering additional preparation meetings before an English presentation assessment. The published assessment rubric was the same for every student: content, organisation and language accuracy. However, a survey suggested that some students had less access to quiet study space or reliable internet outside school. A group of teachers proposed making optional preparation sessions available on campus and offering the same written guidance to students who could not attend. The proposal did not change the marks awarded for the final presentation. A teacher objected that special preparation might create an advantage for some participants, so the planning team discussed how to make information available to everyone. The school had not yet measured whether the support would improve outcomes, and it had not promised that every student would earn a higher score. The committee’s draft conclusion was that fair assessment requires transparent criteria and reasonable access to preparation, but policies should be reviewed against actual evidence rather than assumed benefits.

Critical Writing

Lesson7|Tradition and Innovation

A good product design should respect tradition while addressing practical needs. In the fictional package survey, twenty-seven of forty-eight volunteers preferred the design with larger instructions. However, this result describes appearance preferences rather than actual purchases or comprehension. The cost model also depends on the number of boxes sold and expenses beyond those listed. The team should keep its claims limited and test whether the revised packaging is genuinely easier to use before making a final decision.

Lesson8|Collective Decisions and Evidence

A group can share information, but following the majority does not always produce the best decision. In a fictional route simulation, eight of twelve participants chose Path A even though the map identified Path B as shorter. Most participants did not see the same evidence. In another discussion, support for one option increased after an incorrect cost statement, but other arguments were also presented. Fairer decisions require access to reliable information and opportunities to reconsider rather than simply following numbers of votes.

Lesson9|Pressure and Individual Differences

People can respond differently to the same learning situation. In the fictional presentation practice, sixteen of twenty-eight students reported feeling less nervous afterward, while twelve did not. This self-report does not show a measured improvement in presentations or prove that practice alone caused the change. A separate review meeting was considered useful by eight feedback respondents, but that was not most of all invited students. Schools should offer flexible support and evaluate what is actually helpful without making universal promises.

Lesson10|Achievement and Fair Opportunity

Assessment should recognize achievement through clear criteria, but students also need reasonable opportunities to prepare. A fictional research award used an announced rubric and checked whether applicants had access to the instructions. A separate school considered optional preparation sessions while keeping the same final assessment criteria for everyone. Neither proposal proves that support will raise all scores. A fair process should make expectations transparent, consider barriers and review results using relevant evidence.
