In the fictional town of Elmport, a community support centre helps newcomers understand local clinic notices. Staff noticed that some visitors confused a request for an appointment with a confirmed appointment. To address this problem, they introduced a two-step message: the centre first acknowledged receiving a request, and the clinic later confirmed the actual date and time. During one month, sixty visitors registered for guidance, and forty-two attended a scheduled information session. Another eighteen did not attend that session, but the centre did not know whether all eighteen had stopped seeking support. An early newsletter said the project had solved every communication problem. The centre’s director corrected that claim because it had measured attendance rather than every visitor’s understanding. She also explained that translations needed regular updating as schedules changed. The purpose of the service was to give people accurate information and a chance to ask questions, not to make decisions about their treatment on their behalf.

A fictional community organiser, Aria, began helping newly arrived families in 2008. At first she translated short school announcements, but she soon realised that some announcements became outdated before they reached readers. In 2011 she helped a local centre introduce a date check for translated notices. In 2015 the centre began holding monthly meetings so families could explain unclear information directly. A newspaper profile published in 2020 described Aria as the founder of the entire centre. She asked the editor for a correction because the centre had existed before she joined. She said that the work depended on teachers, interpreters, families and many others. Aria’s later reflection emphasised that a good service does not become perfect after a single improvement. People need opportunities to identify new problems, and staff should explain what has actually been measured. Her story shows the difference between a person’s motivation, the actions taken and later public praise.

A fictional student environmental club held two beach-cleaning sessions on different Saturday mornings. On the first day it recorded 120 pieces of litter, including 72 plastic items. On the second day it recorded 96 pieces, including 60 plastic items. The club initially announced that plastic pollution had fallen by twelve items after its first cleanup. The teacher explained that the two counts covered different visits, weather conditions and volunteer groups. A lower count on the second day did not necessarily measure a permanent decrease in pollution. It could reflect where volunteers looked or how many items had arrived between sessions. The club also distinguished item counts from weight: 120 pieces did not mean 120 kilograms. It proposed recording the size of the search area and the number of volunteers in future sessions. The students hoped the activity would encourage less waste, but they had not measured whether residents changed their consumption habits.

A fictional city considered a small demonstration of a device that could collect floating litter from a sheltered section of a river. The organisers planned to record 100 kilograms of collected material over two weeks, but the actual gross collection was 82 kilograms. After sorting, 12 kilograms were classified as material outside the target category, leaving 70 kilograms of target litter. The project therefore had three different numbers: a 100-kilogram target, 82 kilograms of gross material and 70 kilograms of target material. A draft report claimed that the device achieved 82 percent of its target. That was accurate if the target was defined as gross material, but not if the project intended to measure target litter only. The team decided to define its measure explicitly in the next report. It also noted that collecting litter did not establish a reduction in plastic entering the sea as a whole. Upstream sources, operating conditions and the cost of maintenance remained important questions. The trial had not been expanded beyond the sheltered location.

A fictional science-reading seminar introduced the concept of a knockout model in genetics. In a simplified explanation, researchers may study what happens when the function of a particular gene is absent. Such models can help scientists ask questions about biological processes, but an observed difference does not automatically identify every cause or provide a treatment for a human disease. The seminar examined a fictional summary comparing two groups of 28 observations. Eighteen observations in one group and sixteen in the other met a stated behavioural criterion. The report did not provide enough information about assignment, measurement reliability or other conditions to establish a broad causal conclusion. The teacher asked students to explain the purpose of a model separately from the strength of a particular result. She also stressed that work involving animals requires appropriate expert oversight and ethical review. The class did not perform experiments, and the example gave no practical genetic modification procedure. Its purpose was to practise careful reading of scientific claims.

A fictional university science society described the decisions of its ethics review panel without giving experimental procedures. Four research proposals were submitted. Two received approval after the panel checked their stated aims, proposed oversight and relevant safeguards. One proposal was returned for revision because its description of welfare monitoring was incomplete. The fourth was not approved. A student newspaper initially reported that three proposals had passed, confusing the request for revision with a completed approval. The panel corrected the statement: two approved, one requiring revision and one not approved. It explained that submitting additional documents does not itself make a revised proposal eligible to proceed; a new decision is required. The committee also emphasised that scientific value does not remove the need to consider potential harm, responsible review and the limits of available evidence. A review record can show the status of a proposal, but it does not prove that its scientific hypothesis is correct. The panel planned to report any later change separately.

41: What happens when a particular gene’s function is absent.

解答52: Two.
解答53: One.

Critical Writing
Lesson4|Accuracy and Community Support
Reliable community support requires more than translated words. In the fictional centre, a request for an appointment had to be distinguished from confirmation by the clinic. The number of people attending an information session did not show that every visitor understood the notices. Aria’s experience also illustrates that services depend on cooperation and updated information rather than the achievement of one person alone. A useful programme should provide clear explanations, respect people’s choices and welcome corrections instead of claiming that all problems have been solved.
Lesson5|Ocean Waste and Evidence
Environmental cleanup can be valuable, but reports should distinguish observations from broad claims. A fictional beach club counted fewer plastic items on its second visit, yet the search conditions differed. A river project collected 82 kilograms in total, of which 70 kilograms were in the target category. Neither number proves a reduction of all plastic entering the sea. Responsible evaluation should define the measure, describe local conditions and consider maintenance, prevention and follow-up observations before declaring a permanent solution.
Lesson6|Scientific Models and Responsibility
Scientific models can help researchers explore questions about biology, but a model does not automatically establish a treatment for people. The fictional seminar compared observations without enough detail to support a broad causal claim. An ethics panel separately reviewed proposals and approved only two of four. Approval shows that review conditions were met; it is not proof that a scientific hypothesis is true. Research should be evaluated using appropriate evidence, expert oversight and careful explanation of uncertainty.
