First person:I / myで語り、語り手の知覚・考えから世界を眺めます。Third-person limited:he / sheで語っても、一人の登場人物の感覚・思考を中心にします。
I arrived at the school gym twenty minutes before the ceremony. The blue banner had been moved from its usual position, and I assumed that somebody had forgotten to put it back. My friend Saki stood near the door with a folded piece of paper in her hand. I wanted to ask what it said, but she turned away as soon as she noticed me. Perhaps she was angry. Perhaps she was simply checking the schedule. I could not know. During the rehearsal, the microphone stopped working. I saw a teacher carry it into the next room, then return with a different one. The sound was clear again. I told Saki that the ceremony would probably start late, although nobody had made such an announcement. She pointed to a clock and said, ‘We still have ten minutes.’ Just before the ceremony, Saki gave the paper to the principal. Later, I saw it on a table: it was a list of people who would receive certificates. I had mistaken her silence for a message about our friendship. Even after learning what the paper was, I could not tell why she had avoided me earlier. I decided to ask rather than invent an explanation.

Mika entered the school library carrying a model of a small bridge. She had built it over the weekend and hoped to show it to her science teacher. At the counter, Ren was closing a notebook. He said, ‘The teacher is busy today.’ Mika felt disappointed, but she thanked him and put the model in its box. She noticed that Ren’s hands were covered with glue. Perhaps he had been repairing something. The narration stayed close to Mika: it described what she saw, remembered, and felt, but it did not open Ren’s private thoughts. During lunch, Mika returned to the library and found an empty display table next to the window. A note on it said, ‘Please keep this space clear until two.’ She wondered whether somebody was preparing an exhibition. At two, her teacher arrived with several students and invited Mika to place her bridge on the table. Ren smiled but did not explain his earlier warning. Mika realized that she had not known the complete plan. She was happy about the invitation, yet she still did not know whether Ren had meant to protect the surprise. The story gives readers Mika’s uncertainty rather than an answer from Ren’s mind.

The school orchestra was preparing for its first concert in the new hall. Yuna waited behind the curtain, certain that she had forgotten the opening note of her solo. In the audience, her father looked calm, but he was silently worried because he knew how much she had practiced. Neither could see into the other’s thoughts. Near the piano, conductor Aki had a different concern: the stage lighting was brighter than expected, and he feared that the musicians might have trouble reading their scores. The narration, however, could move among these people’s private thoughts. When Yuna stepped forward, she saw her father folding the program. She imagined that he was bored. The narrator tells us he was actually trying to stop his hands from trembling. Aki asked the lighting technician to reduce the brightness. As the lights softened, Yuna found her opening note. The concert began. At the end of the piece, her father stood to applaud. Yuna assumed he was simply being polite, while the narrator reveals that he felt proud. Readers are given information that Yuna does not have, and that difference changes how they understand her interpretation of his actions. Yet the story does not tell us what every person in the entire audience thought; an omniscient perspective need not report everything.

At 4:15, a girl entered a quiet classroom with a brown folder. She placed it on the teacher’s desk and sat beside the window. Two minutes later, a boy came in and pointed to the folder. ‘Is that the corrected version?’ he asked. The girl nodded. The boy opened it and compared two pages. He took a pencil from his pocket and drew a circle around a number. ‘This one is different,’ he said. The girl leaned forward, looked at the number, and opened her own notebook. The two checked the figure on a printed table. After a minute, the girl crossed out a sentence and wrote another. The classroom clock showed 4:21. A teacher entered and asked whether the sources had been checked. Both students answered yes. The teacher signed the bottom of the page, then left. The boy closed the folder. ‘We can send it now,’ he said. The girl picked up her bag and switched off the light. The account presents sounds, actions, objects, and spoken words. It does not say what either student privately hoped, feared, or remembered. A reader may infer that the correction mattered, but cannot quote the narrator as saying the students were relieved. That emotion is not stated in the text.

I thought Saki was angry, but I could not be sure.(咲が怒っていると思ったが確信できなかった)を、Nao thought Saki was angry, but she could not be sure.
Mika put the model back in its box and looked down.
