On the morning of the school exhibition, Nao put a white envelope beside her science poster. It contained a letter for a former teacher who would visit that afternoon. Three times she lifted it, and three times she set it down. A classmate asked whether something was wrong. ‘The glue is terrible,’ Nao replied, although the envelope closed perfectly well. At lunch, she watched visitors entering the school and checked her watch twice within a minute. When her teacher arrived, Nao explained her experiment without making a mistake, but she stopped reaching for the envelope halfway. ‘You can give it to me another day,’ the teacher said. Nao laughed briefly and looked at the floor. As the teacher prepared to leave, Nao finally gave her the envelope. The teacher opened it outside the classroom. After the door closed, Nao took a long breath and sat down. Neither the contents of the letter nor Nao’s exact thoughts are revealed. The narrator never says, ‘Nao was nervous.’ Instead, the repeated gestures invite the reader to infer how she might have felt.

Every Friday, an empty chair stood beside the window in the school music room. No sign reserved it, yet students walked around it. Mei’s older sister used to sit there during rehearsals before she graduated. Mei never spoke about the graduation. She simply polished the back of that chair after each practice, leaving the other chairs untouched. One afternoon a new student, Toma, moved the chair toward the piano. Mei put down her music book so quickly that its pages fell to the floor. ‘Sorry,’ Toma said. ‘It’s fine,’ Mei answered, then placed the chair back beside the window. A few days later, rain blew through an open window and wet the chair. Mei took it into the corridor to dry it. When she returned, Toma had put a different chair near the window. ‘I thought you might want a place here,’ he said. Mei was silent for a moment. Then she drew the new chair beside his and opened her music book. The story does not explain whether Toma knew the chair’s history. Nor does it label the chair a symbol of loss. Its repeated appearance and Mei’s changing actions give the object emotional importance.

Haru prepared the opening statement for a school debate. Her notebook began, ‘Everyone who disagrees with our plan is afraid of change.’ She underlined the sentence twice. On the train, a younger student asked whether cost and safety might also explain disagreement. Haru closed her notebook and watched the buildings pass. At school, the adviser read the opening and asked only, ‘Who is everyone?’ Haru crossed out the sentence. In the corridor, she heard two classmates comparing the plan’s expected benefits and unverified costs. She listened without joining them. Ten minutes before the debate, she wrote a new opening: ‘Our plan may improve access, but its costs need closer examination.’ In the debate, an opponent asked where one estimate came from. Haru answered that it had not yet been verified. She did not win the contest. Afterward, the adviser pointed to the crossed-out sentence. Haru smiled briefly and opened a blank page. The narrator does not describe her as wiser. Instead, the movement from absolute certainty to a carefully limited claim suggests a change in how she thinks. The exact future of the plan remains unknown.

The station clock read 6:10 when Kaito reached the platform. He had promised to help his grandfather sort old photographs, but a late bus and a forgotten key had ruined his afternoon. A message from his grandfather said, ‘Don’t worry. We can do it another day.’ Kaito typed ‘Sorry’ and deleted it. He typed a long explanation and deleted that too. Water fell from the station roof onto an old timetable. The next train was due in twelve minutes. Kaito walked to the far end of the platform and back. On opening the message again, he noticed a photograph of a wooden box. It contained three pictures he had never seen. Below it his grandfather had written, ‘I saved these because I thought you might like them.’ Kaito sat down and studied each picture. He called his grandfather instead of sending a text. The first thing he said was, ‘Who is the person by the tree?’ The story ends before the reply. The narrator never labels Kaito as frustrated or curious, yet his repeated deleted messages and later phone call suggest a change in attention. The identities of the people in the photographs remain unknown.

例題:He was nervous. He checked the door twice and folded the same piece of paper again.(彼は扉を2度確かめ、同じ紙をもう一度折った)。

例題2:She felt relieved. She lowered her shoulders and took a slow breath after reading the reply.(返事を読んだ後で肩の力を抜き、ゆっくり息をついた)。
