Beside the school garden stood an old wooden bench. On its left arm, somebody had tied a short red thread. Nobody knew when it first appeared. In spring, a student named Eri found the thread while planting seeds with her grandfather. He told her that people sometimes left small signs to remember a promise, but he did not claim to know who had tied this one. Eri left the thread where it was. During summer, workers repaired the bench and removed the thread to protect it from paint. They placed it in a small envelope and attached the envelope to a noticeboard. The garden committee later invited students to suggest whether the thread should be put back. Some wanted to keep the bench plain. Others liked the reminder that the garden belonged to many people. In autumn, Eri tied a new red thread to the right arm of the bench. Her grandfather asked why she had chosen the other side. ‘Because this one is ours,’ she said. The narrator does not explain the color red as a fixed symbol of love or courage. The thread appears repeatedly, but its meaning changes from an unknown sign to a deliberate mark of Eri’s shared experience with her grandfather.

A clock hung above the entrance to the town’s small reading room. For years, its hands had stopped at 7:15. Visitors sometimes assumed that the battery was dead, but the clock had no battery; it was an old mechanical clock. The caretaker, Mr. Ito, dusted its glass every Monday without moving the hands. A young visitor asked him why he did not repair it. He replied, ‘It reminds me of the evening we opened this room.’ The clock had stopped during the first celebration, when somebody had forgotten to wind it. Mr. Ito had left it that way even after the room became busy. One winter, the town decided to renovate the entrance and asked whether the clock should be repaired. Some residents wished to preserve the moment. Others wanted visitors to know the correct time. The caretaker proposed keeping the old hands and mechanism but winding the clock again. At the reopening, he turned a small key. The second hand moved. Children looked up, surprised. Mr. Ito watched until the minute hand left its old position. ‘We haven’t lost that evening,’ he said. ‘We have given the clock another one.’ The story connects the clock to memory and change, but it does not say that the town had stopped developing while the clock was still.

On the first day of the new school year, Ken folded a piece of blank paper into a plane and set it on his desk. He had just transferred to the school and did not know anybody in his class. When the teacher asked students to write one question they wished to explore, Ken wrote nothing. His plane stayed on the desk all day. A week later, the class started a project about local rivers. Ken wrote a question about the water near his grandfather’s house and folded the paper into a second plane. He did not throw it. Instead, he placed it beside the first one. Two classmates invited him to join their group after reading his question. By the end of the month, the group had collected photographs and measurements but had not reached a final conclusion. Before their presentation, Ken folded a third plane from a draft page full of corrections. This time he carried it to the front of the room. After the presentation, he unfolded the third plane to show his teacher the changed sentences. ‘We still have questions,’ he said. The narrator never calls the planes symbols of freedom. Their different states—blank, written, and corrected—parallel the development of Ken’s participation and willingness to ask questions. The story does not imply that every question has been answered.

When Aya joined the school newspaper, the meeting-room door was usually locked. The editor carried a small brass key and opened it five minutes before each meeting. Aya began to associate the key with permission: without the editor, she could not enter the room to check old issues. She often arrived early and waited outside. One afternoon, the editor asked Aya to organize the archive. He placed the brass key on the desk but said, ‘Please return it before you leave.’ Aya used it to open a cupboard containing old photographs. There she found a missing caption in a report about a previous school festival. She checked the date in the printed program and corrected the archive entry. Weeks later, the newspaper team decided that archive access should not depend on one editor’s schedule. The school approved a system allowing authorized students to borrow a shared key from the office. On the first day of the new system, Aya arrived and saw the meeting-room door already open. The brass key was hanging inside the office cabinet. She entered without waiting. The object first marks limited access and later a more shared responsibility. Yet the key is still a physical object governed by a borrowing rule; the story does not claim that all school records became public or that anyone could enter without permission.

The three paper planes appear at different stages of Ken’s school life. The blank plane reflects his early hesitation, the second carries his first research question, and the third contains corrections. Their changing contents suggest his growing willingness to participate and revise his ideas. However, the story does not claim that all his questions have been answered.
