On Monday afternoon, the school music club decided to welcome its former pianist, Ms. Arai, with a surprise performance. The members booked the small hall for Friday at four and prepared a program with three songs. They asked the school office not to put the purpose of the gathering on the public notice. Their classmate Ren had been asked to help carry chairs. He saw a notice reading ‘Music Club Meeting, Friday, 4 p.m.’ and assumed that the club wanted to discuss its budget. The reader, however, already knows what the meeting is really for. On Thursday, Ren told the others that Ms. Arai would probably be bored by another meeting about money. The club leader smiled and said only, ‘Please come on time.’ Ren spent Friday morning checking the chairs because he did not want to disappoint the group. When Ms. Arai entered the hall, Ren stood near the door with a list of equipment. At the first note of the piano, he looked toward the stage. Then he noticed a banner with the words ‘Welcome back.’ Ms. Arai stopped in the aisle, surprised. Ren finally understood why the others had been secretive. The story does not say that he was foolish. His mistaken expectation comes from the limited notice he had seen, while the reader has been told the plan from the opening paragraph.

On Tuesday morning, a teacher placed two envelopes on the school office desk. One contained the corrected timetable for the science fair. The other held an old draft with a time that was no longer valid. She wrote ‘CURRENT’ on the first and ‘ARCHIVE’ on the second, then asked an assistant to put the old one in a locked storage drawer. A gust from an open window blew the small labels under a folder. The assistant returned after lunch and saw two unmarked envelopes. Not knowing which was which, he picked the one nearest the telephone and carried it to the noticeboard. The narrator tells the reader that he had selected the archive envelope. At two o’clock, Mika arrived to check the schedule. The notice said that the fair would begin at one on Saturday. She called her friend to say that they could come early. Meanwhile, the corrected timetable in the office showed a two o’clock start. The teacher noticed the mistake before the end of the school day. She replaced the notice, told the assistant what had happened, and sent a correction to registered students. Mika received the new message that evening. She had not deliberately spread false information; she had relied on a notice that appeared official. The story ends before Saturday, so it gives no evidence about the actual number of visitors.

Before the school play, the lighting technician, Aoi, discovered that one stage lamp had failed. A second lamp was working, so she arranged a safe replacement and wrote the change in the rehearsal log. She told the director but could not find the actor Toma before the curtain rose. In an earlier rehearsal, Toma had been told to step into a narrow circle of light when delivering his final line. The reader now knows that the original circle will not appear. As the play begins, Toma waits offstage and repeats the direction to himself: ‘Three steps left, then the light.’ He is certain that following this instruction will place him in the spotlight. Meanwhile, Aoi is using a wider light from above to illuminate the entire center of the stage. When Toma walks forward, he takes three steps left and finds no narrow circle. He hesitates, then notices that the center is already bright. He delivers the line from there. The audience applauds at the end, though the narrative does not claim the whole performance was flawless. After the curtain, Aoi explains the equipment change and apologizes for not reaching him in time. Toma says he understands and asks the team to put important changes on a visible notice before the next performance. The reader’s earlier knowledge of the lamp failure makes his confident rehearsal instructions a source of dramatic irony, not proof that Toma was careless.

A science club prepared to present a survey of students’ reading habits. Thirty students had returned questionnaires, and eighteen had answered that they enjoyed reading in a quiet room. The club leader, Sora, wrote on a slide that ‘most students at this school prefer quiet rooms.’ Before the presentation, the statistics teacher examined the raw data and warned the assistant, Ken, that the sample contained only thirty respondents, not the whole school. Ken revised the explanatory notes but forgot to replace the original slide on the projector computer. The narrator tells readers that the unsupported sentence is still there. Sora, who has not seen the warning or the revised notes, enters the classroom confident that the slides are ready. She begins by saying, ‘Our survey proves what the entire school wants.’ The audience can see the same slide she sees, but readers know why its conclusion is too broad. In the question period, a student asks how many pupils attended the school and whether the sample was representative. Sora checks her notes and realizes that the survey alone cannot answer either question. She corrects her statement publicly: eighteen of thirty respondents preferred the quiet room, but the school’s overall preference had not been measured. Ken then explains the missed update. Their teacher praises the correction while reminding the team to verify the final display next time. Neither the survey nor the correction proves that a particular room design is best for everyone.

Readers know that the displayed timetable is outdated, but Mika still believes it is official. This difference in knowledge creates dramatic irony because she tells her friend an incorrect time without intending to mislead anyone. The misunderstanding is corrected when the school sends an updated notice.
