Character arc(人物の変化)を読むときは、dynamic / static(物語を通じて変わるか)とround / flat(描写された性格の複雑さ)を別々に判断します。

When Haru became editor of the school magazine, he promised himself that he would check every article alone. He believed that asking other people for help would make him appear unprepared. During the first week, he worked late three evenings and corrected twelve captions. On Thursday he found that two pages had been printed with an outdated timetable. The printer offered to replace them if the club provided the correct file by Friday noon. Haru tried to repair the file without telling anybody. By eleven on Friday he had corrected the dates but had not checked the page numbers or contact details. His classmate Nao asked why he had not shared the problem. ‘It’s my responsibility,’ he replied. Nao said that responsibility could also mean making sure the result was accurate. Haru hesitated, then gave her the contact page and asked another student to check the page numbers. By noon, they had sent a revised file with the errors identified and corrected. The printer confirmed receipt but said the new pages would not be ready until the next week. At the following club meeting, Haru introduced a two-person review system for future issues. He had not stopped caring about responsibility; rather, he had changed what the word meant to him. His arc runs from trying to control every task alone to accepting shared checking. The story does not claim that he became a perfect leader.

At the beginning of the science club’s river project, Mai asked the teacher one question: ‘How do we know that our measurement is accurate?’ Her classmates laughed because they wanted to start collecting data immediately. The teacher explained that instruments needed checking before use. On the second week, the team recorded fifteen water-temperature readings. One student suggested removing an unusually high value because it looked wrong. Mai asked again whether they had checked the instrument and the circumstances of the measurement. The group found that the sensor had been left in direct sunlight for a short period. They kept the original reading in their archive and marked the conditions beside it. In the final week, the students prepared a report with a graph. Most of them wanted to publish it quickly. Mai asked the same question for a third time: had another person checked the data? The team arranged an independent review and corrected a typing error. At the last meeting, the teacher praised Mai’s consistency. Her central belief in checking evidence had remained steady, even as the group’s procedures improved. She could be described as relatively static in that respect, but the story does not present her as simple-minded. She notices errors, cares about her classmates, and changes how she communicates. A static central value does not mean a character has no depth or no smaller changes.

Yui entered a short-story contest at a fictional high school. She wanted to win because a prize would help her apply for an advanced writing workshop. Her friend Sora also entered. At first, Yui offered to read Sora’s draft, but she regretted the promise when she discovered that Sora’s opening was stronger than her own. She spent an evening wondering whether giving honest feedback would reduce her chance of winning. The next day Sora asked what she thought. Yui said that the opening was effective, but the ending needed a clearer connection to the main character’s decision. She did not rewrite Sora’s story for her. Later that week, Yui found a weakness in her own dialogue and asked Sora to read it. Sora pointed out two lines that sounded unnatural. Both revised their work before the deadline. When the results were announced, neither won first prize. Yui received a commendation for her dialogue, and Sora was invited to a reading event. Yui was disappointed about the main prize, yet genuinely pleased for her friend. The narrator shows ambition, jealousy, honesty, disappointment, and generosity in the same person. Such complexity supports describing Yui as a round character. Whether she underwent a major transformation is less clear: the story shows a difficult decision and modest growth, not a complete reversal of her goals.

In a school play, a ticket clerk appeared briefly at the beginning and the end of the story. Each time, the clerk said, ‘Please keep your ticket until you leave.’ The clerk had no named family members, private memories, or independent goal in the narrative. The clerk’s role was practical: to remind visitors of the ticket rule and make the theater setting clear. The main character, Taro, barely noticed the instruction at first. He lost his ticket in the middle of the story and had to ask his friend to help search for it. He felt embarrassed about needing help and initially accused a younger student of taking it. After reviewing where he had been, he found the ticket in his own notebook. He apologized to the younger student and thanked his friend. At the end, the clerk repeated the same sentence as Taro left the theater. Taro now smiled and checked his pocket. The clerk remained essentially unchanged and was portrayed with only a few traits, so the clerk functions as a relatively flat, static supporting character. Taro, by contrast, changes how he handles mistakes and accusations, making him more dynamic. A flat character is not necessarily a badly written one; a brief role may be effective without a detailed inner life. The story does not say whether the clerk knew about Taro’s lost ticket.
