Argument Map

Claim(主張):何を結論とするか。Evidence(根拠):測定値・観測・記録。Warrant(論拠・前提):なぜその根拠が結論を支えると考えるか。Counterargument(反対意見):その結論の弱点。Qualifier(限定):if・may・under these conditionsなどで適用範囲を示すこと。

A fictional school council has proposed a two-Saturday trial of longer library hours. It surveyed sixty students, and forty-eight returned valid responses. Twenty-two respondents selected longer Saturday hours as their highest priority, sixteen selected quieter seating, and ten selected additional computers. Because longer hours received the largest number of votes, the council suggested that the library should test a short extension. However, this choice did not receive a majority: twenty-two is less than half of forty-eight. The council’s reasoning also depends on an assumption that staff and space can be made available without disrupting other services. A teacher objected that a limited budget might make quieter seating more useful than extra hours. The council acknowledged the objection and proposed recording actual visits and staff requirements during the trial. It did not claim that the extension had already improved examination scores or been adopted permanently. The council’s final position was conditional: a limited trial could be justified if the school confirmed its staffing and budget, and a continuation decision should depend on evidence collected during that trial.

A fictional student research group compared two voluntary study routines. Thirty students chose to use reminder messages from an English vocabulary app; another thirty chose to study without reminders. At the end of a week, twenty-one students in the reminder group reported completing their planned review, while seventeen in the other group reported completion. Some members of the group concluded that reminders caused better study habits. Their teacher challenged this interpretation: students had chosen their own routines, and the two groups might have differed in motivation before the study began. The results were also self-reported, not independent measurements of vocabulary learning. A student opposed compulsory reminders because some learners might find them distracting. The research group agreed that reminders should remain optional during further testing. It proposed recording actual review activity with suitable privacy safeguards and comparing volunteers under more similar conditions. The group did not claim that reminders guarantee better examination results. Its revised argument was that optional reminders may help some learners, but the present results are too limited to prove a general causal benefit.

A fictional school cafeteria considered offering a reusable container instead of a disposable one for selected takeaway lunches. A team estimated that purchasing a reusable container would cost 300 yen and that washing and checking it would add 25 yen for each completed use. The disposable alternative was estimated to cost 65 yen per lunch. For exactly five completed uses, the estimated reusable cost was 300 plus five times 25, or 425 yen, compared with 325 yen for five disposables. For ten completed uses, the estimates became 550 yen for the reusable option and 650 yen for the disposable option. These are simplified hypothetical calculations, not an account of the cafeteria’s actual costs. A student argued that reusable containers must always save money. The teacher noted that the conclusion depends on the number of uses, handling costs and whether containers can be returned and maintained appropriately. The team also had not assessed suitability for different users or the required operational and hygiene arrangements. Rather than promise immediate savings, it proposed a small school-approved trial, with proper checks carried out by responsible staff.

A fictional English department considered whether students should choose from twelve reading titles rather than four. The teachers hoped that additional choice might help learners find material they wanted to read. In a small voluntary survey, forty students were asked to select a preferred title list. Twenty-four chose the twelve-title list and sixteen chose the four-title list. The department initially proposed expanding the programme immediately because most respondents had chosen the larger set. That statement was accurate for the responding group, since twenty-four exceeds half of forty. However, the survey measured stated preference, not whether students would read more or understand the texts better. Some teachers objected that preparing twelve titles could reduce the time available for discussing each book. Another student noted that people who have difficulty choosing might benefit from a smaller recommended set even when more books are available. The department therefore proposed an option in which learners could choose from twelve titles but also follow a suggested four-title route. This design was still a proposal, and the department planned to compare participation and understanding before deciding whether to adopt it more widely.

1: A limited two-Saturday trial, not a permanent extension.

解答3: 22 of 48, about 45.8%.

4: The library should consider a limited trial of longer Saturday hours.

5: Twenty-two of forty-eight respondents chose longer Saturday hours.

6: Sufficient staff and space can be provided within the available budget.

7: Limited funds might make quieter seating more useful.

8: Actual visits and staffing requirements during the trial.

9: Longer hours were the most popular choice among respondents, but not a majority.

10: A trial may be reasonable if staffing and budget are confirmed; continuation requires further evidence.

解答11: Thirty in each group.

20: The outcomes were participants’ reports, not independent measurements.

28: Its truth depends on the number of uses and operating conditions.

29: Return and maintenance procedures, plus suitability and operational checks.

30: Reuse may reduce costs after enough completed uses, subject to responsible operational checks.

解答35: Yes, 24 of 40 is 60%.

解答36: Actual reading or comprehension.

37: Preparing twelve titles could reduce discussion time for each book.

38: Offer a suggested route of four titles within the larger choice set.

39: No, the combined approach remains a proposal.

40: More choices would need to improve engagement without undermining teaching quality.

Claim:

Warrant / hidden assumption:

Qualifier / next evidence:

A limited trial of longer library hours may be worth considering, but the survey does not prove that most students want it. Twenty-two of forty-eight respondents chose this option, making it the largest single group rather than a majority. The school must also confirm that staff and funds are available. Quieter seating may be a reasonable alternative. A short trial with recorded visits and costs would provide stronger evidence before any permanent decision.

Case 2|B|

Claim:

Warrant / hidden assumption:

Qualifier / next evidence:

Optional app reminders might support some learners, but the available numbers do not prove that reminders caused better learning. Twenty-one students in the reminder group and seventeen in the other group reported completing their review. Because the students selected their own routines, motivation could explain part of the difference. Reminders may also distract some students. The school should keep the feature optional and test its effects with better evidence.

Case 3|C|

Claim:

Evidence:

Warrant / hidden assumption:

Qualifier / next evidence:

Reusable containers may become cheaper after repeated use, but the initial purchase cost must be included. Under the fictional assumptions, five uses cost 425 yen for the reusable container versus 325 yen for disposables. At ten uses, the reusable estimate is 550 yen versus 650 yen. These comparisons depend on return rates, handling costs and suitable operations. The cafeteria should verify those conditions before making a permanent decision.

Case 4|D|

Warrant / hidden assumption:

Qualifier / next evidence:

A larger reading list could help students find interesting books, but choice alone is not evidence of better learning. Twenty-four of forty respondents preferred twelve titles, which is a majority of the surveyed group. Preparing more titles could nevertheless reduce discussion time, and some learners may find too many choices difficult. A combined approach with twelve available titles and a suggested four-title route deserves testing before wider adoption.

「The trial proves that every student benefits.」 単なる好みの調査なら「The survey suggests that some respondents prefer this option.」

「Although the option was popular among respondents, its practical effect has not been measured.」
