A fictional high school set up a small shelf where students could leave unused notebooks for others. The goal was to make stationery easier to obtain and to encourage reuse. During a four-week trial, volunteers recorded eighty notebook pickups. Students could take more than one notebook, and the shelf did not require registration. Volunteers also recorded thirty donations, but each donation could contain several notebooks.
The student council announced that eighty students had benefited from the shelf and that eighty new notebooks had been saved from production. The organisers questioned both statements. Pickups were not the same as individual users, and nobody had asked whether students would otherwise have bought new notebooks. A few notebooks were returned unused. The trial therefore showed that the shelf was used, not how much waste or spending it had prevented.
For the next term, the club planned an anonymous survey about how often students used the shelf and what they would have done without it. It also planned to keep donations and pickups separate in the report. The club hoped that better information would help it decide how often volunteers should check the shelf.

30:Some notebooks were returned unused.
A fictional public library tested a quiet reading area and an ordinary reading area for six weekends. At each area, staff asked visitors to rate how comfortable they felt on a five-point scale. One hundred people agreed to answer: sixty from the quiet area and forty from the ordinary area. In the quiet area, forty-eight rated their experience four or five. In the ordinary area, twenty-four gave a rating of four or five.
The library newsletter reported that the new quiet area had made readers significantly more comfortable. The head librarian asked readers to be cautious. People had chosen the area they preferred, and staff had not measured their comfort before the trial. The groups also differed in size. The results described the survey respondents, but they did not isolate the effect of the room design itself.
The library planned to ask people with different reading preferences to try both spaces in a future study. It would use the same questions in both conditions and record how long visitors remained in each space. For now, the library would keep both areas available rather than declare one universally better.
