NEW TREASURE（ニュートレジャー）Stage4・5の定期テストやReadで、although、even though、despite、in spite of、however、whereasを同じように「しかし」と訳していませんか。これらは譲歩・逆接・対比を示せますが、後ろに主語＋動詞が必要か、名詞・動名詞句を続けるか、二つの文をどうつなぐかが異なります。語法の違いを理解すると、空所補充だけでなく文整序・英作文のミスを減らせます。
この記事はＺ会の学校専用教材を転載せず、慶英会のオリジナル40問と全解答で高校段階の逆接・譲歩を練習する教材です。前半は使い分けと意味を保った書き換え、後半は実際の誤文訂正と独自Readの論理説明を扱います。学校で指定された版・Lesson・定期試験の範囲を優先して活用してください。

接続詞・前置詞・接続副詞を区別する
- although / even though＋主語＋動詞：Although it was raining, we continued the activity.（雨だったが続けた）。
- despite / in spite of＋名詞・動名詞：Despite the rain / Despite feeling tired, …（雨にもかかわらず／疲れているのに）。
- however / nevertheless：接続副詞。通常、前の独立節とピリオド・セミコロンなどで区切り、後ろはコンマを置く。
- but：等位接続詞として二つの節を結ぶ。文中のbutとhoweverの句読法を混同しない。
- whereas / while：二つの主体・状況の対比を示せる。whileは時間を表す場合もある。
British CouncilのContrasting ideas: although, despite and othersでは、although/even thoughの後ろに節、despite/in spite ofの後ろに名詞・動名詞句を使う違いを示しています。慶英会では単なる言い換え暗記ではなく、後続する語句の形から正しい候補を選ぶ練習を行います。
althoughとdespiteの誤りを先に直す
× Despite it was raining, the event continued. → ○ Although it was raining, the event continued. / Despite the rain, the event continued. というように、名詞句の有無と、主語・動詞が入っているかを確認します。despite ofは通常用いませんが、in spite ofにはofが必要です。
また× The experiment seemed useful, however the results were uncertain. は、通常 The experiment seemed useful; however, the results were uncertain. とします。althoughを使った節とbutを一文内で重ねる誤りもよくあるため、構造を整えてください。

独自英文｜Evening Access to a Learning Center
Paragraph 1
A fictional town introduced evening access to a small learning center twice a week. Although the number of recorded visits increased during the first month, the organizers did not count distinct users. Some residents returned several times, and the town could not tell how many new people had begun using the center.
Paragraph 2
Whereas several visitors wanted longer opening hours, staff members were concerned about supervision and heating costs. Despite the positive comments received, most feedback came from people who had volunteered to answer a questionnaire. The organizers had not yet asked nonusers why they did not attend.
Paragraph 3
The town reported more downloads of educational materials after the trial began. However, downloads did not demonstrate that students had learned more, because no examination results or long-term outcomes were measured. In spite of the limited first trial, the committee decided to continue collecting data for another month before considering any permanent expansion.

Q. althoughとdespiteは全く同じですか？
A. 似た意味ですが文法上の役割が異なります。althoughは節、despiteは名詞・動名詞句などを続けます。
Q. in spite ofとdespiteはどう違いますか？
A. 同じように使える場面が多い一方、in spite ofにはofが必要で、despiteには通常ofを付けません。
Q. howeverの前には必ずセミコロンが必要ですか？
A. 必ずではありません。ピリオドで前の文を終え、新しい文の先頭にHowever, …と置くこともできます。
Q. whileは「〜の間に」以外の意味がありますか？
