Z会の2026年版公式カタログはStage4にFurther Readingを2本掲載し、第1編「What Everyone Needs to Know?」
Further Reading

1|The Study Hall and the Meaning of Fair Access
Paragraph 1
On weekdays, children in the fictional town of Glenmoor could study at school until late afternoon. After school, however, many depended on shared rooms, local libraries, or quiet corners at home to complete their assignments. A group of volunteers proposed keeping an unused community hall open for two hours each evening. They believed that a place to study would be particularly useful for families living far from the town library.
Paragraph 2
During a six-week trial, visitors could use tables, read books, and ask volunteers for help finding information. The organizers recorded 360 entries, but they did not ask each person to register under a unique identifier. Therefore, the figure represented visits, not the number of children who used the hall. A student might have returned many times. The organizers also collected 45 feedback forms, mostly from families who already used the hall.
Paragraph 3
Some parents appreciated the additional space. Others were concerned that the hall was not near public transport, making it hard for younger children to travel there without an adult. A member of the council pointed out that extending opening hours would require heating, supervision, and regular maintenance. The volunteers acknowledged these costs, but argued that a limited trial could help identify the level of demand before the town committed to a permanent service.
Paragraph 4
The trial raised a question about fairness. Should a program be located where the largest number of visitors can use it immediately, or where opportunities are currently most limited? The two aims are not necessarily identical. A central location might attract many entries, while a smaller service in an isolated neighborhood could serve families who otherwise had no similar option. Measuring only entries would favor the first approach without showing which children had the greatest need.
Paragraph 5
The organizers eventually proposed three steps. First, they would count distinct visitors while protecting personal information. Second, they would ask families who had not used the hall what prevented them from attending. Third, they would compare several potential locations and estimate the cost of safe transport. Their report did not claim that the hall had raised school grades. It concluded instead that a fair decision required information about access, outcomes, and cost—not attendance alone.

2|The Clock That Kept a Record
Paragraph 1
The old clock above the town station had not worked for years, but the station keeper, Mr. Arai, still wound it every Sunday. People sometimes laughed at the ritual. The hands had stopped at 8:17, and winding the mechanism did nothing to move them. When my class was invited to design a small history display for the station, I thought the clock would be a perfect example of an object that had lost its purpose.
Paragraph 2
Mr. Arai opened a cabinet and showed me a notebook filled with dates. Each page recorded when he had cleaned the clock, checked its springs, or contacted someone who might know how to repair it. He had never claimed that his efforts were succeeding. On the contrary, the last line on every page was almost the same: ‘Still stopped.’ I asked why he continued. ‘Because a record can be useful before a repair is possible,’ he replied.
Paragraph 3
I wanted our display to describe his devotion, but my friend Eri challenged the idea. ‘Are you sure he wants to be the hero of your story?’ she asked. We had seen visitors smile at the clock, yet we had not asked what the clock meant to them. Perhaps some simply used it as a landmark. Perhaps others remembered a relative who once worked at the station. I had imagined a single moving story because it was easier to write than several incomplete ones.
Paragraph 4
Before printing our display, we interviewed five regular travelers. Three knew that the hands were broken. One said she had always assumed the clock was kept at 8:17 to mark a special historical moment. Another admitted she had never looked closely at it. We checked the station’s old records but found no evidence that 8:17 commemorated an event. Instead of repeating the interesting rumor, we wrote, ‘The reason the hands stopped at this exact time has not been confirmed.’
Paragraph 5
On the opening day, Mr. Arai read the label slowly. Then he took a small piece of paper from his pocket. A retired mechanic had agreed to examine the clock the following month, he said. ‘Perhaps it will work again. Perhaps it won’t.’ I asked whether we should change the final sentence. He shook his head. ‘Your display says what you know today. That is enough for today.’
Paragraph 6
That evening, I watched two children stand beneath the motionless hands. One asked why the clock was broken. The other pointed to our label and began reading it aloud. The clock still did not tell the time. But it had started a conversation, and for the first time I understood that an object could have a purpose that was not the one its maker had intended.
