- Critical Thinking Training:
Paragraph 1
A fictional town installed three temporary shade structures near a playground. Officials hoped the structures would make the park more comfortable on sunny days. Staff counted 45 entries during a set of weekday observation periods before installation and 70 entries during similar periods afterward. A newspaper described the increase as evidence that shade had made the park more popular.
Paragraph 2
However, the later observations happened during a school holiday, and the weather was warmer. Staff counted entries, not distinct visitors, so one person returning to the park could have been recorded more than once. A voluntary survey received twenty replies; most respondents welcomed the new structures. Yet the survey did not include enough information about residents who had stopped visiting the park.
Paragraph 3
The council decided to gather observations in comparable weather and to examine maintenance costs, accessible routes, and safety. It planned to ask both users and nonusers for feedback. The mayor welcomed the early interest but said the town should not claim that the structures had improved public health without measuring relevant outcomes.

Paragraph 1
A fictional community museum planned an exhibition about a former riverside market. Volunteers interviewed residents who remembered the area before it was rebuilt. One resident believed the market had moved in 1995; another remembered an earlier date. The volunteers initially considered choosing the statement from the oldest speaker, assuming that greater age meant a more reliable memory.
Paragraph 2
An archivist questioned this assumption. She explained that a person’s age could not by itself establish the accuracy of a date. The team consulted municipal documents and found that a new market building had been formally registered in 1994. Yet those records did not specify the final day traders had used the old site. The museum decided to state the registration year clearly while describing the market’s final operating date as uncertain.
Paragraph 3
Before the exhibition opened, one interviewee asked the team to omit a personal family story. The request was accepted. The final display presented several perspectives with labels identifying which facts had documentary support and which statements were personal memories. Visitors could compare them without being told that a single voice represented everyone.

Paragraph 1
A fictional secondary school introduced an online worksheet system in two classes. Before the change, a teacher printed about 1,800 pages for the classes in one month. In the first month after the change, school printers produced 1,200 pages for those classes. The technology committee reported a reduction of 600 printed pages and suggested that the online system might reduce paper use.
Paragraph 2
However, some students printed worksheets at home, and the school did not collect information about this. The committee also had not measured the energy used by the additional devices or the time teachers spent supporting students who had trouble connecting. Several students preferred digital documents because they could search within them, while others said they found annotations easier on paper.
Paragraph 3
Rather than claiming that the system was environmentally better in every respect, the school planned to study total printing across school and home, accessibility, costs, and learning outcomes. It decided to maintain a printed option during the next trial. The committee recognized that a narrower figure, such as school printer output, should not automatically be treated as a complete measure of wider effects.
