NEW TREASURE(ニュートレジャー)Stage4・5の科学系Readやグラフ説明で、mean(算術平均)・median(中央値)・mode(最頻値)・outlier(ほかの値から大きく離れた観測値)の違いが重要になります。
The mean was 44 minutes, while the median was 25 minutes.
Original data: In a fictional classroom exercise, five recorded study-room stays lasted 20, 25, 25, 30 and 120 minutes. These are durations of recorded stays, not five necessarily different students. The 120-minute value has not been shown to be a recording error; it is simply much larger than the other four values. The group wants to report the mean, median, mode and range, while explaining how one large observation influences the mean.
| Observation | Recorded value |
|---|---|
| 1 | 20 minutes |
| 2 | 25 minutes |
| 3 | 25 minutes |
| 4 | 30 minutes |
| 5 | 120 minutes |
問1:How many durations are recorded?
問2:What is the sum of the five durations?
問3:Calculate the arithmetic mean of all five values.
問4:Calculate the median.
問5:Identify the mode.
問6:Calculate the range.
問7:What is the mean of the four shorter values considered separately?
問8:Does the large value prove that a data-entry error occurred?
問9:Which measure is less affected by this large observation in this dataset?
問10:Write a cautious report paragraph.
Original data: A fictional bus service recorded five one-way journey times on five separate trips: 18, 19, 20, 21 and 42 minutes. The 42-minute journey coincided with a traffic incident, but the complete reason for the delay was not formally established. Each number is a trip duration, not a number of passengers. The class is asked to describe the distribution without discarding a legitimate observation merely because it is inconvenient.
| Observation | Recorded value |
|---|---|
| 1 | 18 minutes |
| 2 | 19 minutes |
| 3 | 20 minutes |
| 4 | 21 minutes |
| 5 | 42 minutes |
問11:State the five recorded journey times in order.
問12:Calculate the total of the five durations.
問13:Calculate the mean.
問14:Calculate the median.
問15:Calculate the range.
問16:What is the mean if only the four shorter trips are described separately?
問17:Does 24 minutes describe the duration of every trip?
問18:How should the 42-minute trip be described?
問19:Can we conclude that the traffic incident explains all the extra time?
問20:Write an accurate summary with a limitation.
Original data: In a fictional English class, six volunteers took a short quiz and recorded scores of 10, 68, 70, 72, 78 and 80 out of 100. The lowest value is much smaller than the others, but the class has no evidence that it is a marking or entry error. The students were volunteers, not a random sample of all learners. Their scores should not automatically be interpreted as effects of any particular teaching method.
| Observation | Recorded value |
|---|---|
| 1 | 10 points |
| 2 | 68 points |
| 3 | 70 points |
| 4 | 72 points |
| 5 | 78 points |
| 6 | 80 points |
問21:How many quiz scores were recorded?
問22:Calculate the total score points.
問23:Calculate the mean score.
問24:Calculate the median.
問25:Calculate the range.
問26:What is the mean of the other five scores, examined separately?
問27:What is the median of those five scores?
問28:May the lowest score be removed automatically as an error?
問29:Can the class conclude that a teaching method caused the pattern?
問30:Summarise the distribution and its limits.
Original data: Two fictional groups each recorded five durations of a classroom task. Group A recorded 12, 13, 14, 15 and 46 minutes. Group B recorded 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 minutes. Both sets are assumed accurately recorded for this exercise. These groups were not randomly assigned, and no conclusion about ability or effectiveness can be drawn from task duration alone. Compare the means and medians without deleting observations.
| Group | Recorded times (minutes) |
|---|---|
| A | 12, 13, 14, 15, 46 |
| B | 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 |
問31:Calculate the sum of Group A’s five times.
問32:Calculate Group A’s mean.
問33:Calculate Group A’s median.
問34:Calculate the sum of Group B’s times.
問35:Calculate Group B’s mean.
問36:Calculate Group B’s median.
問37:Which group has the higher mean?
問38:Which group has the higher median?
問39:Explain why the rankings differ.
問40:Write a careful comparison paragraph.

1:Five recorded stays are included.
2:The total is 220 minutes.
3:The mean is 44 minutes.
4:The median is 25 minutes.
5:The mode is 25 minutes.
6:The range is 100 minutes.
7:The mean of those four values is 25 minutes.
8:No. It is unusual, but its accuracy has not been checked.
9:The median is less affected than the arithmetic mean.
10:Five recorded study-room stays lasted 20, 25, 25, 30 and 120 minutes. Their mean was 44 minutes, while the median and mode were both 25 minutes. The range was 100 minutes. The unusually long 120-minute stay strongly raised the mean compared with the other four observations, whose average was 25 minutes. However, the long stay has not been shown to be a mistake and should not be deleted automatically. These figures describe recorded visits, not necessarily five different students.
11:The durations were 18, 19, 20, 21 and 42 minutes.
12:The total is 120 minutes.
13:The arithmetic mean is 24 minutes.
14:The median is 20 minutes.
15:The range is 24 minutes.
16:The four shorter trips had an average of 19.5 minutes.
17:No. It is the mean, and the individual durations varied.
18:It was the longest recorded trip and should be investigated rather than silently removed.
19:No. Its complete contribution was not established.
20:Five fictional bus journeys lasted 18, 19, 20, 21 and 42 minutes. The arithmetic mean was 24 minutes, but the median was 20 minutes, showing how the longest trip affected the average. The range was 24 minutes, and the four shorter trips averaged 19.5 minutes. A traffic incident occurred during the longest journey, although the contribution of that incident was not established. The 42-minute record should be retained and checked rather than removed without a reason. These data concern trip durations and do not indicate passenger numbers.
21:Six quiz scores were recorded.
22:The six scores sum to 378 points.
23:The mean is 63 points.
24:The median is 71 points.
25:The range is 70 points.
26:The other five scores have a mean of 73.6 points.
27:The median of the five higher scores is 72 points.
28:No. There is no evidence that it was recorded incorrectly.
29:No. The exercise provides no comparative teaching-method data.
30:Six volunteer quiz scores were 10, 68, 70, 72, 78 and 80 points. The mean was 63, while the median was 71 and the range was 70. The unusually low score influenced the mean, as the other five scores alone averaged 73.6. However, the score of 10 has not been shown to be an error and should not be excluded without justification. The volunteers do not necessarily represent all students, and these observations do not show that any particular teaching method caused the results.
31:Group A’s total is 100 minutes.
32:Group A’s mean is 20 minutes.
33:Group A’s median is 14 minutes.
34:Group B’s total is 95 minutes.
35:Group B’s mean is 19 minutes.
36:Group B’s median is 19 minutes.
37:Group A has the higher mean, 20 versus 19 minutes.
38:Group B has the higher median, 19 versus 14 minutes.
39:The 46-minute observation raises Group A’s mean, while its median remains the middle value of 14.
40:Group A recorded task times of 12, 13, 14, 15 and 46 minutes, while Group B recorded 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21. Group A had the higher mean, 20 minutes compared with 19, yet Group B had the higher median, 19 compared with 14. The 46-minute observation raised Group A’s average even though four of its five times were shorter than Group B’s shortest time. Both measures are useful descriptions, but task duration alone cannot establish which group had greater ability or received better instruction.
